Pastor’sLetter Dear Parishioners:

As you may know, most parishes have a Pastoral Council. The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to advise the Pastor on issues affecting the parish. The Pastoral Council strives to keep a pulse on the parish from issues ranging from the administrative/financial to the pastoral/spiritual.

The Pastoral Council thought it would be a good idea to give parishioners an opportunity to voice any concerns, suggestions, etc. To that end, the members of the Pastoral Council will be available after all the Masses next weekend, February 7 & 8 in the Parish Center. Please stop by and give any comments, suggestions, etc. As my first pastor used to say, “No one of us is as smart as all of us.”

The members of the Pastoral Council are listed on Page 2 of the bulletin. They are: Eileen Rega, Mary Borgs, Lisa Cantalino, Sonia DaSilva, Nilo DeLeon, Jerry Esposito, Trish Frodell, Pam Gagliano, Deborah Lamb, Rosalie Mangels, John Muldoon, Dottie Perdue, Vita Scorcia and Deacon Jack Meehan.

As you may know, Francis has declared 2015 to be the “Year of .” wrote that the faithful ought to “get to know religious more personally, pray for them and pray with them, support their ministries and participate in them.” We have been very blessed to have a strong presence of religious Brothers and Sisters in our Diocese and we are doubly blessed because we have such a strong presence of religious Sisters in our own parish. The Sisters of St. Joseph have been a part of our parish family for over 50 years, both in the school and in our Religious Education department.

We are very fortunate to have a full convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph whose motherhouse is in Brentwood. While just about everyone knows Sr. Diane and Sr. Nancy, we also have an addition- al five Sisters of St. Joseph living in Our Lady of Lourdes convent: Sr. Kathleen Carberry (who has been the principal of OLL School), Sr. Jane, Sr. Isabelle, Sr. Edith and Sr. Marie. These Sisters are engaged in various ministries throughout the Diocese.

In the Diocese of Rockville Centre, James McVeigh, OSF and Sister Patricia Moran, CIJ are the co-vicars for religious. They represent the religious congregations to Bishop Murphy and Bishop Murphy to the religious congregations. The religious Sisters and Brothers really built the Church on Long Island: the hospitals, the Catholic school system, child care agencies, etc.

This special year is a time to thank God for all those who have consecrated their lives as religious Sisters, Brothers and Priests. Secondly, I urge men and women to prayerfully consider answering God’s call to religious life. I am convinced that God is still calling people to the religious life; we need to listen better to that call.

Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.

In Christ,

Fr. Brian

Respect Life Ministry Human Life and Dignity For the Church, there is no distinction between defending human life and promoting the dignity of the human person.

Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate ... that "The Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics and social ethics, fully aware that 'a society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, jus- tice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the con- trary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized.'" (no. 15).

As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of As a gift from God, human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world every human life is of greater respect for human life and greater commitment to sacred from justice and peace. conception to natural death. The bishops pledged to affirm the intrinsic value of human life and the dignity of every human being in a way that transforms the culture by implementing “The Life and Dignity of the Human Person” priority plan for 2010-2012.

To achieve this goal, the priority plan includes ongoing education, prayer, policy, and advoca- cy efforts to mobilize the Catholic community on issues of life, justice, and peace. In this way, the Catholic community celebrates the gift of human life and witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Murphy’s Bishop Letter

February 1, 2015 World Day for Consecrated Life

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life in the Universal Church. We give thanks and honor the women and men in consecrated life who have served and are serving here in our great Diocese of Rockville Centre.

The life of this local Church has been blessed through the mission and ministry of these dedicated women and men who are responding to God’s call to each of them to follow Jesus as vowed religious. As religious, their commitment to a life of prayer, lived in community and expressed through their ministry in the Church, witnesses to their response to God’s love for them. Their vowed com- mitment to God and service to the Church is a gift for all of us.

As we move through this Year of Consecrated Life I invite each of you to take whatever opportunities are presented to say “thanks” to the religious who are here in our Diocese, to remember them in your prayers and to pray that other generous young people respond to God’s call to join them as religious sisters, brothers and priests.

I join my prayers with yours in thanksgiving for their lives of prayer and service and in petition that God will bless each of the religious who are part of our Dio- cese with gifts of grace, hope and peace as they witness to God’s great love. I ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to continue to inspire each of them as they live a life of “Yes” to God’s call.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Bishop of Rockville Centre

Growing with the Gospel the with Growing Sharing the Gospel Grass stains. Tomato sauce. Brightly colored fruit drinks. When these nasty stains stick to your clothes, it is tough to get them out. Regular soap won't work. You need something stronger. Jesus is really strong, too. In today's Gospel, a nasty evil spirit screamed when it saw Jesus. Jesus was so powerful, he cleaned that evil spirit right out.

Mission for the Week Make a new label for your family's stain pre-treatment bottle. Trace around the bottle, write Mark 1:21-28 in big letters, and decorate your label with a picture of Jesus. Tape your new label to the bottle so you and your parents remember how strong Jesus is.

Prayer

God, you are much stronger than evil. Nothing is too hard for you to clean.

Something to Draw

Draw a picture of Jesus on a super- powerful stain- fighting laundry soap.
