Assistant Sport Competition Manager

1. JOB PURPOSE

In July 2022, will host the XXII , the largest multi- sport event to be held in in 10 years. Approximately 6,500 athletes and team officials from 72 nations and territories across the Commonwealth will come together in a 12-day celebration of sport and culture. Events will take place across Birmingham and the West Midlands, entertaining more than one million ticketed spectators and reaching a global broadcast audience of more than one billion.

Each of the signatories to the Host City Contract (HCC); the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), UK Government, and Commonwealth Games England (CGE) together with the Organising Committee have key roles role in the planning and delivery of the , both individually and collectively to ensure that the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the host community legacies derived from hosting the Games are a huge success.

The parties to the HCC have established Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Ltd as the Organising Committee. The scope of the Organising Committee’s role is broad and complex and ranges from ensuring the physical readiness of the venues and temporary facilities, to the planning, coordination and delivery of more than 40 operational functions such as transport, security and catering to meet the needs of the Games, including the athletes, technical officials, spectators, press, broadcasters and other Games Family and stakeholders.

The Sport Competition team is responsible for the competition delivery of 19 sports at Birmingham 2022. Working closely with each Sport’s International Federations and National Governing Bodies, the Sport Competition team coordinate and communicate the sport’s needs to other departments within the Organising Committee such as transport, technology, broadcast, catering, cleaning and waste. Our aim is to create the best possible environment for athletes to perform at their full potential when competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022.

Keeping athletes and technical officials at the forefront of their work, the Assistant Sport Competition Manager will assist the Sport Competition Manager in the planning and delivery of their sport in accordance with the sport’s rules and regulations set by the International Federation.

An Assistant Sport Competition Manager will be recruited for each sport at Birmingham 2022. Our 19 Sports at Birmingham 2022 are:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

During the initial term of the Assistant Sport Competition Manager role, most working days are office based. Examples of areas of work and key responsibilities are: • Assisting the Sport Competition Manager to plan operations for their designated sport which includes; o Gathering information to support the sport’s requirements o Reading and researching information from previous Commonwealth Games and similar multi-sport events o Creating documents and keeping them up to date with the most current information, Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint are used frequently

o Supporting the Sport Competition Manager in coordinating and collating information for project plans, key tasks, risks and issues that are relevant to the sport and athlete experience at Birmingham 2022 o Attending meetings to represent the sport o Communicating with other departments o Building effective working relationships with Sport International Federations, National Governing Bodies and other key partners o Planning and managing logistical arrangements for International Federation site visits o Attending venue site visits • Participating in the training programme for Assistant Sport Competition Managers • Utilising any relevant opportunities to gain further event experience • Supporting the Sport Competition Manager to recruit, organise and train the sport volunteers who will be required at games time

At Games Time in July 2022 and early August 2022, the Assistant Sport Competition Manager will assist the Sport Competition Manager in the delivery of Competition and Training at their associated venues. Specific responsibilities will vary depending on each sport and the team recruited. As an example, this could be: • Management of an assigned sport area at the competition and/or training venue • Briefing sport volunteers at the start / end of shifts to ensure they understand their role • Working with other departments to ensure the sport requirements agreed in the planning phase are delivered

For this role, a flexible approach is required towards working evenings and weekends, particularly in the lead up to and during Games Time in July 2022 and early August 2022.

Responsibilities of the role will evolve during the lifespan of the Organising Committee and it is likely that the role profile will evolve with the changing needs of the organisation. 3. PERSON SPECIFICATION a) Skills and experience required
