Hilliard The community of Harlem is one which is rich in history and culture. Throughout its development it has seen everything from poverty to urban growth. In spite of this the people of this community banded together to establish a strong community that became the model for other black urban areas. As a result of this millions have migrated to this community since the 1880’s, bringing with them heritages and traditions of their own. One of these traditions was that of music, and it was through music that many flocked to Harlem, especially in the 1920’s through 1950’s to seek their fortune in the big apple. Somewhere around the year 1918 this melting pot of southern blacks deeply rooted in the traditions of spirituals and blues mixed with the more educated northern blacks to create an atmosphere of artistic and intellectual growth never before seen or heard in America. Here was the birth of the Harlem Renaissance. The purpose of this unit will be to; a. Define the community of Harlem. b. Explain the growth of music in this area. c. Identify important people who spearheaded this movement. d. Identify places where music grew in Harlem. e. Establish a visual as well as an aural account of the musical history of this era. f. Anthologize the music of this era up to and including today’s urban music. -

James Hepokoski Spring 2009 Music 458: Ives, Blues, Porter Visions of America: Competing concepts of musical style and purpose in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. We examine some stylistic and cultural bases of both “art” and “popular” music and their often uneasy interrelationships. This is neither a survey course nor one concerned with mastering a body of facts. Nor is it preoccupied with coming to aesthetic value judgments. Instead, it is a course in applying critical thinking and analysis to some familiar musical styles basic to the American experience: asking hard questions of differing early- and mid-twentieth-century repertories. Areas to be examined include: 1) Ives (selected songs, Concord Sonata, Second Symphony); 2) early blues (Bessie Smith, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, and others), including samples of African-American recorded precedents and related genres; 3) Broadway and popular song—including a brief look at Jerome Kern (selected numbers from Show Boat) followed by a closer study of Cole Porter (Anything Goes). Some main questions to be faced are: What aesthetic/contextual/analytical tools do we need to think more deeply about differing pieces of music that spring from or respond to markedly differing/diverse American subcultures? What are our presuppositions in listening to any of these musics, and to what extent might we profit by examining these presuppositions critically? The course will also make use of resources in Yale’s music collection—most notably the Charles Ives Papers and The Cole Porter Collection. We shall also be concerned with original recordings from the 1920s and 1930s. -
The Influence of Louis Armstrong on the Harlem Renaissance 1923-1930
ABSTRACT HUMANITIES DECUIR, MICHAEL B.A. SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AT NEW ORLEANS, 1987 M.A. THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY, 1989 THE INFLUENCE OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG ON THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE 1923–1930 Committee Chair: Timothy Askew, Ph.D. Dissertation dated August 2018 This research explores Louis Armstrong’s artistic choices and their impact directly and indirectly on the African-American literary, visual and performing arts between 1923 and 1930 during the period known as the Harlem Renaissance. This research uses analyses of musical transcriptions and examples of the period’s literary and visual arts to verify the significance of Armstrong’s influence(s). This research also analyzes the early nineteenth century West-African musical practices evident in Congo Square that were present in the traditional jazz and cultural behaviors that Armstrong heard and experienced growing up in New Orleans. Additionally, through a discourse analysis approach, this research examines the impact of Armstrong’s art on the philosophical debate regarding the purpose of the period’s art. Specifically, W.E.B. How the Harlem Renaissance Started The main factors contributing to the development of the Harlem Renaissance were African-American urban migration, trends toward experimentation throughout the country and the rise of radical African-American intellectuals Where the Harlem Renaissance Started It started in a Northern Manhattan Neighborhood of Harlem but later spread throughout all of Harlem. *Important Places of the Harlem Renaissance* The Cotton Club Located At 644 Lenox Ave. and 142nd St. Opened in 1927. Featured scantily clad light-skinned black female dancers, high- profile black headliner entertainment and a strictly white clientele. You went there when seeking an "exotic" cultural experience while remaining shielded from personal encounters with black people. Strivers' Row It is actually a group of town homes, built in 1890, located on 138th and 139th Streets, between Powell Boulevard and Douglass Boulevard. "Strivers' Row" earned its nickname during the Harlem Renaissance era because of the ambitious residents the homes attracted, along with well-to-do doctors, entertainers and other high-status black residents. Among the many prestigious black residents was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance movement, Henry Pace. Pace founded Black Swan Records, the first black-owned record label in the United States. They remain a desirable address even in the 21st century. Selling the Sounds of the South: The visual and verbal rhetoric of Race Records and Old Time Records marketing, 1920-1929 Luke Horton Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Dec, 2011 School of Historical and Philosophical Studies University of Melbourne Abstract In the early 1920s, the phonograph industry in America began producing two very distinct record catalogues of racially segregated Southern vernacular music, one called Race Records and the other called Old Time (or 'Old Time Tunes', 'Songs of the Hills and Plains', 'Familiar Tunes Old and New' and towards the end of the decade simply 'hillbilly' records). In the marketing for these new catalogues, two completely separate streams of Southern music were presented, one purely white and one purely black, a separation that denied any possibility or history of the intermingling of the races, a bifurcation of a shared tradition which became a revision of Southern history, and a segregation in keeping with the race policy of the Jim Crow era. ‘Selling the Sounds of the South’ argues that the verbal and visual rhetoric of the marketing for these new catalogues of music (contained not only in catalogues themselves, but in advertisements, window displays, and other promotional material), presented a unique utilisation of Southern images that offered a new definition of Southern black and white music. While heavily reliant on existing constructions of white and black musical culture, the creation of these catalogues involved the recasting of major cultural tropes and resulted in an intertextual construct that itself was something new.
