Hornbills of Borneo
The following two species can be easily confused. [email protected] HORNBILLS OF BORNEO Wrinkled hornbill (Aceros corrugatus): A large, mainly black hornbill whose tail is mostly white with some black at the base. Males have a yellow bill and more prominent reddish casque while females have an all yellow bill and casque. SABAH MALAYSIA The presence of hornbills in the Kinabatangan area is an indication that the surrounding habitat is healthy. Hornbills need forests for nesting and food. Forests need hornbills for dispersal of seeds. And the local people need the forests for wood Wreathed hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus): A large, primarily black hornbill products, clean water and clean air. They are all connected: whose tail is all white with no black at the base. Both sexes have a pale bill with a small casque and a dark streak/mark on the throat pouch. people, hornbills and forests! Eight different hornbill species occur in Borneo and all are found in Kinabatangan. All are protected from hunting and/or disturbance. M. HILLIARD &B.L.BURTT Nineteen miscellaneous species of Bornean Cyrtandra are dealt with. Cyrtandra atrichoides, C. congestiflora, C. crockerella, C. dulitiana, C. kanae, C. libauensis, C. plicata, C. vaginata and C. disparoides subsp. inconspicua are newly described. Descriptions and discussion are provided for C. erythrotricha and C. poulsenii, originally published with diagnoses only. Cyrtandra axillaris, C. longicarpa and C. microcarpa are also described, while C. borneensis, C. dajakorum, C. glomeruliflora, C. latens and C. prolata are reduced to synonymy. Keywords. Borneo, Cyrtandra, Gesneriaceae, new species. I NTRODUCTION A good many species of Cyrtandra in Borneo still remain undescribed; some available specimens are known to us only in the sterile state or are otherwise inadequate to typify a name. In this paper eight species and one subspecies are newly described. Burtt (1996) published new species with diagnoses only: C. erythrotricha B.L.Burtt and C. poulsenii B.L.Burtt are now fully described while C. glomeruliflora B.L.Burtt is reduced to synonymy under C. poulsenii. Full descriptions of C. axillaris C.B.Clarke and C. microcarpa C.B.Clarke are also given for the first time with the reduction of C. latens C.B.Clarke and C. dajakorum Kraenzl. -

Using data on diet, body size and geographical ranges we examine factors that are thought to influence body size. -

Simultaneously, however, research has also shown that the larger political context in which the EIA is embedded is crucial in determining its influence on decision-making. Moreover, particularly in the case of mega-projects, vested economic interests, rent-seeking, and politics may provide them with a momentum in which the EIA risks becoming a mere formality. To substantiate this point, the article examines the EIA of what is reportedly Asia’s largest dam outside China: the Bakun Hydro-electric Project (BHP) in Malaysia. The study is based on mixed methods, particularly, qualitative research (semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and archival study) coupled to a survey conducted in 10 resource-poor, indigenous communities in the resettlement area. It is found that close to 90% of the respondents are dissatisfied with their participation in the EIA, while another 80% stated that the authorities had conducted the EIA without complying to the procedures. -
