January 2016 Newsletter

The President’s Address:

Greetings Membership and Board Members:

I wish everyone a very Happy and Successful New Year! As we move forward into the year 2016 it is with great hope that we can continue to work together to serve the Miami Valley and those in need.

The President's Club would like to extend our sincere gratitude to each service club and it's volunteer's. It is through your time and talent's donated, that so many receive much needed help in their time of need. Maybe your club paid rent for a family on the verge of eviction, or brought food to families, or paid someone’s Lay-a Way at K-Mart, Christmas was given to area children, mentors took time to help educate a child and so much more.

We are so blessed to have a community of volunteers who care about their community and want to see change. This year The President's club would like to partner with our area service clubs and do a one day outreach event together. We are looking for ideas and a planning committee if you are interested please contact me at [email protected]. There are many needs yet to be met. I am excited to see what we all can do as ONE organized group.

If you have not updated your club’s information, a copy of the Membership Form is below. Your organization can also pay dues for 2016.

Our Next meeting date is January 20, 2016 at 11:30 am. Location is the Masonic Temple. I look forward to seeing you all there. Sincerely,

Cindy Davidson

May 12th – Best Member Breakfast Awards at Presidential Banquet Center (Save the date)

May 13th - Bob Chiles Golf Classic at Twin Base Golf Course – Volunteers needed to work on golf committee with Tony Massoud, last year the PCoD made $1772.00 for non-profit projects and a $7,000 donation was made to the Fisher/Nightingale House. We need sponsors and golfers. The process is that after the Fisher House contribution is determined the remainder of the money raised is divided based on the amount of income (Player and Sponsor) that each club raised. For 2015 that was MVMAA 74% and PCoD 26%. Those funds are then used to support other charitable projects for each club.

It is important that we stress the importance of all members getting sponsors...even Hole Sponsors mount up! Can we get 6 Hole Sponsor signs on each hole! We all need to work on getting those numbers up.

JERRY DOUGLAS LEGGETT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Dayton International Peace Museum Board of Trustees appointed Jerry Leggett as Executive Director beginning on April 15, 2014. Leggett has an extensive background in non-profit management and strategic planning in addition to fund-raising, digital communication, volunteer management, and production of community events.

Chris and Ralph Dull and the citizens of Dayton are giving wings to a programs, including WPAFB new generation of peacemakers who offer a fresh voice for peace in our world. This vision is echoed in the words of the late Pete Seeger, one of my peace Fisher/Nightingale House mentors, who often said, “We’re building a world where everyone has something to share

and no one is ostracized.” A 21ST CENTURY FORMULA FOR PEACE Contact Angel Lewis Building on the inspiration of great inventors such as the Wright Brothers, Leggett will talk about Dayton's proud (937) 371-9555 history of innovating peace through grassroots community organizations such as the Dayton International Peace Museum. Leggett will add a touch of live music and stories from his experiences across the world where he has engaged diverse audiences with the question, "What does a more peaceful world look like for you?"

Peter Roll, Director of Resident Home Association Peter Roll, Director of Resident Home Association will be speaking. Mr. Roll has worked for Resident Home Association since 1987. He was a Program Manager for 10 years prior to becoming Assistant Director in 1997. He served as Assistant Director for 11 years. In 2009 he became Director. Pete has worked many years in the field of Developmental Disabilities. Prior to Resident Home Association he was a Case Manager for Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Resident Home Association has been serving clients with Developmental Disabilities throughout Dayton since 1966. What began with a group of parents, 50 years ago, seeking to find a “normal” life for their children in the community has grown into an agency that provides housing and transportation along with day programming for 80 people in the Dayton area. He will speak about “The Neighbor next door”.

