Ealing Teaching School Alliance (ETSA) is an exciting and innovative collaboration striving to provide teaching excellence in the . The Alliance comprises of 13 secondary schools and is in partnership with Hillingdon SCITT, St Mary’s and Goldsmiths. ETSA has a fantastic reputation for its well-established training programmes and its excellent track-record of induction. ETSA’s commitment to ensuring that all trainees, regardless of subject or route, are able to benefit from the experience and expertise of the very best practitioners makes it an excellent place to train and procure employment once qualified. For the past five years, the vast majority of ETSA trainees have secured their first qualified teacher role within the Alliance upon completion of their training year.

You will learn your craft in a safe environment which allows you to experiment with teaching styles, strategies and ideas. Your training will be delivered by expert teachers within the school. You will participate in weekly professional development sessions and you will also attend Alliance-wide “Golden Day” training events along with fellow ETSA trainees. Your school-led training will be complemented by attendance at the Hillingdon SCITT, St Mary’s or Goldsmiths. You will be assigned an experienced mentor from within your subject area at your main placement school who will support you in your development over the course of what will be a challenging and rewarding year. All mentors are excellent teachers who are well-trained in mentoring, coaching, lesson observations and feedback skills. You will also work closely with a member of the Senior Leadership team who will oversee a great deal of your training and will provide an invaluable perspective on your role as a teacher and the wider issues of education leadership. As well as your main training placement, you will complete a six-week placement in a contrasting context within ETSA; this will afford you the opportunity to experience working with different students, within different structures and with a wider range of colleagues.

School Direct is a school-led teacher training option that offers practical, hands-on training and education. This course offers a brilliant option if you want to train and learn ‘on the job’, and you shouldn’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end. You’ll be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive support from experienced teachers and mentors. That means you won’t be teaching classes unsupported until the school thinks you’re ready. School-led courses have very high rates of employment and trainee satisfaction.

ETSA Salaried School Direct trainees will be paid on the Unqualified Teacher Pay Scale (Band A, Inner London) area. All ETSA schools offering Salaried places in Maths, Physics and Computing will pay trainees at least £25,000 as a result of additional funding being offered by the government. Salaries for other subjects will vary depending on the subject and salary.

Applying for ETSA’s School Direct vacancies on UCAS

When you know which subject, school and route you want to apply for, you can begin your application. Before you can apply, you must register with UCAS to create an account. When you have registered, click “apply for 2019 training programmes”. To apply for a position at ETSA, click on “add a choice” under the “Choices” tab as follows:

In the “training provider code” section, search for “Ealing Teaching School Alliance” and the course training provider code 1KV will be automatically entered. You can then choose your training programme by providing the UCAS course code of the vacancy you wish to apply for. Please see the list of vacancies in this booklet for individual course codes. When choosing a training location/campus, the school’s name will appear for you to select. Please note that for Twyford places, the location is listed as “main site”. Please note that once you have completed and submitted your application, we will not receive your application until your referees have provided your reference. Frequently Asked Questions How long does the training programme last? The next cohort of ETSA School Direct trainees will begin their training in September 2019 and finish in summer 2020. I haven’t got a degree. Can I still apply? No, all candidates must hold a UK degree (or equivalent). Please note if you are currently studying towards an undergraduate degree, you must have completed the course prior to commence a School Direct training programme. I live outside of the UK. Can I still apply? All applicants must have the right to work in the UK to be eligible for School Direct at ETSA. Some schools may be willing to sponsor applicants who are looking at applying for the salaried route in Physics, Maths or Computer Science. Do I need to have experience of working in a UK school? Yes, you need up to 10 days experience in a UK school to be considered for the School Direct Programme. School experience is essential if you’re interested in becoming a teacher. Before you apply for your training, you'll need to gain as much experience in the classroom as possible in order to strengthen your application and prepare you for potential interviews. It is possible to apply without this experience but you will need to arrange school experience before any offer can be made. What qualification will I receive at the end of the training programme? Trainees on the non-salaried route will gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) upon successful completion of the training year. Trainees on the salaried route will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Can I apply by submitting a CV and covering letter directly to the School? No, all applications must be submitted via UCAS. If we would like to invite you to an interview, it is likely that it will take place within these 25 working days. Will I secure a teacher position with you after my training? We aim for 100% of our School Direct trainees to secure permanent employment with us upon successful completion of the training year. At ETSA, we see the School Direct training programme as the beginning of your teaching career with us, not just a one year training programme.
