Dr. Sandra Singer, Professor of German and Chair of the Division of Modern Languages, is a woman of many talents. In addition to teaching courses in German and Latin, Sandra has also developed a variety of courses in ancient and modern European history for the Division of Human Studies and has taught Women and Gender in Society, the core course in Women’s and Gender Studies, many times. Generous and caring, Sandra’s dedication to teaching and to serving the university is unparalleled.

ANDREW DEUTSCH

Andrew Deutsch joined the Alfred University faculty in 1994. He has been a dedicated and engaged member of the School of Art and Design through his extraordinary teaching, research, leadership, and service. Andrew engages students and colleagues through authentic, refreshing, surprising, engaging, and delightful thinking with a commitment to the poetics of materials, listening, looking, and thinking. His passion and commitment to media arts studio research, practice, and evolving pedagogies have had a signifcant impact at Alfred as well as an international impact to his feld where he participates in remarkable investigations of the performative world of analog and digital image/sound media. His practice is grounded in an historical awareness of art and media art and engages us to think about experimental notation systems, algorithmic and logarithmic synthesis, ambient music, and atmospherics. But most of all, Andrew is a thoughtful colleague with the ability to foster transformation through new and innovative thinking, leading us through dedication, enthusiasm for achievement, unfettered creativity, and contentment with a job remarkably accomplished.

BETH ANN DOBIE

Beth Ann Dobie began at Alfred by launching, then nurturing the Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts program. In her successive work—numerous courses and committees, twice directing the University’s self-study for Middle States Commission, chair of Human Studies, Dean of CLAS and now Provost and VP for Academic Affairs – her standards of excellence, fne teaching, compassion and guidance for students, and leadership in achieving collaboration across disciplines have established her as a stunning treasure for Alfred University.

34 THE ABIGAIL ALLEN AWARD

Abigail Allen, a founding mother of Alfred University, dedicated her life’s work to advancing the cause of coeducation and encouraging women to pursue higher education. In so doing, she contributed immeasurably to improving the quality of women’s lives on our campus and in the wider community. The Abigail Allen Award is presented each year to a faculty/ staff member who has contributed to our campus and our community by improving the quality of women’s lives today and whose exceptional efforts deserve recognition in this vein.

D. CHASE ANGIER

D. Chase Angier, Professor of Dance and Chair of the Performing Arts Division, has been teaching at Alfred University since 2002. She teaches a wide variety of courses from modern and contemporary dance to site-specifc performance and movement for actors. Nominated several times for the Alfred University Outstanding Teaching Award, Chase received an Alfe Award for Outstanding Faculty Contribution to Student Life in 2007 and an ARGUS Faculty Research Mentor Award in 2014.

In addition to teaching, Chase is an active artist, curator and arts advocate. Her performance works, often created in collaboration with other dynamic artists in the visual and performing arts, have been exhibited in theaters, galleries and visually inspiring sites around the world. Artistic Director for the Marlin Miller Dance Residency Program since 2002, Chase has worked collaboratively with her colleagues to develop a vibrant dance program at Alfred University and curated innumerable residencies, thus exposing the Alfred community to a wide range of artists of international renown. As Chair of the Performing Arts Division, Chase has faced the exciting challenge of developing and stabilizing the division as it grows into its new independent status. Her colleagues speak highly of her service to Performing Arts and in particular of her support of the women faculty: “[Chase] has been working tirelessly to form a space where every woman and person is valued and advocated for. She has worked to build connection and relationship between Performing Arts and the wider University and community. She has done a (S)hero’s job and should be recognized for it.”

Moreover, the work that Chase does in the dance program helps to build our women students’ self-esteem. Chase has succeeded in creating a safe space for our diverse student body, an empowering space for students from the full spectrum of gender, race, and ability. Her interest in the intersections of disability, gender, and race led her to nominate the speaker for this year’s Riley Lecture, Alice Sheppard, Artistic Director of Kinetic Light, a leading disability arts ensemble. There is no doubt that Chase embodies the spirit of the Abigail Allen Award. As one of her colleagues wrote: “The vitality and commitment D. Chase Angier brings to enriching the lives of women in the Alfred community permeates all that she touches – through dance, her enduring belief in the arts to make our lives better and her consistent pursuit of learning, Chase elevates what is possible for the women around her, and what those women perceive as possible for themselves.”

Nestled away ’mid the Empire State hills, ’Neath the watch-care of sentinel pines, Where the murmuring song of the brook hums along, And a favoring sun ever shines; In a valley so fair where the forest trees share Dominion o’er hillside and glen, Stands the pioneer college of Alfred, we hail thee again.

CHORUS Hail to thee Alfred, thou guide of our youth, Sweet, benign mother, all hail! Sing out thy anthems of duty and truth; May thy clear ringing music ne’er fail.
