4.A. Title: Recommendations of the Nominations Committee Board Member: Professor Will Pope, Chair of Nominations Committee Author: Debbi Newstead, Executive Manager Date: 30 June 2020 Version: 1.0 Circulation: Directors – 16 July 2020 Status: Published Issue The Nominations Committee held a virtual meeting on 29 June 2020 to consider the appointment of the two student nominee Directors with a view to making recommendations to the Board. The minutes of that meeting can be found as paper 7.D. Dan Goulborn took over as elected President of the University of Suffolk Students’ Union, and Mauro Cardoso as Vice-President, on 1 July 2020. The Board has previously approved that the President should automatically be eligible for nomination to the Board, whilst the Vice-President might be considered as the second student nominee. Recommendation The Board is invited to approve the recommendations of the appointments of Dan Goulborn and Mauro Cardoso to the Board which was unanimously approved by the Nominations Committee, for the duration of their tenures as President and Vice-President of the University of Suffolk Students’ Union. The President of the Students’ Union has held a directorship on the University of Suffolk Board since it became independent in 2016. Following governance advice from the OfS and Advance HE, the Board agreed last year that there should be a second student nominee on the Board. This was put in place in the Autumn and the role was taken up by the then Vice-President. At the time of approval both the Nominations Committee and the Board agreed that, as set out in the Board’s terms of reference, the President of the Students’ Union should automatically be nominated to become a director, whereas there was more flexibility around the second nominee. The Board acknowledged, however, that the advantages of nominating the Vice-President were as follows: • they have been elected by the student body to represent the student voice; • they have training as Student Officers which helps them to understand governance structures, trustee roles and responsibilities, confidentiality, etc; • they have an understanding of the University’s portfolio, staffing and structure enabling them to contribute to the University Board and support informed decision making; • as sabbatical officers they are paid a salary for their fulltime role which means that the demands of board membership are more reasonable than for students undertaking the role in a voluntary capacity. It is felt that the experience of nominating the Vice-President in 2019/20 has been a very positive one. It is therefore proposed that the same approach is taken for the second student nominee this year. The terms of office as directors for both President and Vice-President would be concurrent with that of their tenure with the Students’ Union. Please find attached CVs for both Dan Goulborn and Mauro Cardoso. Daniel Goulborn – Curriculum Vitae Ipswich IP3 [email protected] - 07588 889473 I am a hard worker and I like to see a job completed. I can work in a high-pressure situation individually, or alongside others in a team. I enjoy interacting and communicating with customers and members of a team because it allows me to express my friendly and positive personality. People often view me as competitive, however I use this to my advantage by completing every task I am given to the highest possible standard. I aim to impress others with my work ethic, punctuality, organisation and professionalism. My aspiration is to complete university and gain a teaching qualification to teach new generations in the same way I have been. I feel I have gained valuable experience in relevant sectors to make me an ideal candidate. EMPLOYMENT HISTORY Front of House Assistant University of Suffolk Students’ Union – Ipswich September 2019 to Present At UoS Students’ Union, I work as a shop assistant, as well as acting as a first point of call for students seeking advice. The Students’ Union is not easy to find, so it is my job to make them visible and have an open presence in the building. My main duties here are stock rotation of dry, fresh and clothing stock in the SU shop, as well as acting as a receptionist and student advisor for the Students’ Union. We provide an efficient service, with enthusiasm and initiative, working as part of the wider SU team, as well as independently in the shop. Cover Supervisor Café Jungle at Urban Jungle – Norwich & Beccles July 2017 to August 2018 At Café Jungle, my role was initially as temporary café waiting staff for summer work. As I progressed, I was handed greater responsibility and was trained at the café workstations, such as food production or making drinks. Upon opening a new site in Suffolk, I was asked to pick up shifts at the new site, and as I became more experienced, my skills grew and I was asked to take on new duties such as opening and closing procedures both in the café, the kitchen, as well as team management if necessary across the two company sites. By the time I moved away to university, I was able to run the cafe effectively and without supervision. I was also able to take over for kitchen work when necessary, which has made me confident that I have a wide set of skills that I am able to bring to new employment. Chef and Duty Manager Patisserie Valerie – Ipswich September 2017 to December 2017 At Patisserie Valerie, my role was primarily as a chef, with cover shifts on Front of House as the duty manager. I worked in a high pressure, professional food environment, on my own and in a small team. As a chef, I was required to co-ordinate my work with that of the Front of House staff, and other chefs in the kitchen, using my strong verbal communication skills. I was also needed to use my initiative to make decisions on requirements for the coming days. Patisserie Valerie is a company that asks a lot of its staff, and I received excellent training to ensure I can carry out a wide range of tasks to a high professional standard. Patisserie Valerie has benefited me because I am now more confident in my management abilities, personally and professionally. I have also gained more experience of a food environment, while developing my inter-personal skills and my ability to work in a team, including verbal communication, organisation, and decision-making. Deputy President City College Norwich Students' Union – Norwich July 2016 to June 2017 At the Students' Union, I was led the Student Executive Team and co-ordinating their activities, such as clubs, societies, and events. Alongside this, I had a mandate to represent and support all students at the College, where I did so at the National Union of Students Conference in Brighton 2017, meaning I could gain experience of leading, and using individual initiative. A key area of the role of Deputy was regulating the expenditure of the SU, and holding a record of petty cash transactions, as well as presenting a report of expenditure to our governing body, the Student Parliament. I was also required to provide and allocate grants to our clubs and societies, and monitor their expenses. This involved ensuring all financial transactions are legitimate, keeping and recording the necessary paperwork and receipts for those transactions and proving I am a trusted signatory of the SU accounts and capable of managing teams' expenditure. Another focus of my work at the SU was how I speak to our customers (the students at the College) and external parties, such as businesses, charities and other organisations including local and national government representatives. In this focus, I organised a Fresher's Fair for the College over two days to ensure the students at the College felt welcomed in the College environment. This is an essential skill to have while working with customers and other businesses, as it requires good interpersonal and organisational skills. I am also adept at dealing with customer complaints, as much of my role was to support students in academic appeals and complaints, and arbitrate between students and the College. I was also privy to much of the College's Disciplinary procedure for students, showing I can find a balance between staff and students at the College, staying neutral and fair throughout. Additional requirements in my role included maintaining SU Internet presence, giving me some experience in website design, and proficiency in managing social media platforms. I was also required to organise and carry out training programs for our course representatives and the Student Executive, proving I am organised and able to lead effectively. Alongside the President, I attended meetings with departmental heads, and the College Executive Managers, giving insight to the student opinion. This shows I can work at a managerial level if necessary.
