CRITICAL THEORY and AUTHORITARIAN POPULISM Critical Theory and Authoritarian Populism
CDSMS EDITED BY JEREMIAH MORELOCK CRITICAL THEORY AND AUTHORITARIAN POPULISM Critical Theory and Authoritarian Populism edited by Jeremiah Morelock Critical, Digital and Social Media Studies Series Editor: Christian Fuchs The peer-reviewed book series edited by Christian Fuchs publishes books that critically study the role of the internet and digital and social media in society. Titles analyse how power structures, digital capitalism, ideology and social struggles shape and are shaped by digital and social media. They use and develop critical theory discussing the political relevance and implications of studied topics. The series is a theoretical forum for in- ternet and social media research for books using methods and theories that challenge digital positivism; it also seeks to explore digital media ethics grounded in critical social theories and philosophy. They include: • Analysis of film form including: o Aesthetic o Narrative • Exploration of a film’s context including: o Social o Political o Cultural o Historical o Institutional To support your work through this booklet, you will need to access the short film The Fall by Jonathon Glazer (2019). At the time of writing, it is hosted by the BBC on their iPlayer and should be available for another 5 months. It is likely to be freely available via other on-line hosts. Just search for ‘The Fall Jonathan Glazer’. Before you watch the film, please read this extract from a newspaper article about its unusual release. The Americas with Simon Reeve is an amiable travelogue in which a dishy documentarian gads about the US. This Sunday night he was in California, examining giant redwoods and Beyoncé’s mansion. At 10pm, the credits rolled and, abruptly, BBC Two plunged us into hell. For five minutes before the start of Live at the Apollo, the channel screened a new short film in which a masked mob hang a man in a forest. -

We Understand That the U.S. Department of Labor Announced a Proposed Rule That Would “Update and Clarify” the Department of Labor’S Investment Duties Regulation
July 26, 2020 Office of Regulations and Interpretations Employee Benefits Security Administration, Room N-5655, U.S. Department of Labor 200 Constitution Avenue NW Washington, DC 20210 Attention: Financial Factors in Selecting Plan Investments Proposed Regulation. Document Citation: 85 FR 39113 Page: 39113-39128 (16 pages) CFR: 29 CFR 2550 RIN: 1210-AB95 Document Number: 2020-13705 Dear Sir/Madam: We understand that the U.S. Department of Labor announced a proposed rule that would “update and clarify” the Department of Labor’s investment duties regulation. According to the news release issued announcing this proposed rule, “Private employer-sponsored retirement plans are not vehicles for furthering social goals or policy objectives that are not in the financial interest of the plan,” said Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia. “Rather, ERISA plans should be managed with unwavering focus on a single, very important social goal: providing for the retirement security of American workers.” We are writing to provide comments on this proposed rule. Background The core idea behind the work of William Michael Cunningham at Creative Investment Research is the recognition that mainstream market-based solutions do not maximize social return. This leads to an underappreciation for the value of human life. We develop market-based innovations to counter this. The elevation of “Chicago-school” economic theories has led to a focus on celebrity and money worship. These magnify and worsen the misallocation of economic resources identified above. Our development of social return investment technologies and the subsequent rise of social entrepreneurs are the methods we have used in this effort. We have radically augmented the development of new investment theories that are the key, we believe, to a higher level of human development. -

According to Pew Research, ENDORSEMENTS among others, there is great hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population. Most recently, a poll from the Center for Security ADS Policy released data showing "25% of those polled agreed that violence against Americans here in the United States is justified as a part of the global jihad" and 51% of those polled, "agreed that Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to Shariah." Shariah authorizes such atrocities as murder against non-believers who won't convert, beheadings and more unthinkable acts ARCHIVE that pose great harm to Americans, especially women. Mr. Trump stated, "Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to NOVEMBER 2016 anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and OCTOBER 2016 why we will have to determine. 1 MADELEINE ALBRIGHT: FASCISM a Warning the Former Secretary Of
MADELEINE ALBRIGHT: FASCISM a Warning The former secretary of state Madeleine Albright recently issued a book titled: Fascism a Warning Having in mind the title of the book, I expected a text that would be a serious, scientific contribution to the deeper study of the causes of the origin, development and consequences of the social pathological phenomena called Fascism. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the essence of the book is everything else but that. The text is burdened with political zealous which substantially limits cognitive domains, methodological consistency and scientific equilibrium of author’s work, so it largely contains elements of a political pamphlet. In summary, one can say, book is not intended to study fascism, mentioning Mussolini, Hitler and the other characters that are associated with various forms of totalitarianism are only a collateral damage compared to the main target. When all the veils are removed the target becomes completely clear and it is the president of United States Donald Trump. At the very beginning the author raises the question (p. 4) …“why, this far into the twenty-first century, are we once again talking about Fascism? One reason, frankly, is Donald Trump. If we think of Fascism as a wound from the past that had almost healed, putting Trump in the White House was like ripping of the bandage and picking at the scab”. For her Trump, almost never did she write the president, (p. 5): “systematically degraded political discourse in the United States, sown an astonishing disregard for facts, libeled his predecessors, threatened to ‘lock up’ political rivals, referred to mainstream journalists as ‘the enemy of the American people’, spread falsehoods about the integrity of the U.S. -
Quarantined! Examining the Effects of a Community-Wide Moderation Intervention on Reddit
Quarantined! Examining the Effects of a Community-Wide Moderation Intervention on Reddit ESHWAR CHANDRASEKHARAN∗, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA SHAGUN JHAVER∗, Rutgers University, USA AMY BRUCKMAN, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA ERIC GILBERT, University of Michigan, USA Should social media platforms intervene when communities repeatedly break rules? What actions can they consider? In light of this hotly debated issue, platforms have begun experimenting with softer alternatives to outright bans. We examine one such intervention called quarantining, that impedes direct access to and promotion of controversial communities. Specifically, we present two case studies of what happened when Reddit quarantined the influential communities r/TheRedPill (TRP) and r/The_Donald (TD). Working with over 85M Reddit posts, we apply causal inference methods to examine the quarantine’s effects on TRP and TD. We find that the quarantine made it more difficult to recruit new members: new user influx to TRP and TD decreased by 79.5% and 58%, respectively. Despite quarantining, existing users’ misogyny and racism levels remained unaffected. We conclude by reflecting on the effectiveness of this design friction in limiting the influence of toxic communities and discuss broader implications for content moderation. Additional Key Words and Phrases: content moderation; causal inference; design friction; graduated sanctions 1 INTRODUCTION Over the past few years, many scholars and activists have persistently called for social media platforms to remove content that promotes coded racism, misogyny, and conspiracy theories [83]. At the same time, there is a growing recognition that platforms need to better facilitate critical discussions on sensitive social issues like race, masculinity and immigration.