Potential Presidents Club Role in

Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team* to Dayton in 2016 Local Miami Valley softball & veterans’ community is hosting the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) in our area on 20-21 May 2016. Venue is Wright State University’s Ron Nischwitz Stadium. Two games: 9:00am = WWAST vs. Local Military & 1st Responder All Stars 3:30pm = WWAST vs. Dayton Legends Softball Club All-Stars The Hosting Challenge. There are two types of expenses to host: WWAST expenses & event expenses. Both must be paid prior to any contributions to the Fisher House project at Dayton VA Center, which gets all the proceeds after expenses. The Sponsorship Challenge. Corporate & Individual sponsors/donors are looking to contribute almost exclusively to 501c3 organizations. While we have hopes for some corporate support, it is more realistic to consider this a grass-roots effort… with our competitor constituencies & veterans organizations helping to fund the event. Proposed Help. We are asking Warren Co Veterans Service Commissioners help us to solicit corporate sponsorships, organizational & individual donations, and support fund raisers. Please help us network to your constituents.  Help us network to advertise to your members; Newsletter blurbs/fliers? Emphasis: 50th Ann. of Vietnam recognition, immediately after Game #1.  “Like” us on Facebook (and we’ll Like you back!): https://www.facebook.com/WoundedWarriorSoftballinDayton  Request that your Members consider buying tickets for veterans who may not be able to attend due to financial reasons; consider an ad in our event program.

May, 2016 Newsletter

The President’s Address:

Greetings,

It is with great “pride” and “optimism” that I accept the position of President of the prestigious President’s club effective May 6th, 2016. Our previous president unfortunately was not able to continue her term. We will miss Cindy and hope that she will return at a future date.

Let me take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself and what my goals are for the upcoming year with the President’s club. As with most of our volunteers, I wear many hats. In addition to my most important responsibility with my family, I work full time. I am a Medicare Specialist with Seniors Financial Services, a division of Spicer Wealth Management. I assist individuals with choosing the best Medicare option for them when they become eligible for Medicare or anytime they want to make a change.

I am the President of the Centerville Lions club and a member of the Riverdale Optimist club. I enjoy both of these clubs very much and am proud to be able to serve. These two clubs and the President’s club have given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. I hope to meet many more of you over the next two years. I would like the opportunity to visit every club at one of your regular meetings.

The President’s club board met last week. Some of our goals for the upcoming year are to offer additional events for our member clubs and to increase our membership. Last month we had a special event and brought in Marianne Bailey to show us all how to get the most out of social media. We want to do more events like this to help all our clubs grow. Please let us know of any special interests our club might have. Our website has been updated. This is done on an ongoing basis, so please check your club’s information and let us know if it is not correct. Our speaker list continues to grow.

Upcoming events include our volunteer breakfast this Thursday, Bob Chiles Golf Classic Friday supporting the Fisher/Nightingale House at WPAFB, and our June 16th luncheon. We will not have a regular meeting this month, so I hope to see everyone at our breakfast Thursday. We are honoring 24 wonderful volunteers. Natalie Tendall from WDTN TV Channel 2 will be our guest speaker. Pastor Baldwin with the Centerville Seventh-Day Adventist Church will be saying the Invocation and Benediction. First Florist has again donated flowers for all our recipients. We appreciate this. This will be a great breakfast so please have all your club members attend.

Three Speakers for our June meeting are finalized, Angie Hoschouer, PMP Manager of Development and Marketing, Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum, Lois Elrich, Real Change Business Coaching, and Susan Gnann, Marketing and Development Manager, Dayton, Ohio Affiliate Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation, Inc.

We will skip July and meet again in August. The Board wishes to provide the organizations that attend the luncheon meetings with a speaker’s list you can use as well as try to establish future program calendar of events and speakers. Please include the information in your organization’s newsletter by providing the link when you receive these so all your members are aware of what we are doing. (www.presidentsclubdayton.org)

We are busy planning our Citizen Legion of Honor Luncheon for October. This will be a great luncheon. You will definitely want to be there to see the presentation of this award and the scholarships. I won’t reveal who the recipient is, but this individual is well deserving of the award. Please mark your calendar.

Sincerely, Amy Gephart

Organization Speaker Programs - Community Information Leaders

In an effort to support our PCoD members and the public, this section is dedicated to providing a list of area information leaders, whether they be not-for-profits; elected officials and/or specific topic experts. These individuals, if contacted, may make themselves available to speak at club meetings or special events and share important programs, projects, issues or topics with audiences about our community and perhaps where additional volunteer leadership can play an important role in the success of these programs.

