Intercollegiate Football, Print Material, University Archives, North Dakota State University, Fargo. HISTORY The first intercollegiate football games played in North Dakota occurred in November of 1894. North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC) beat the University of North Dakota (UND) on Saturday, November 3, 1894 by a score of 24 to 6 in Grand Forks. On Monday, November 12, 1894, UND came down to Fargo to play NDAC and lost again 20 to 4. Accusations flew that NDAC was using faculty and the rivalry seemed to be fueled by both the Grand Forks Herald and the Fargo Forum. The teams had played 107 times through 2003, when the rivalry was suspended due to North Dakota State University’s move to NCAA Division I-AA. Intercollegiate Football – Print Materials - Page 2 of 16 As a Division II team, since 1965, the North Dakota State University Football Team captured 8 national championships: 1965 –11-0 season with a win over Grambling College in the Pecan Bowl 1968 –10-0 season with a win over Arkansas State in the Pecan Bowl 1969 –10-0 season with a win of the University of Montana in the Camellia Bowl 1983 –12-1-0 season with a win over Central State of Ohio in the Palm Bowl 1985 –11-2-1 season with a win over the University of North Alabama in the Palm Bowl 1986 -13-0 season with another win over the University of South Dakota in the Palm Bowl 1988 –14-0 season with a win over Portland State in the NCAA finals 1990 –14-0 season with a win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania SCOPE AND CONTENTS The print material series consist primarily of programs and fact books/media guides and some newspaper clipping. There are two broad series: general information and programs. General information includes early programs, schedules, clipping, and fact book/media guides (1903-present). This series is very sparse through the 1950s. The Programs series (1924-present) is also sparse until the late 1960s.
