Background

Schools background data was sourced from the 2016/17 BGE Tool Similar Schools List which has school values based on Rurality, SIMD Quintiles, FME, Denomination, Gender, EAL, Taught in Gaelic and Ethnicity. The main variable used was Rurality initially for 3 overall groupings, Rural, Urban and Small Towns to then further interrogate by FSM and SIMD.

This resulted in 22 groups as shown below.

The numbers in the variables represent the following average percentages of that school population 1 = 0-<10% 2 = 10-<20% 3 = 20-<30% 4 = 30-<40% 5 = 40-<50% 6 = 50-<60% 7 = 60-<70% 8 = 70-<80% 9 = 80-<90% 10 = 90-<100% For example-

Family R1 – (Rural 9-10) means that the schools in this family have more than 80% of pupils classed as living in a rural area.

(FSM 2-6) means that the schools in this family have between 10% and 60% of pupils registered for free school meals.

(SIMD Q 1/3 9-12) means that the schools in this family whose pupils live in SIMD Quintiles 1,2 and 3 equate to more than 80% and when the 3 deciles are added together it may show a higher value than 10 due to the percentage bands.

Partnered Schools were considered, and each partnership has been counted once with the largest school in the partnership used for matching as most partnered schools are too small to show values. The partnerships have been colour coded to identify easily each as below.
