Dan Spencer Era MLB Draft/Free Agent Picks (2008-2012) Dan Spencer came to the Texas Tech program in 2008, and in five years Spencer and the Texas Tech coaches have helped produce 19 players who have been drafted/signed free agent by Major League Baseball organizations. Overall, the Red Raiders have had 12 pitchers (8 RHP, 4 LHP), two outfielders, one catcher and four infielder drafted during the last four years. Spencer has coached five players who have been top-10 round draft picks, including three in 2008 and 2010 second-round selection (76th overall) Chad Bettis and fourth-round pick Bobby Doran (123rd overall). In addition, Spencer coached 45 players at Oregon State (1997-2007) that were drafted, including 21 top-10 round picks, 10 top-five round selections and three first-round picks. In Spencer’s final season with the Beavers in 2007, Oregon State had two first-round picks and a total of six top-10 selections. Nine of Spencer’s players at Oregon State have made their big league debuts and one of Spencer’s pitchers at Texas Tech (Zach Stewart) has made it to the big leagues. He felt close, but not quite there, and settled for a jam- shot single here, a move-the-runner fly ball there. On Tuesday night, he joined what looks like a Rockies breakout. Blackmon whacked a first-inning home run -- his first in 42 at-bats -- to straightaway center field and added two more hits in his team's fifth victory in six games, an 8-1 win over the Giants at Coors Field. "It's really good to continue to try and win games, play team baseball, even if you're not feeling real awesome at the plate or on the mound," said Blackmon, who has 15 homers -- nine of which occurred during a hot April -- and a .275 batting average. The victory -- which also included Antonio Senzatela's seven scoreless, three-hit innings in his first start of the season and Nolan Arenado's National League-leading 22nd homer -- put the Rockies back at .500 (43-43). Could it also have signaled Blackmon's return to major contributor status? Theirs is one of the best in baseball, Brandon Crawford. Their second baseman was drafted as a shortstop and converted in the minors, Joe Panik. They drafted Matt Duffy as a shortstop and taught him to play third base as a big-leaguer. Last summer, they traded for Eduardo Nuñez, who had played mostly shortstop during his career but played third after Duffy was traded to Tampa Bay. Heck, even Buster Posey played shortstop in college. No wonder the Giants’ top hitting prospect is a shortstop. Not that Christian Arroyo is targeted to play the position in the big leagues, not with Mr. Crawford in the house. Arroyo, who’s 21 going on 30, is the team’s third baseman of the future, and we’re not talking the distant future. It’s not unrealistic to imagine Arroyo playing third on Opening Day in 2018, so long as he continues to excel on the fast track. 1 “For me, they stressed the value of versatility,” Arroyo said at his Scottsdale Stadium locker. “Staying versatile is going to be huge.” Arroyo was the Giants’ top draft pick in 2013 — he was salutatorian at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. — and he signed after turning down a scholarship from Florida, where he would have studied architectural engineering.
