PROFILE HIGHLIGHTS

1. Dr Paul Odula is a Senior lecturer, who is a holder of a PhD since 2015. He has over 30 years’ experience of doing research and teaching in the School of Medicine. He has done this for the past 8 years as a Senior Lecturer. He is also a senior consultant surgeon with over 20 years’ experience. He is conversant and approaching competence in new technologies such as Laparoscopy and Laser surgery. He has over 48 endorsements for his skills. 2. He became the first surgeon in Kenya to register for a PhD degree in Human Anatomy in 2010. In 2012, He successfully applied for a Deans committee research grant for his PhD. He defended his thesis and graduated in 2015. 3. He has taught Human Anatomy at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in 4 different medical schools, in 3 African countries. He has since been recognized and appointed external examiner in 3 different medical schools in the past 5 years. 4. In 1993, he was requested by the Director of Medical Services, at that time, to do internship at District Hospital so that he may initiate and implement dissection as a teaching method of anatomy at the Moi University. At Moi University, he acquired skills in teaching problem-based learning and curriculum development. On his return to the , he used these skills to spear head the use of problem-based learning method as a way of making tutorial sessions more interactive and more informative. 5. At University of Nairobi, Dr Odula became part of the team of staff that succeeded in jumpstarting the BSc intercalated honors program in 2004 and then later MSc anatomy degree program in 2007. He has supervised 2 MSc student to completion and is currently supervising 4 PhD students. 6. On the research front, Dr Odula has authored 44 peer reviewed articles, published in reputable regional and international journals. These articles have been reported to have over 7,400 reads and 256 citations to date. Researchgate.net has recognized Dr Odula severally in the past 5 years, as ‘the most read author of the department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi’. Dr Odula is a member of Editorial Board/ Advisors for ‘The Annals of African Surgery and is actively involved in ongoing research projects with regards to surgical anatomy and connective tissue research. His special interests also include variant anatomy and proctology. 7. In recognition of his administrative abilities, Dr Odula was recently commended by the SWA (Student Welfare Authority) management board for posting an impressive 1st quarter performance for KMSH (A strategic management unit of SWA).

PERSONAL CAREER TARGETS

1. Encourage and supervise my colleagues to pursue a higher degree in anatomy. 2. Ensure effective and efficient teaching of the current large number of students- a. Encourage innovation in topographic anatomy and more use of the Nairobi Surgical Skills Center. b. Intensify mentoring as part of confidence building for the students until it becomes a routine in the department. 3. Improve on inter-departmental and inter-university collaborative research. This will improve networking for training purposes also. 4. To actively collaborate and engage with my colleagues to write proposals for funding so as to improve innovation and training in the department. 5. To enroll at least a Phd student and one MSc student every year to work in my area specialization 6. Achieve competence surgical skills involving laparoscopy and laser surgery.

VOLUNTEER WORK/ COMMUNITY OUTREACH AS A SENIOR LECTURER

2019 Participated in a seminar for boys in high school dubbed ‘Career Hub’. Had an interactive discussion with the boys on a possible career as a doctor. This was part of the ‘Moran project’, an annual high school activity organized by Dhahabu Themanini Family Centre, for training in character and leadership towards manliness. 2019 A wellness camp held on 5th and 6th September, at the Automobile Association Kenya at Embakasi organized by Marina Healthcare and other partners. 2019 A wellness camp held on 6th July, to a Teachers training College at the Blessed Sacrament in Buruburu. This was organized by Pacis Insurance, Marina Healthcare and other partners. Gave a talk on Gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. 2018 Hernia surgical camp under the auspices of ‘Hernia society of Kenya’ held at Meru Teaching and Referral hospital. The theme was “Effective management of hernias”. 2017 Part of the Avenue healthcare team that coordinated medical support for runners at the Standard chartered marathon held in October. 2015 A medical camp held on 7th March, at the Ongata Rongai organized by Avenue Healthcare and other partners.
