THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

Sports Wednesday, June 5, 2019 15 News in brief Roy, Archer & Ahmed fined for breaching ICC code LONDON: Jason Roy and Jofra Archer have each been fined 15 percent of their match fees for incidents during England’s World Cup defeat by Pakistan at Trent Bridge. The International Cricket Council found opener Roy had breached level one of its code of conduct, using an audible obscenity after a misfield during Pakistan’s innings. Fast bowler Archer was found guilty of dissent towards an umpire’s decision following a wide delivery. Both players have also had one demerit point added to their records. Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was fined 20 percent of his fee, and his teammates 10 percent, for a minor over-rate offence. Pakistan won Monday’s match by 14 runs after setting England a target of 349. It was an occasionally fractious encounter, with the umpires warning England skipper Eoin Morgan about his side throwing the ball in on the bounce and later issuing the same reminder to Sarfaraz. The tactic is often used to scuff up the ball and promote reverse swing. England batsman Jos Buttler appeared to take a look at the ball on his walk back to the pavilion after his knock of 103 came to an end. English crowds “stupid” to boo Warner, says manager MELBOURNE: English crowds are “stupid” to jeer David Warner at the Cricket World Cup as it will only fire him up, the Australian batsman’s manager James Erskine has said. With paceman Peter Siddle hampered by an ankle injury, Marsh stepped up to take 4-61 to help close out victory in the second test against West Indies on Tuesday on a Melbourne Cricket Ground pitch offer- ing little for bowlers. High-fives from team mates were no doubt plentiful in the dressing room, with Marsh having played a big part in preventing them all from having to come back on a fifth day to take care of the West Indies tail. His fast bowling colleagues and selectors will also have been impressed with the 24-year-old’s pace. The speed gun clocked some of his deliveries at over 140 kph. Australia coach Darren Lehmann remarked that Marsh could shape as a de facto third seamer for the third and final test at the Sydney Cricket Ground if selectors picked two spinners. “It’s quite flattering NELSON: Tillakaratne Dilshan (R) of Sri Lanka plays a shot in front of New Zealand wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi during the to hear that, but the biggest thing for me is just play- 3rd One Day International cricket match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Saxton Oval in Nelson yesterday. — AFP ing my role,” Marsh told reporters in Melbourne. “Over the last 18 months I’ve worked really hard with (bowling coach) Craig McDermott to try and get Fiery net spell sees S Lanka a few extra K’s (kph) on my bowling and certainly over the last few months I’ve felt like I’m just getting turn tables on New Zealand a bit faster and faster in every game that I play.