This list may change from time to time in order to keep it updated. But it is a great reference guide to many areas of arts, social services, business, government and education in our community. http://presidentsclubdayton.org/index.php/community

June, 2016 Newsletter

The President’s Address:

Happy Summer,

I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather we have been having. It seems like once again, we jumped from cold, rainy weather to super-hot. I am a summer person, so I am loving the heat!

May was such a busy month. We had the Volunteer Awards breakfast which went really well. We recognized some outstanding volunteers. Thanks again to the board members for all their hard work to put on such a great event. Also thanks to everyone who attended and another big thankyou to Reverend Dr. Carter. The presentation with the photos inserted for the recipients is attached. Please share with your members. The link is https://www.dropbox.com/s/zyn7fx5f623820c/Presidents%Club%20of%20Dayton%20Breakfast_2016.pdf? dl=0

We also had the Bob Chiles golf outing which was very successful. A lot of men and women were out there playing golf and having a great time. We raised a lot of money for the Fischer House. Angel Lewis, Holly Beard, Jerry Pfeifer, Stephen Goeman and Emma Sheridan from the MVMAA were on the committee along with Tony Massoud, Al Jecker and I from the President’s club. We met monthly, then weekly throughout the past six months. I have to say I miss all of them. We had some great working lunches at Hope Hotel, then at the golf course when it opened for the season. Please put this event in your calendar for next year.

On a personal note, my daughter graduated from the North Eastern Ohio School of Medicine, NEOMED, last month with her Pharm. D. She is now Dr. Sasha. It was great to attend her graduation. It was very impressive to see over 200 students receive their MD, Pharm. D or PH.D. Many of our clubs present scholarships to deserving high school or college students, so it was nice to see all of these students receive these advanced degrees. There were some graduates that were joining the armed forces, so we had the privilege of watching them take their oath.

October will be here soon and we will be having our annual Citizen Legion of Honor luncheon and presenting our recipient with this award and four scholarships. As you know, this award was established in 1951 and is the region’s premier volunteer recognition honoring community servant leaders for their unselfish dedication to our area and its people. Our very deserving recipient of the CLOH this year is none other than our Phil Parker who has been involved with the President’s club for many years. He is a Dayton Club Rotarian and CEO of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. It will be an honor to see him receive this award. Please make sure your club members are aware of this luncheon and they get their tickets early. I think we are going to have a big crowd. Please see our website for more information about Phil and the CLOH award. Our June meeting will be held on the Wednesday the 15th at 11:30AM at the Masonic Temple. We have some great speakers lined up. I know you will enjoy hearing about Woodland Cometary and Arboretum from Angie Hoschouer. Lois Elrich from Real Change Business Coaching will enlighten us. You might learn something about yourself. We did have a change from our previous list of speakers. We will be having Dave Seyer from the Dayton, Ohio Affiliate Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation, Inc. These three speakers will each give us a five minute presentation on their organizations. You will want to book them for one of your upcoming meetings. I have seen the full presentations, and they are all awesome. I could listen to Angie’s stories about the cemetery for several hours. I plan on taking one of the tours there as soon as I can. Maybe Dave can bring us some donuts.

Please remember to take advantage of your benefit by getting your announcements listed in this newsletter. I always like to see what other clubs are doing and attend different activities if I can. One of our goals is to support each other. We can’t do this unless we know what each other’s needs are. Let us know when those golf outings and 5K runs are scheduled. You are all welcome to run or walk in the Centerville Lions 5K on July 9th at Oak Grove Park.

Hope to see everyone on June 15th at 11:30AM at the Masonic Temple for our next meeting. Remember, we will not be having a meeting in July, so this upcoming meeting will be our last time to get together for a while. Let’s make it a great meeting.

Sincerely, Amy Gephart

July, 2016 Newsletter

The President’s Address:

Happy 4th of July!

