In Titus Andronicus, Chiron and Demetrius are baked in a pie and eaten by their mother. Gloucester’s eyes are plucked out in King Lear. In contradistinction to this graphic excess are moments when violence is relegated off-stage: Macbeth kills King Duncan in private; when Richard III suborns the assassination of his nephews—the notorious ‘Princes in the Tower’—the boys are killed away from the audience. In such instances, the spectator must imagine the scope and formation of the violence described. Focussing on Richard III, this article asks why Shakespeare uses the word ‘massacre’ to express the murder of the two princes. Determining the varied, and competing, meanings of the term in the 16th and 17th centuries, the article uncovers a range of ways an early audience might have interpreted the killings—as mass murder, assassination, and butchery—and demonstrates their thematic connections to child-killing across the cycle of plays that Richard III concludes. III MEMETIC REFRAMING Christian Patterson’s Redheaded Peckerwood In December 1957, Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate embarked on a murder spree that shocked the US population. And even today, more than sixty years later, the so-called ‘Starkweather case’ keeps haunting the North American people as part of the country’s collective imagination. This situation is testified to by Christian Patterson’s evolving photobook Redheaded Peckerwood (2011, 2012, 2013),404 which contains a visually diverse selection of photographs, each of which points suggestively to the Starkweather case.405 The historical murder spree is undoubtedly Redheaded Peckerwood’s narrative centre. However, I argue that the criminal case merely serves a reflection on how ‘frames’, which are sets of conventions that govern the representation of historical events, are disseminated in culture.406 That argument, I claim, is conditioned by a memetic principle of rereading that allows the frame to appear multiple times according to the meme’s emergent logic of imitation through variation. ‘Memes’, according to Richard Dawkins’s initial definition of the phenomenon, are units of cultural transmission that propagate themselves in ever-changing form by leaping from brain to brain, often via magazines, computers, movies, and other technological platforms.407 Humans cannot entirely control these processes,408 and I argue that the same might be said of the process of rereading Redheaded Peckerwood, since it is partially governed by algorithms. The smartphone revolution around 2010 introduces the so-called ‘post-digital’ era, that is, the situation wherein humans no longer control the digital realm, since portable digital devices allow for a permanent extension of subjectivity across the Internet.409 Within this contemporary context, I contend that humans are habituated to meeting ambiguity and elusiveness with immediate online searches. -

Therefore, one of the best known but rarely examined visual representations of St. Bartholomewʼs Day Massacre, the sole known contemporary Huguenot painting, was chosen: François Duboisʼ St. Bartholomewʼs Day Massacre5. Dubois opened the memory box of massacre when composing his depiction of the historical massacre on St. Bartholomewʼs Day, using layers from this box and adding new aspects hitherto not linked with it. -

SHAKESPEAREAN TRAGEDY HAMLET AS SHAKESPEAREAN TRAGEDY: A CRITICAL STUDY Rameshsingh M.Chauhan ISSN 2277-7733 Assistant Professor, Volume 8 Issue 1, Sardar Vallabhbhai Vanijya Mahavidyalaya,Ahmedabad June 2019 Abstract Hamlet is often called an "Elizabethan revenge play", the theme of revenge against an evil usurper driving the plot forward as in earlier stage works by Shakespeare's contemporaries, Kyd and Marlowe, as well as by the .As in those works avenging a moral injustice, an affront to both man and God. In this case, regicide (killing a king) is a particularly monstrous crime, and there is no doubt as to whose side our sympathies are disposed. The paper presents the criticism of Hamlet as Shakespearean tragedy. Keywords: Hamlet, Tragedy, Shakespeare, Shakespearean Tragedy As in many revenge plays, and, in fact, several of Shakespeare's other tragedies (and histories), a corrupt act, the killing of a king, undermines order throughout the realm that resonates to high heaven. We learn that there is something "rotten" in Denmark after old Hamlet's death in the very first scene, as Horatio compares the natural and civil disorders that occurred in Rome at the time of Julius Caesar's assassination to the disease that afflicts Denmark. These themes and their figurative expression are common to the Elizabethan revenge play genre in which good must triumph over evil.Throughout Hamlet we encounter a great deal of word play, Shakespeare using a vast number of multivalent terms ranging from gross puns to highly-nuanced words that evoke a host of diverse associations and images. While Hamlet can tell this difference between a "hawk and a handsaw," the play challenges the assumption that language itself can convey human experience or hold stable meaning. -

