A manoeuvre exercise of Bangladesh Army titled “Operation Baghrothaba” was held at Swarna Dweep alias Jahaijjar Char in Noakhali on Sunday. The exercise was organised under the management of the 52 Brigade Group of 17 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. Brigadier General Kaiser Malik led the exercise. Besides infantry, armouredand artillery forces, all other arms services also participated in the exercise. In the exercise, many modern weapons and equipment were also used. The 1st Para-Commando Battalion Paratrooper of Ad Hoc Para Commando Brigade, Army Aviation Group, and provided important assistance in this exercise. As a part of the exercise, army members practised different manoeuvre and tactics. Major General Md Rashed Amin, GOC, 33 Infantry Division and Area Commander, Comilla Area, Major General Shameem Uz Zaman, GOC, 17 Infantry Division of Jalalabad Syhlet District and Commander of Chittagong Naval Area Rear Admiral M Abu Ashraf were present on the occasion among others. The main objective of the exercise is to assess and evaluate the operational capability of Bangladesh Army to safeguard the country’s sovereignty. The island popularly known as the Jahaijjar Char under Noakhali district surfaced in 1978. It is situated in Meghna estuary and close to Bay of Bengal. Situated over a three-meter height from the sea level, the island is now 28 kilometre long and 14 kilometre wide in area. It lies about 4 km to the south of the Noakhali district mainland and nearly 4.5 km west and about 13.5 km north-east of Hatiya. Initially, it was named ‘Island Ruhulamin’, but subsequently came to be known as Jahaijjar Island. The inaccessible island had long been used by the organised miscreants and pirates as their safe haven, disrupting the activities of the civil administration. From 2014, Bangladesh Army conducted a large-scale troop exercise on the Island. There is a plan to set up a full-fledged exercise and training centre there. The training support facilities being built is expected to raise the Army’s professional efficiency. On January 7 in 2016, Bangladesh Army conducted its winter exercise on the island, attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina inaugurated a multipurpose cyclone shelter centre at the island.
