4 Letter From the Executive Director

Welcome to The Music Hall, at the heart of Westchester since 1885!

Ever since I got involved with The Music Hall, I have wanted to offer our community a the- ater arts education program. And now, we are about to embark on a new adventure by starting The Music Hall Academy. The guiding motto of The Academy is “Art for Life” and our mission is to provide young people with valuable life skills developed through partici- pation in the theater arts. There will be workshops and events throughout the Spring, then Summer Camps and regular scheduled classes by Fall 2018. We are thrilled to have former Off-Broadway director and local theater educator Peter Royston at the helm for this en- deavor! Stay tuned… As a nonprofit organization, we stand or fall by the support we are able to inspire from our community. Whether you are involved with The Music Hall mostly as a patron, or if you are one of our 200+ amazing volunteers or a Music Hall member, sponsor or donor, or serve on our Board of Directors, you are part of keeping the music playing, THANK YOU! The love for our theater is really an inspiration. We strive every day to be worthy of the trust you place in us. And the decisions we make, we consider how it will benefit the future of our theater and our community. As you might imagine, restoring and caring for a 133-year-old building can be challenging. Rather than focus on the difficulties, I love this quote from a colleague of mine at The League of Historic American Theaters, “We have an historic theater ADVANTAGE!” And this is so true. There is something special about experiencing a show in an old space, saturated with memories of generations of theatergoers and artists. So many treasured theaters were lost in decades past, but show me a community that rallied to save theirs and I will show you a town with thriving stores, restaurants and coffee shops. Few things are better economic engines for a downtown area or a region than an active theater. Supporting your local theater is supporting a wonderful place to live, raise a family and locate your business. But primarily, a theater is a magical machine for larger than life experiences. We know our ancestors had become humans when they started painting on cave walls and made musical instruments. Later we began constructing whole buildings specifically to enjoy art together. It’s a pretty wondrous thing, if you think about it, something that binds all humans together. I hope you thoroughly enjoy the event that brought you here tonight. I look forward to welcoming you back to Tarrytown and The Music Hall again soon!

Enjoy the show! Björn Olsson, Executive Director

Collaboration. Cooperation. Teamwork. Creativity. Problem solving. These are just some of the valuable life skills our new Music Hall Academy will be sharing with young people through the magic of theater.

A former off-Broadway director, theater educator Peter Royston will oversee The Music Hall Academy as it introduces children in grades 2 through 12 to the excitement and learning opportunities in theater arts. Students will be exposed to writing plays and musicals, building sets, designing costumes, learning how to act, dance, and sing, using professional lighting and sound systems, exploring the business side of the performing arts as well as directing.

Under the marquee of theater arts, Royston and his staff of professional theater teachers and educators will apply proven teaching methods that will encourage students of all ages to practice empathy and collaboration as they bring fresh and innovating thinking and ideas in a group setting. In addition, Royston and his team will encourage personal confidence through creativity that can lead to success in many areas of a student’s life—both on and offstage.

From June 25-July 20, the Academy is offering a series of day- and week- long workshops exploring different aspects of the theater process. Themes include Stage Combat, Legends, Musical Theater, Theater Tech, Improv, and Modern Dance! And in August, the Academy will take on the Bard’s most magical play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in a three-week Shakespeare intensive.

“Thank you to our Stage Crew: Kevin Hunter, Angel Torres, Melissa Shawcross, Lucas Kane, and Justin Ramos” “Thank you to our Hospitality Assistants: Kelly Palmed and Mai Tran” 38 39 40 41 Board of Directors The Music Hall has an AMAZING board of directors! Our board members are our mentors, advisors and very generous supporters. They also ensure that our non- profit theater remains a servant of its community now and in the future.

Our board President Robert Clarfeld’s commitment is unsurpassed. He has donated time, expertise, and financial support which enabled The Music Hall to secure a renewed mortgage on our crucial “annex building.” This property was needed not just for parking but also to be able to park tour buses and equipment trucks off the street. The effort was achieved after a LOT of negotiations, discussions, twists and turns. Board member Whitney Singleton put in his time and professional expertise, handling the legal side, including the closing on the new loan, provided by long time Music Hall supporter M&T Bank. We cannot overstate the importance of having access to this property and being able to secure it for the future was a big “exhale” for all of us.

Then, at Christmas time, our board Treasurer Kent Sheng surprised us with an in- credible gift of a Steinway Model D Concert Grand. This piano is a true legacy gift that will thrill artists and patrons alike for decades to come!

The Music Hall Board has tremendous people that are committed to the performing arts in our community and to the success of our landmark theater.

We thank them for their service, we have the best friends!
