Los Angeles Sparks: Candace Parker Finally Has Her WNBA Championship Los Angeles Sparks: Candace Parker finally has her WNBA championship Author : Robert D. Cobb Every superstar had to go through it at some point in their career. LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning, and Derek Jeter, just to name a few. You know, the athletes that are larger than life, the ones that know when stepping on that court or field they are better than everyone else, but.. They need help. It has taken Candace Parker 9 seasons to figure out that she alone will not win a WNBA Championship. If you watch Parker play you know she can score 30 points any given game and she has tried for the majority of her career but 2016 was about team. Maybe someone sat her down or maybe it was the constant disappointment season after season of being so close, yet so far away. The WNBA has a wealth of talent spread across the league unlike the NBA where superstars are found in the same lineup where players may feel the added pressure of having to do too much every night. Parker entered the league with much fanfare, she was to be the savior when Lisa Leslie retired but it just hasn't gone her way. Parker's been dealing with the James issue, great players but will she ever do enough to win a title? Much like LeBron, it wasn't a matter of doing enough, it was a point of doing less. When you have the complete package as she does, it's easy to look at the competition and feel as if no one can stop you and for the majority of her career that's how she felt. Parker was groomed for the Los Angeles throne right next to Kobe but the playoffs have not been nice to her. [embedit snippet="2"] Parker has led the Los Angeles Sparks to six trips to the WNBA playoffs and each time she and the team has come up short, so what was the difference this year? Parker. There's no need to average 20 points on a nightly basis, she has help, has finally learned to trust and how can we argue with the results? The Sparks had the talent to win, it was just getting the execution down. Parker is the leader still, but Nneka Ogwumike has stepped into the role of lead scorer with her 71 percent shooting. Alana Beard has made huge baskets and provided defense but the steady play of Kristi Toliver and the bench scoring of Jantel Lavender have allowed Parker to play worry-free basketball. This is not last season or the seasons before. The Sparks were focused from the beginning to the end of the season. What they were able to accomplish this season was remarkable. Often teams have the moniker of "Championship or bust" but for the Sparks it held true. Now, Parker can place her name and team banner in 1 / 2 the rafters with Magic Johnson, Kobe and her mentor, Lisa Leslie. She is now a WNBA champion.     Duke University's Alana Bears Named WBCA/NCAA Division I Player of the Month ATLANTA, Ga. (January 13, 2004) -- Duke University senior guard Alana Beard has been named the first Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division I Player of the Month for December, WBCA CEO, Beth Bass announced today. The WBCA reintroduces its player of the month program after several years of hiatus. The WBCA will announce a player of the month throughout the college women's basketball season for the months of December, January, February, and March. Beard, a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, averaged 18.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 4.0 steals and 1.2 blocked shots, and opened conference play and the month of December with a win against Wake Forest (Dec. 5). December also marked a homecoming for Beard, who returned to her native town to take on Northwestern State on December 20. The trip home proved to be a pleasant one as the Blue Devils were victorious over the Lady Demons 105-53, with a healthy contribution from Beard, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Beard also tied her career high seven steals with a 90-59 win over Hampton on December 28. To close out the month and 2003, Beard led the Blue Devils past Loyola Marymount 81-53 with a 19-point performance. Duke is currently on a 13-game winning streak, achieving their 500th win in the program's 29 seasons with their most recent victory over the University of North Carolina 79-57 on January 11 and a huge win over the reigning NCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Champions, University of Connecticut on January 3.

    Ohio State’s Dorka Juhasz Named To WBCA All-Region Team Ohio State sophomore forward Dorka Juhasz has earned even more recognition, this time from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Juhasz was one of 52 players recognized on the WBCA All-Region Teams, which will dwindle its list down to 10 players for an overall All-America Team on April 2. There are 10 players in Juhasz’s region, which includes eight total players from the Big Ten: Grace Berger (Indiana), Kaila Charles (Maryland), Kathleen Doyle (Iowa), Arella Guirantes (Rutgers), Juhasz, Naz Hillmon (Michigan), Ali Patberg (Indiana) and Lindsey Pulliam (Northwestern). The other two players in the region are Becca Hittner out of Drake and Chante Stonewall out of DePaul. The second-year forward led the Buckeyes with 13.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game while shooting 47.6 percent (160 of 336) from the field and 39.6 percent (40 of 101) from three. The impressive stats were enough to get Juhasz on the First-Team All-Big Ten lineup, the only Ohio State player on the first or second team. After averaging a double-double in the four games in Indianapolis, Juhasz was also named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team along with Hillmon, Patberg and Maryland’s Ashley Owusu and Stephanie Jones. Juhasz is looking to become the first Ohio State player to make the WBCA First Team since Kelsey Mitchell, who made it three times from 2016-18.
