2009 Players Biel International Chess Festival Players Boris Gelfand Israel, 41 yo Elo: 2755 World ranking: 9 Date and place of birth: 24.6.1968, in Minsk (Belarus) Lives in: Rishon-le-Zion (Israel) Israel ranking: 1 Best world ranking: 3 (January 1991) In Biel GMT: winner in 1993 (Interzonal) and 2005. Other results: 3rd (1995, 1997, 2001), 4th (2000) Two Decades at the Top of Chess This is not a comeback, since Boris Gelfand never left the chess elite in the last twenty years. However, at the age of 41, the Israeli player has reached a new peak and is experiencing a a third wind. He is back in the world Top-10, officially as number 9 (in fact, a virtual number 5, if one takes into account his latest results that have not yet been recorded). He had not been ranked so high since 2006. Age does not seem to matter for this player who is unanimously appreciated in the field, both for his technical prowess and his personality. In Biel, he will not only be the senior player of the Grandmaster tournament, but also the top ranked and the Festival’s most loyal participant. Since his first appearance in 1993, he has come seven times to Biel; it is precisely at this Festival that he earned one of his greatest victories: in 1993, he finished first in the Interzonal Tournament (which, by then, was the only qualifying competition for the world championship), out of 73 participating grandmasters (including Anand and Kramnik). His victory in Biel against Anand is mentioned in his book, My Most Memorable Games.

  • Chapter 2 Introduction: the Enigmatic Zukertort
Chapter 2 Introduction: The Enigmatic Zukertort The Zukertort is a symphony of irony. Why do you say that? Well, to begin at the beginning, in his annotations to the oft-quoted seminal game on his opening, Zukertort v. Black- burne 1883, Zukertort wrote that he planned to play the whole game on the Q-side. Now players typically think of the system as one long, prepared attack on the enemy’s King. Secondly, the opening is called the “Colle-Zukertort,” even though Colle practically never played it. In fact, in my own personal data- base I have many hundreds of games where Colle played what is now known as the “Colle-Koltanowski,” but not a single game where he played the Zukertort except when his opponent used the Queen’s Indian Defense. Thirdly, it is unclear why the Colle-Koltanowski and the Colle-Zukertort are so often put in the same book. We do not see books for Black containing in-depth coverage of both the Dragon and Najdorf variations of the Sicilian. We do not see repertoire books for White going deeply into both the Botvin- nik and Meran variations of the Semi-slav. Why package these two very different systems in the same text? The Enigmatic Zukertort Fourthly, a thorough inves- very much different than he tigation of the Zukertort will can if he castles early (as we show that it appears to have shall see). no real mainline! • Combinatorics on the Chessboard
Combinatorics on the Chessboard Interactive game: 1. On regular chessboard a rook is placed on a1 (bottom-left corner). Players A and B take alternating turns by moving the rook upwards or to the right by any distance (no left or down movements allowed). Player A makes the rst move, and the winner is whoever rst reaches h8 (top-right corner). Is there a winning strategy for any of the players? Solution: Player B has a winning strategy by keeping the rook on the diagonal. Knight problems based on invariance principle: A knight on a chessboard has a property that it moves by alternating through black and white squares: if it is on a white square, then after 1 move it will land on a black square, and vice versa. Sometimes this is called the chameleon property of the knight. This is related to invariance principle, and can be used in problems, such as: 2. A knight starts randomly moving from a1, and after n moves returns to a1. Prove that n is even. Solution: Note that a1 is a black square. Based on the chameleon property the knight will be on a white square after odd number of moves, and on a black square after even number of moves. Therefore, it can return to a1 only after even number of moves. 3. Is it possible to move a knight from a1 to h8 by visiting each square on the chessboard exactly once? Solution: Since there are 64 squares on the board, a knight would need 63 moves to get from a1 to h8 by visiting each square exactly once.

  • Chess2vec: Learning Vector Representations for Chess
Chess2vec: Learning Vector Representations for Chess Berk Kapicioglu Ramiz Iqbal∗ Tarik Koc OccamzRazor MD Anderson Cancer Center OccamzRazor [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Louis Nicolas Andre Katharina Sophia Volz OccamzRazor OccamzRazor [email protected] [email protected] Abstract We conduct the first study of its kind to generate and evaluate vector representations for chess pieces. In particular, we uncover the latent structure of chess pieces and moves, as well as predict chess moves from chess positions. We share preliminary results which anticipate our ongoing work on a neural network architecture that learns these embeddings directly from supervised feedback. 1 Introduction In the last couple of years, advances in machine learning have yielded dramatic improvements in tasks as diverse as visual object classification [9], automatic speech recognition [7], machine translation [18], and natural language processing (NLP) [12]. A common thread among all these tasks is, as diverse as they may seem, they all involve processing input data, such as image, audio, and text, that have not traditionally been amenable to feature engineering. Modern machine learning methods that enabled these breakthroughs did so partly because they shifted the burden away from feature engineering, which is difficult for humans and requires domain expertise, towards designing models that automatically infer feature representations that are relevant for downstream tasks [1]. In this paper, we are interested in learning and studying feature representations of chess positions and pieces. Our work is inspired by how learning vector representation of words [12, 13], also known as word embeddings, yielded improvements in tasks such as syntactic parsing [16] and sentiment analysis [17].
