Cartography of Main Geosite DESCRIPTION

In this landscape area outcrop all the carbonatic formations of Albuno Cervati Pollino Unit from the Tri- assic to the Middle Miocene. Within Cervati Mountain 24 individuals geosites were surveyed, two of which consist mainly by river Karst canyon of Laurin and Piaggine, such classic and educational exam- ples of the superimposed canyons. These geosites can be interpreted like valleys produced by the inter- play of fluvial and karst processes (in the past 2 Millions years ago), and characterized by various types of evolution and development (with abandoned valleys or upstream side). In general, most surveyed geo- sites are the result of epigean and hypogean karst processes: gorges and the dry valley of Laurino; nu- merous sinkholes and / or caves, springs related to karst systems. It is important indicate the sinkhole of Vallivona (deep 70 metres) and in conjunction with the Gorge of Hell; the cave of Vesalo (deep 300 me- tres) with a well of access wide 70 metres, typical sinkhole from active contact; the sinkhole Vallicelli that represents an example karst sinkhole by fossil contact, with important Mousterian lithic industries of about 40,000 years ago (the only site in Campania of 1000 metres below sea level) and then attended the Iron Age and the Bronze Age (5000-3000 years ago); the springs “Fistole del Faraone”, one of the most important springs of Cervati Mountain; numerous karst plateau of Cervati Mountain. Moreover, we can, also, mention some morphologic, stratigraphic and structural singularity, like the gla- cial wreck cirque of Cervati Mountain and moraine deposits of the last glaciation (about 18.000 years ago) associated with it; the overlap between units of the Flysch and units of carbonate platform in ; breaches of the Festole Caccialupi; the structure of “Raia del Pedale” with passage Creta- ceous / Paleocene on the side of layer linked to the uplift Plio-Quaternary (3-2 Millions years ago).
