Toby Ayling District Council 1 E Pallant Chichester PO19 1TY

Dear Toby,

First of all, thank you for your letter dated 30/11/20. As a means of an introduction, I am the new clerk of Apuldram.

Having read the letter in detail, I wanted to voice the strong concerns for the parish regarding the development and current issues in the area. Whilst I follow there is no formal development for Apuldram, I think it is important to expect an increase in traffic flow coming into the parish (and the increase in speeding through the villages) if developments in nearby towns and parishes goes ahead. However, I also understand the need for development in the area and the reason why it is being planned for.

Our major issue with both the COVID-19 lockdown and increase in the nearby population is that towards Dell Quay, we have a severe issue with dangerous parking, traffic build-up and speeding.

As the new clerk, I want to ensure that the resident’s thoughts and feelings are involved as much as possible and in doing so I wanted to recommend some solutions to this issue.

Firstly, the installation of double yellow lines around some of the most dangerous ‘parking spots’ especially near the cycle lane where people unload their bikes. This solution is low in cost and fairly attainable.

Following on from that, traffic calming measures could be introduced within the parish. Such measures such as controlled planting pocket parks, the use of large planters and road markings could be installed in order to reduce this issue.

The other issue should be of upmost consideration, especially due to the nature of its severity and frequency. The most complained about roads by residents are; Apuldram Lane, Road and Dell Quay with regards to speeding, anti-social driving and the use of these roads for ‘rat-runs’. Dell Quay currently has a 60-mph limit, which some road-user see as a target causing collisions and near misses. The road is often crossed by families using the cycle lane in the summer time and I would hate to see a collision involving a car and a cyclist. The reduction in this speed limit could be vital.

Although we have the use of SID, I do think additional measures should be taken. This could include a traffic patrol completed regularly by the local police and PCSO’s, the introduction of additional signage or a District backed community project in order to reduce speed.

I would be very interested to know the Districts opinion or any other comments and/or solutions. Please let me know if you wish for me to further clarify any of the points?

Very kind regards,
