Concrete is the most widely used material on Earth apart from water and, globally, the cement industry produces about 5 per cent of man- made CO2 emissions. At the Annual Concrete Seminar in Hong Kong in February 2009, Gammon showed that the Grade 100Mpa concrete used at One Island East has 5,880 kg CO2/tonne less (11% less) than traditional grade concrete. The high strength means less concrete and rebar were used, along with less transportation. All of these contribute to a lower-carbon building.

Innovative material solutions On a number of projects, Gammon is applying a technology called Building Information Management (BIM). This is a process of generating and managing building data, and uses a three-dimensional, real-time building modelling software to increase productivity and allow visualisation in building design and construction, which facilitates communication between the various project stakeholders. It involved excavating 600,000 cubic metres of rocks and sand, equivalent to 240 Olympic-sized swimming pools, as well as the installation and removal on completion of 26 kilometres of steel piles and 7,000 tonnes of steel structures.