I know I am a little late wishing you a Happy 4th, but I hope everyone had a great time and enjoyed the fireworks. My husband, Spencer, and I watched the fireworks at Indian Lake on Saturday. I always enjoy that. I watched them from my house in Centerville on Monday night. Two great nights of fireworks! My dog is still trying to recover from all the noise and she was inside.

As you know, we do not have a meeting this month, which works out great for me as July is a very busy month. I am certified to sell Medicare Advantage plans, Prescription Drug plans, and on the exchange for under 65 healthcare plans. I sell Medicare Advantage plans as well. Anyway, July is the month in which we can start recertifying for the 2017 season. Those of you on Medicare know Annual enrollment starts in October. That is the time you start getting all the cards and phone calls. Now is the time, everyone else starts getting ready for it. I have already spent 12 hours on the computer and am not even half way through it yet.

Our meetings will resume in August with three great speakers. I can’t tell you who they are now, as we are still finalizing some plans, but if we get the individuals we are planning, it will be a meeting you will not want to miss. Please remember we provide speakers for your benefit. Our speakers are interested in coming to your individual clubs to present to the rest of your organization. Please contact them if you are interested. Also, we have a list of speakers on our website that you can also call to schedule. This has been recently updated.

Speaking of updates, please visit our website and see the changes we have made. You can now see a complete list of all the past recipients of the Citizen Legion of Honor Award. It also lists out their organization affiliation. We continue to work on the plans for this year’s CLOH luncheon. Please mark your calendars now for Thursday, October 6, 2016. Please see the attached form if you are interested in sponsoring this event. We are expecting a great turn out for this and hope to see all clubs represented. We will be mailing tickets out to the Presidents of each club in September.

One more important update, we would like to welcome Barbara Layne with the Riverdale Optimist Club to our board. She has been on the board before and did such a great job that we asked her to come back. We are looking forward to working with Barb.

As always, please let us know of any upcoming events your club is doing. We will get it posted on the website or send out an announcement for you. We look forward to hearing about your events at the meetings as well.

Each member organization should have received information through your president regarding the Citizen Legion Award Event this October, please visit http://presidentsclubdayton.org/ for details. Your organization will be sent 8 tickets and this supports the 4 scholarships we give every year to Sinclair Students. This year’s recipient is Phillip L. Parker, CAE, CCE, he is the 66th recipient of the region’s 2016 Citizen Legion of Honor Award. The award, given every year since 1951, is the oldest and most continuous recognition of community volunteer service in the Dayton region. Please pass this information on to the golfers in your organization. Unfortunately, the PCoD Newsletter won't be sent until July and this information should be out now to help support these two member organizations who provide excellent services to the Miami Valley Area.

August, 2016 Newsletter

The President’s Address:

Hello Members,

Can you believe it is August already? I went shopping the other day and almost cried when I saw Halloween costumes out already. I enjoy summer way too much and want it to stay as long as it can. That is not to say I don’t enjoy the fall. To me fall means the start of a busy Medicare annual enrollment period which I really enjoy. I also love seeing the trees change color. I don’t like the different colors so much when I have to rake them up, but while on the tree, they are just beautiful. And who doesn’t love school starting and the many activities this brings? However, for now, I will continue to enjoy the rest of the summer and think about fall when it gets here. I figure I have a few more weeks to work on my tan.

We have been busy getting ready for our Annual Citizen Legion of Honor award luncheon (another great fall event). We have been contacting clubs and our sponsors to let them know to save the date. Have you marked your calendar yet? Do so now. The date is Thursday October 6th. Phil Parker is our recipient this year. We know we will have a great turnout, so make sure you get your tickets in early to guarantee a table up front. You will not want to miss this event.

Our board also met last month for a very productive planning meeting. We have reviewed and revised the Code of Regulations for The Presidents Club of Dayton. It is attached. If you have an old copy, please replace it with this one. We are happy with the changes as they bring us up to date.

Many of you are enjoying a break in club meetings for the summer, but will soon be planning your activities. Please make sure to send us a flyer or information about this and we will get it in the newsletter so other clubs know about it. I really enjoy hearing what other clubs are doing and try to attend events if I can. My husband thinks I am trying to set a world record by attending as many other club events as possible, but I am not keeping count. Again, please let us know when your events are scheduled.

