It is our venue to learn and share NOTE CHANGE more. One of the joys of a group such as this is that we are all here because of a shared love and admiration for the beauty of a well formed letter and what it can do to a poem, a prayer, or a simple certificate. Calligraphy is a “civilization maker,” a small piece of civilizing and upgrading a written word. Annual Meeting Even, and perhaps, especially, in this age of the Mac and PC, we “flourish”! The beauty of calligraphy is appreciated by all who come into contact with and Election of any well-done piece, be it a beginner’s or a professional’s. Officers Part of the mission statement of our Guild is to bring, to educate, and to Saturday, May 12 share our love and knowledge among and beyond our membership. Many pm pm of us teach in our communities, we exhibit our pieces in local galleries, and 7 – 9 we incessantly and gladly talk about this beloved mystic art of putting pen The Nominating Committee has to paper, sitting back and enjoying what we put on that paper, or, seldom, submitted the following slate: hopefully, crumbling up draft #6 in hopes of #7 coming out how we President Pamn Klinedinst envisioned it could! Visit our website at www.calligraphersguild.org — 2 — Upcoming Spring Workshops If you are unsure about signing up for the Guild's spring workshops, please give some careful consideration to the two internationally known teachers we have coming in April. If you have any doubts about your ability and want some conversation with Chris Tischer, please call her 301-745-4633 or email . The upcoming workshops (April 14-15 and April 16-20) with Denis Brown offer a great opportunity to study with this Irish “Swordsman.” We are fortunate to have him coming for a five-day class that should be very inspiring and innovative. All of us will benefit from the many experiments that make Denis so fun to be with. He has entertained and educated his audiences and students with fresh ideas, new techniques and energetic letterforms, always correctly based on the traditional standards of his training at Roehampton Institute in the UK. As was said in the Workshops Bulletin, don’t be afraid to take his classes. He shows you things that you will perhaps not master in one sitting, but that will influence how you think about and practice your letters from that on. His wit and talent are charming and available to all his students. Take a look at his web site and see the results of his creativity. You will be blown away by the layered glass that has been etched, tooled and colored to achieve a translucency you can't imagine. The weekend class will have surprises for your papers that you will keep for years waiting for the right card, project, or poem to finish the beautiful gilding with copper and brass. Denis has taught all over the world, bringing his own brand of enthusiasm to the calligraphic world. Now he is in our world and we welcome him. Let’s have a good turn-out for his classes. Make a decision to join us for these days of challenge and growth. Register now. We still have spaces left in the class with Yves Leterme from Bruges, Belgium (May 12–13). Yves will be coming to us straight from Camp Cheerio where he will have been teaching for a week. His energy comes from his harnessing the ways to make gestural letters. There is a trick to it and you will learn what that is. He has mastered the concepts and discovered the exercises for you to see how to move the hand, arm, body to make each word alive with feeling.

Dear Shane, I am delighted to add to my enthusiastic assessment of your workshop last Saturday. Here goes. I am a senior citizen who has been involved with calligraphy for years, all without any instruction ever. I also have belonged to the Guild since coming to Washington. Thinking it was time for some instruction, I signed up for Shane Perry’s workshop. What a wonderful experience! Shane is so professional and a great teacher. He was sensitive to the needs of each student and called each by name as he guided the students in the rudiments of the foundational hand. The Zapf 2012 Scholarships supplies were very special---a board on which to work, pen holder and nib, tiny jar of ink, a t-square, and plenty of paper. The correct deadline for the Spring/Summer Zapf We just set up shop straight away. Scholarship submissions is July 9, 2012. (A previous Bulletin incorrectly listed it as June 9). This is open to all Shane is so in love with his craft, his enthusiasm is infectious, WCG members who have been a part of the membership and serves as a lively and gentle impulse to this demanding for at least a year.
