MULTIVARIABLE SLIDING MODE CONTROL DESIGN FOR AIRCRAFT ENGINES SIRIRAT SANGWIAN ABSTRACT Many control theories are used in controlling aircraft engines. However, the multi- variable sliding mode control is not yet established in this application even though it has a lot of potential in dealing with complex and nonlinear systems such as aircraft engines. Therefore, a guideline in developing multivariable sliding mode control law for an aircraft engine is presented in this thesis. The problem of chattering in the sliding mode control is suppressed by the use of the boundary layer method. The con- trol logic is tested by implementing NASA's Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation 40k (C-MAPSS40k). Simulation results are analyzed and com- pared to the results obtained from the baseline controller. The robust property of multivariable sliding mode control is also examined by altering the flight condition of the engine. therefore multivariable sliding mode control is an excellent candidate to utilize as a control law for these systems. This thesis establishes practical procedures for designing multivariable sliding mode control and applies them to a turbofan engine, which is widely used in commercial aircrafts due to its efficiency and quieter opera- tion. In addition, by utilizing the multivariable sliding mode control in creating the control law for an aircraft engine, the horizon of the control theory for aircraft en- gines is expanded.

This thesis presents several methods to apply sliding mode control to linear discrete- time weakly-coupled systems and different approaches to decouple the sub-systems. The application of Utkin and Young's sliding mode control method on discrete-time weakly-coupled systems is studied in detail which is then compared with other control algorithms while emphasising the importance of the decoupling technique in each case. It also presents the possibility of integrating two or more control strategies for a sin- gle system; one for each sub-system, depending upon the respective requirements and constraints.

In the recent work [7] a class of uncertain nonlinear non affine control systems has been dealt with by this control strategy applied to the first time derivative of the actual control vector. In principle this “trick” (negligible dynamics of actuators and sensors) counteracts the chattering phenomenon, which is often considered the main drawback of the sliding mode control methodology, in practice it allows to reduce the phenomenon to an acceptable, high frequency, small amplitude perturbation of the ideal control law.

In addition to this, it has an impact on the overall engine performance. Consequently, it is important to model the complex flow features around the exhaust system accurately in order to capture the flow characteristics. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) alongside with low-order models can play a central role in the design and performance assessment of the propulsion system. This paper aims to explore the suitability of a numerical model, boundary conditions, and the employed mesh topology in computing a propelling ISABE 2019 2 ISABE 2019 nozzle performance. The current work is a first step towards building a module to assess a wide range of nozzle configurations at the preliminary design stages. A single-stream and plug-nozzle propelling nozzle were simulated for this purpose. For the single-stream nozzle, the simulations were run at various flight conditions and different geometrical features. For both nozzle configurations, a comparison between the effectiveness of six turbulence models to capture the nozzle flow features is presented. The validated module is then used to assess the impact of the bypass flow and the plug half-angle on the performance of the core nozzle for a dual-stream nozzle configuration.

The design settled uponconsists of a radial compressor, an annular combustion chamber and an axial turbine.Since the compressor would have been the most difficult part to machine, the decision was made early on to use the compressor from a turbocharger out of an automotiveengine. Turbocharger consists of two chambers that are connected by center housing and the two chambers contain a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel connected by a shaft which passes through the center housing.

In both cases, the systems experience unknown disturbances which are considered bounded. Sliding surfaces are defined by equations combining the state of the system and the expected trajectory. The control laws are drawn to force the system trajectory from an initial condition to the defined sliding surface in finite time. After reaching the sliding surface, the system trajectory remains on it. The effectiveness of the approaches proposed is verified by a few computer simulation examples. The strategy used is a modified field oriented control to control the IM drive system. The SMC is used to calculate the frequency required for generating three phase voltage of Space vVector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) invertor. When the SMC is used with current controller, the quadratic component of stator current is estimated by the controller. Instead of using current controller, this paper proposed estimating the frequency of stator voltage whereas the slip speed is representing a function of the quadratic current. The simulation results of using the SMC showed that a good dynamic response can be obtained under load disturbances as compared with the classical PI controller; the complete mathematical model of the system is described and simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Furthermore, due to its low conduction losses, the space vector approach was designated as a switching law to control the DMC.