I am really excited about our meeting this month. It is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17th. I hope to see all of you there. We have three wonderful speakers, two of which I have had the pleasure to know for a while. I look forward to meeting the third one. This month, we seem to have a theme. See if you can guess what it is. The first person to figure it out and attends this month’s meeting, wins a prize at the meeting.

Out first speaker is Diane Schoeffler-Warren, a member of the Southwest Ohio JDRF board. She is going to speak to us about Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. Diane will inform us of some of the latest research.

Following this, we will hear from Paulette Bair, a Food Service Director/ Chef. She is a co-coordinator of the Complete Health Improvement Program and will address how eating habits and lifestyle changes can prevent and even reverse many other diseases. I have had the privilege of helping Paulette with some of her classes. She is a wonderful chef and always brings the best dishes. I almost wish I could cook as well as she can. Notice I said almost wish. The kitchen has never been my favorite place to be. This is a link to her flier https://www.dropbox.com/s/zw1dswhncjk2slb/CHIP%20flyer.pdf?dl=0

Our third speaker is another person I have had the honor of getting to know and hear him speak on several occasions. David Wright with Paradigm Performance Group will enlighten us. I can’t tell you exactly what David will speak about as he has so many interesting topics, but I will tell you I have always enjoyed his talks. I asked him to speak at the Riverdale Optimist Club one day and everyone wanted him to come back again. His goal is to empower others to BE, DO, HAVE and SERVE MORE.

That is just a quick word on each one of them. You will have to attend the meeting to learn more about them. Please read their Bios and come prepared to hear them speak. Bios are below for each speaker.

Again, I am looking forward to seeing everyone on August 17th at 11:30AM at the Masonic Temple. Please call me if you have any questions.

The President’s Address:

Happy September.

To those of you who took the summer off, Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer and a super Labor Day weekend! I have to say a special congratulations to our Vice President and Board Member, Jack Akerman and his lovely wife, Arlene. They were the 2016 Grand Marshalls for the Holiday at Home Parade in Kettering. Please see the attached clip. https://youtu.be/SKQGio7Hvuc

I said last month that I wanted to see summer continue as long as possible. While this is true, the fall is my second favorite time of year. I enjoy all four seasons, but summer and fall are my favorites. What is even better is summer like weather in the fall of the year. Spencer and I will be heading to Jamaica this month to extend our summer in a nice warm climate. I am still working on that tan and hope to get in some relaxation time before Medicare Annual Enrollment starts in October.

The Presidents Club will be really busy over the next two months. We will have our regular meeting on the third Wednesday, September 21st starting at 11:30AM at the Masonic Temple. As always, we have some great speakers lined up for you.

We have Tom Culpepper with Culpepper law who will be speaking to us about the necessity of having your affairs in order.

We also have Dr. Donna Schlagheck, a professor from Wright state university who may answer some of our questions about why the Presidential debate was cancelled by the university.

We also have Rich Deaton, a sales and technical services representative for Birchwood Genetics, Inc., He will be speaking on the American pork industry. He does a great presentation and you might be surprised by the new technology for raising pigs. Even my fellow vegetarians will find this interesting.

This will be a meeting you will not want to miss. Bios are listed below. Please make sure to tell all of your members about the meeting and let them know they are welcome to attend. Leslie at the Masonic Temple asked me to tell you the main road will be closed due to a festival, so please use Grafton Street to access the parking lot. She will have signs up to direct you.

Also, please make sure your members know about the Citizen Legion of Honor award luncheon on October 6th, 2016. The reception starts at 10:30AM and the luncheon at 11:30AM. Our recipient this year is Phil Parker, a past president of the Presidents Club and current CEO of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. You should have already received your tickets in the mail. We hope to see all our clubs there with at least eight members. We also want to make sure you get your banner to us in time so we can get it hung on the stage with the other banners. Let’s give Phil a huge show of support by having all of our banners hanging. Please drop them off to the chamber no later than October 3rd. Please call if you need extra tickets or have any questions about the luncheon. We will also be presenting a gift to everyone. You will definitely want to get your gift.