Two Mass Murder and Spree Murder Two Types of Multicides A convicted killer recently paroled from prison in Tennessee has been charged with the murder of six people, including his brother, Cecil Dotson, three other adults, and two children. The police have arrested Jessie Dotson, age 33. The killings, which occurred in Memphis, Tennessee, occurred in February 2008. There is no reason known at this time for the murders. (Courier-Journal, March 9, 2008, p. A-3) A young teenager’s boyfriend killed her mother and two brothers, ages 8 and 13. Arraigned on murder charges in Texas were the girl, a juvenile, her 19-year-old boyfriend, Charlie James Wilkinson, and two others on three charges of capital murder. The girl’s father was shot five times but survived. The reason for the murders? The parents did not want their daughter dating Wilkinson. (Wolfson, 2008) Introduction There is a great deal of misunderstanding about the three types of multi- cide: serial murder, mass murder, and spree murder. This chapter will list the traits and characteristics of these three types of killers, as well as the traits and characteristics of the killings themselves. 15 16 SERIAL MURDER Recently, a school shooting occurred in Colorado. Various news outlets erroneously reported the shooting as a spree killing. Last year in Nevada, a man entered a courtroom and killed three people. This, too, was erro- neously reported as a spree killing. Both should have been labeled instead as mass murder. The assigned labels by the media have little to do with motivations and anticipated gains in the original effort to label it some type of multicide. -

Starkweather was convicted in the murder of Robert Jensen of Bennet, Nebraska in 1958. Although Starkweather claimed involvement in a total of eleven murders between January 21 and January 29, 1958, he was convicted and sentenced to death for only the first degree murder of Jensen and for murder while in the perpetration of robbery. Starkweather’s girlfriend, Caril Fugate, received a life sentence as an accomplice in the Jensen murder, although she claimed that she was Starkweather’s hostage during the week-long murder spree. Beginning with the murders of Fugate’s mother, stepfather, and infant half-sister, the two allegedly killed seven others in Lancaster County, Nebraska, and one other person during their escape attempt in Wyoming. Starkweather, after numerous appeals and stays of execution, was electrocuted on June 25, 1959. Fugate spent eighteen years in the Women’s Reformatory at York, Nebraska before being paroled in 1976. Upon parole, Fugate was given a new identity and an out- of-state residence. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection consists of manuscript materials arranged in two series: 1) Research materials for “Murder in the Heartland,” and 2) Newspaper clippings, 1958-1973. The materials relate to the murders committed by Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate in January, 1958. Series 1 – Research materials for “Murder in the Heartland,” consists entirely of photocopies of research materials compiled for the ABC-TV miniseries, “Murder in the Heartland,” (1993). -

There is a national lack of awareness of the most predominant type of mass murder. This thesis hypothesized that the majority of mass murders in the United States are mass murder familicides. It is further hypothesized that most mass murder familicides are committed by Caucasian men in their 30s and 40s. Data from two sources were used: the USA Today Behind the Bloodshed database, and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) for the years 2006- 2016. It was also necessary to use supplemental data from media accounts where data was missing or in doubt. Mass murder familicides were tallied from both databases. They were then categorized to determine if mass murder familicide was the most common form of mass murder, testing hypothesis one. Ages and race of offenders were then tallied to determine support for hypothesis two, that most offenders were Caucasian and in their 30s and 40s. -

Inter-American Model Law on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of the Gender-Related Killing of Women and Girls(Femicide/Feminicide) The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the nations of the Western hemisphere to promote democracy, strengthen human rights, foster peace, security and cooperation and advance common interests. The origins of the Organization date back to 1890 when nations of the region formed the Pan American Union to forge closer hemispheric relations. This union later evolved into the OAS and in 1948, 21 nations signed its governing charter. Since then, the OAS has expanded to include the nations of the English-speaking Caribbean and Canada, and today all of the independent nations of North, Central and South America and the Caribbean make up its 35 member states. The Follow-up Mechanism to the Belém do Pará Convention(MESECVI) is an independent, consensus- based peer evaluation system that looks at the progress made by States Party to the Convention in fulfilling its objectives. MESECVI is financed by voluntary contributions from the States Party to the Convention and other donors, and the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the OAS acts as its Secretariat.
