Note

Dear Parents,

It had been a busy and an amazing month of April as we look back at the wonderful achievements accomplished by the students, especially from the CCA groups who participated in the various inter-school competitions.

The students have dedicated themselves fully in their preparation for these competitions, faithfully going for their regular training sessions. They exemplify the attitude we hope every Nan Chiau student will have – responsibility and perseverance. Not only did they develop sportsmanship and social skills, but they also formed lasting friendships with their fellow teammates. We applaud their tenacity and effort in achieving their goals and are very proud of their achievements. In our eyes, all of them are winners. We would like to thank all parents for their strong support in helping our students manage both school work Since the mid-year examination period is and CCA. Thank you parents! just round the corner, let’s help our students get ready by ensuring that they have adequate sleep and have a healthy breakfast before coming to school so that they can focus well during examinations.

As the first semester draws to an end, on behalf of the staff, I wish you and your family a happy, relaxing and delightful June holiday. Yours sincerely, Mdm Mae Quah Mdm Mae Quah Principal 1 MAY 2018 Responsibility

Celebrating ASEAN COMMUNITY Our school commemorated International Friendship Day (IFD) from 2 to 6 April. This year, the theme for International Friendship Day (IFD) is Celebrating ASEAN COMMUNITY.

The celebration aims to inspire our students to play an active role in fostering interpersonal skills and to reinforce a sense of togetherness and strengthen our ASEAN identity. Many of our staff and students came to school adorned in costumes of the different ASEAN countries to demonstrate their appreciation of cultural diversity and willingness to embrace others from diverse backgrounds.

A series of interesting and meaningful buddy activities were planned for our students to appreciate the different cultures and traditions of their international peers from different countries.

Earth Day 2018 4 On 19 April Thursday, the school celebrated Earth Day. It is an annual event celebrated worldwide on 22 April.

Our school advocates the reduction in the use of plastic to prevent further pollution of the environment. Our canteen vendors no longer offer straws to students buying drinks from them.

Students learnt how to protect the environment by conserving water, recycling different types of materials, growing plants or trees and to be a volunteer for clean-ups. Together, we can make a difference to the environment by practising the 5Rs – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Refuse and Repurpose. Photo 3 MAY 2018 Responsibility

Five-School Combined As a member of the SHHK family, our school always look forward to participating in the friendly 5-School Combined Sports Meet. This year, the much awaited sports meet was held on 13 April at Bishan Stadium. Our Primary 3 and 4 students had the opportunity to support the athletes representing our school in the various events.

Our guest-of-honour, Mr Pok Cheng Chong (Vice-Chairman of the Education Committee, SHHK Affiliated Schools Management, Committee), graced the event by giving a speech to kick start the Sports Day. Similar to the Olympics tradition, we got to witness the symbolic Torch Relay, Oath-taking by the athletes and the Contingents March Past.

Once the races began, the air was filled with cheering and tons of encouragement from our school leaders, teachers and students for our young athletes. Spectators on the side of the long jump pit hushed as their school mates darted past them and jumped a few feet into the sand.

In shot put, the determined faces of the throwers were visible as they mustered all their might to throw a weighted ball as far as they could.

One by one, the events took place in an orderly manner. The winners stood proudly on the Victory Stand while the audience cheered. Our students showed good sportsmanship and realised the value of hard work and determination. 5 MAY 2018 Responsibility