Please let us know of any upcoming activities your club has so we can get them listed for you. I have heard of some great ones coming up. Don’t forget the Duck Regatta for URS on September 13th. You

September, 2016 Newsletter can still get a “Quack Pack” by calling a member of the Civitan club. The winning ducks win some great prizes.

The Riverdale Optimist’s Acapulco luncheon and drawing is October 20th at 12:00 at the Masonic Temple. Tickets are $25 each. Every 5th ticket is a winner and over $900 in cash will be given away. Call me if you need a ticket. We will have them at the CLOH luncheon as well.

Congratulations to the Centerville Lions. They received a grant from Lions Club International and Anthem for a special volunteer day of service in November. Rumor has it they are going to do something nice to say thank you to their police and Sherriff dept. officers in their area.

The Ambucs will be having their annual Chili Cook-off on Friday, November 18th at 6:00PM at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. You can enjoy Chili from several area restaurants, games and gambling.

Remember to check out our speakers list on our website. We have recently updates it and there are some wonderful speakers to choose from. Also, lets us know if you would like someone from the Presidents club to come speak to your group. Some of us love to talk and would be happy to visit your club.

Have a great month. Look forward to seeing you all very soon.

The President’s Address:

Happy Holidays,

I cannot believe how fast this year flew by. It seems like we just wrapped up the 2015 holiday season yesterday, but here we are again. I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season and had a great year.

This was a busy year for us. We had such a wonderful time at the Volunteer appreciation breakfast in May. Who can forget watching Phil Parker receive the CLOH award in October? That was great to see him get this and all our scholarship winners receive their awards as well. I hope everyone is enjoying the book they received from us. Each club should have gotten one in the mail by now. Again, stop up and see the Kiosk on the third floor of the convention center.

We all realize it is a busy time of year, but hope you will be able to find the time to join us for our last meeting of the year for the Presidents Club. Our meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 21st at 11:30AM. As always, we will be at the Masonic Temple. Leslie has a great buffet planned for the day. Make sure you say thank you to all the staff at the Masonic Temple. They do such a great job. Did you know the café was open for lunch every Monday through Friday? You can go anytime you are in the area. You don’t have to wait for one of our meetings.

We have three great speakers lined up for this month. Robert Neff, a Master Gardner with the VA Grotto is going to come give us an update on what they have been doing over at the VA. If you have not been to see the Grotto in the spring or summer, you are really missing a beautiful site.

We also have Dave Howard with DPL. He is going to tell us all about all the great programs DPL has. Hopefully, he can give us all hints on how to save on our electric bills. Spencer and I just switched out our kitchen lights to more energy efficient ones. Dave is also a member of the West Carrollton Lions and the zone chair for Zone 2 of the OH6 Lions.

Nahseam Brown and Debbi are the third program. Nasheam is Registered Nurse and Exercise Physiologist for Kettering Health Network Community Outreach Program. She was recently diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, Cystoid Macular Edema, and cataracts. She is going to share her story with us and tell us about a new device for individuals with a vision impairment. Her service dog, Ragatta, will be joining her. Debbi is a therapist at the Kettering Low Vision Clinic. She and Nasheam will be talking about the orcam, a new device to assist individuals with blindness. .

You can see this is going to be a great meeting. Please plan on attending. Please bring your list of events to share so we know what you are doing. I love to attend events of other clubs. We helped out at the West Carrollton Lions pancake breakfast last month and attended the Miamisburg Rotary’s pancake breakfast this month.

Please invite us to speak about the Presidents Club at one of your meetings. Tony Massoud and I spoke at the Arabic club last month and had a great time. Talk about a wonderful club, these guys are the best.

Civitan Candy Wreath Sale when you buy a wreath you are helping URS Clients with disabilities and the Civitan Club for projects in the community.

Again, Happy Holidays. I hope it is a wonderful time for you, your families and your clubs. Hope to see you soon.
