Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week we celebrate the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls. An extra evening Mass will be provided, so that you will be able to participate in the Mass on these days. The month of November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory. We believe that our prayers and sacrifices assist those who have died in need of further purification before they can enter into Fr. Paul Schmidt the joy of heaven. We place their names on the altar during the entire month, so that we will

remember to pray for them. This practice can serve to introduce the Mass topic of this week,

the Preparation Rites, also called the .

During this part of the Mass, we prepare the altar for the celebration of the Liturgy of the . The gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar; these will become the Body and Blood of Christ during the Eucharistic Prayer. These gifts stand for us. We place ourselves on the altar as gifts to God. All that we have done during the week, all our joys and sorrows, our work and recreation, our hopes and disappointments we bring to the Lord.

The collection accompanies our gifts of bread and wine. It represents our intention

to share in the Sacrifice of the Mass and the ministry of the Church. It means that we want

fully to share in the Eucharist. In effect, it says that we are laying ourselves on the altar, to

The

be offered to the Father with . By placing our lists of Faithful Departed on the altar, we

indicate that we are presenting our beloved dead to God in union with Christ’s sacrifice.

An Offertory Psalm of hymn accompanies this rite. It reminds us that we are part of

Offertory

a community of faith. We are members of God’s holy Church. (The word “holy” is restored

to the translation of the invitation to the priest’s Prayer over the Gifts.) We give back to God from the many gifts God has given to us. The collection is a sign of the gift of our time and our talent, as well as our livelihood. All that we have comes from God. We offer it back to God in gratitude and joy. Sometimes, at special times, such as a funeral, the Presentation of Gifts includes items representing the theme of the day or the life of the deceased. These special Offertory processions remind us that our whole lives are touched by God. We are encouraged to extend this offering to every day, through the Morning Offering. “O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, and for the intentions of our Holy Father, the Pope.” God leaves nothing out in lavishing us with gifts. We should leave nothing out in giving back to God from the gifts we have received. The Rite of the Preparation of the Gifts, then, can form a pattern of sacrificial, Eucharistic giving for our lives, our generosity striving to match the goodness of God, who is never outdone in generosity. By participating actively in this part of the Mass, we prepare for the sacramental offering which Jesus will bring into our midst in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We are ready to enter into Jesus’ offering of himself to the Father, the perfect sacrifice he offers for all eternity as Great High Priest. We are ready to enter into the Sacred Mystery.

Your Pastor,

Father Paul Schmidt
