Introduction Melbourne Airport is Australia’s second largest airport in terms of aircraft and passenger movements (Melbourne Airport 2011). It covers an area of 2,367 hectares, which covers a range of habitats, both native and exotic, and is the responsible authority for managing this land asset. An important component of managing this asset is to reduce hazards associated with such a large land parcel. Key amongst these is the potential for the vegetation within the airport to attract birds, bats and other fauna species that could interfere with the running of the airport, and in particular, collide with aircraft using the airport. Wildlife strikes are not a large problem at most airports (Thorpe 1990 cited in Steele et al. 2011). Despite this, 1,700 wildlife strikes, the majority of them bird strikes, have been reported at Melbourne Airport since 1984 (Steele et al 2011). It is clear that this figure should be minimised and an important way in which to do this, is to minimise the attractiveness of the airport for wildlife, in particular birds. At other airports, this is achieved through the selection of that do not attract wildlife to the area. These plants are typically characterised by the absence of large sources of nectar and fruit, on which wildlife may feed. This guide to plant species that are suitable for planting within Melbourne Airport and surrounds has been developed from a list of species that were reviewed for their potential to attract animals to the Airport and is based on the local conditions at the Airport (Steele et al. 2011). The species in it possess traits that make it unlikely that birds or bats, in particular, will be attracted to the airport. None of the species are preferred food for any wildlife species, and low rates of fruiting and nectar production mean that they contribute little to the diets of most wildlife species. The guide has been developed to suit a range of applications and locations. Many of the plants in this guide are indigenous to the Melbourne Airport region and are suitable for revegetation projects within the property. These plants are labelled as ‘Indigenous’ in the guide. Other plants, listed as ‘Native’ are found naturally in other parts of Australia, but do not naturally occur within the Melbourne Airport region. Finally, a range of plants are marked as ‘Exotic’ because they are not native to Australia and are common cultivated plant varieties. Neither the ‘Native’ nor the ‘Exotic’ plants should be used for revegetation projects in remnant vegetation, but should be confined to garden situations or places were the natural integrity of the surrounding vegetation is low. This guide should be used by a range of people who will be choosing plants for planting within the Airport Environs Overlay (on or surrounding the airport). In the past, similar guidelines have been provided to developers of land within the airport, as well as developers of land adjacent to the airport in places that may be sensitive to the risk of bird strike. Within the airport, this guide will be used in a review process of proposed landscape plans. Outside of the airport, the guide will be enforced through provisions within planning permits issued for any development within these areas.

How to use this guide This guide is sorted by the growth form of the various plants and the location that it comes from. This enables the reader to easily compare a range of similar species.

Size: Width x height. Although a size is given for each species, the actual size that the plant will achieve depends on a range of parameters including the watering frequency, the aspect, soil types and competition with other species. Life Cycle: Species are designated as ‘Evergreen’ if they retain their leaves all year round or ‘Deciduous’ if they shed their leaves in an annual cycle. Drought Tolerance: Plants are rated according to their ability to withstand extended dry periods. Plants rated ‘Moderate’ or better will not require additional watering once they are established. Sun Tolerance: Plants are assessed for the optimal amount of sunlight that they receive. Most plants in this list will thrive in full sunlight, although some require more cover. Soil Types: Broad categories of soil types are used to recommend the types of soils in which the plants will thrive. Other types of soil types may be suitable for some plants, however they may need additional care if planted in these situations. Compaction Resistance: The ability of plants to withstand compaction from vehicular or pedestrian traffic is categorised here. Compaction can affect the ability of a plant to take up water and can affect the growth of a plant’s root system. Little data is available on this facet of the plant’s ecology for most species in this guide. Availability: Although many of the plants in this guide are readily available from commercial nurseries, some of the indigenous plants will require a special order from indigenous plant nurseries and extended lead time, depending on the plant that is requested. Common Uses: Where species are widely available and grown in garden and revegetation situations some of the common uses of these plants are listed. Where plants are not common cultivars this field may be left empty. Maximum planting density to reduce bird attractiveness A potentially hazardous consequence of landscaping works is the formation of roosting habitat for birds, particularly high threat birds, in particular, Starlings (Steele et al. 2011). To minimise the potential attractiveness of the site for roosting dense plantings should be avoided. If the proposed planting is intended to provide a screening function, staggered planting in rows may be required, and blocks of plantings should be avoided.

Melbourne Airport Planting Guidelines Page 5

The following maximum planting densities should be considered a guide to the number of plants required in a particular area:  Ground covers, herbs, grasses, climbers and small shrubs: 1 plant/metre2;  Medium shrubs, small trees: 1 plant/4 metre2;  Large Shrubs, Medium trees: 1 plant/9 metre2; and,  Large Trees: 1 plant/16 metre2.

Unsuitable species Species were considered unsuitable for planting in the Melbourne airport environs based on:  The risk of the plants attracting high risk bird and bat species;  The plants weedy nature;  High maintenance requirements (including short lived and difficult to establish species);  Occupational health and safety risks other than bird/bat strikes (eg. presence of sharp spines). The following species were considered unsuitable for planting in the Melbourne Airport environs based. The rationale for deeming these species unsuitable is further outlined in Appendix 1. Table 1.
