LIVE AUCTION ITEMS

#1 Napa Special: Dunn and Kenwood 2002 Kenwood Artist Series, Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5 Liter The 2002 vintage is the 28th Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon from Kenwood. This Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma Valley's Mayacamas range is a rich, concentrated wine with aromas of red currants, black cherries, and plums followed by aromatic notes of French oak, spice and black licorice. This Artist Series was bottle aged before release making it very drinkable now but it should continue to improve for at least another decade.

2002 Dunn Vineyards-Howell Mountain, Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5 Liter The 2002 is a seductive Cabernet Sauvignon with vibrant acidity. A primary style of red wine entering its adolescence. A beautifully balanced wine, which boasts fleshiness and lots of structural support to hold it all in. Many assessors can still appreciate this wine for several minutes after tasting. A wine that will offer many years of pleasure to those who are patient.

Opening bid: $400 Generously donated by Erik and Judy Johnson

#2 Gent Jazz Festival – Ghent, Belgium • Four days VIP passes for two • Three night’s hotel accommodations for two at the Sandton Grand Hotel Reylof, the official festival hotel Ghent’s mid-summer international Jazz Fest attracts top names in jazz – 2015’s July festival featured Charles Lloyd, Gregory Porter, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga along with and Rodrigo y Gabriela to name just a few. The VIP packages include buffet dinner, top shelf beverages, secure parking and reserved VIP seats in the concert venues.

1 The stunningly beautiful and historic city of Ghent has been designated by UNESCO as a “Creative City of Music” and called by Lonely Planet as “the best kept secret in Europe.” Walking through the city is like walking through a historical painting filled with architectural masterpieces, such as a world-renowned cathedral, stained glass-filled churches, steeply gabled merchant houses and a 12th-century castle. And then there are historical paintings themselves, like Jan and Hubert van Eyck’s famous Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, better known as the Ghent Altarpiece of 1432, which ranks among the most significant works of art in Europe.

For more “common” pleasures, take a leisurely canal cruise around the town, relax in a chocolate shop, get creative on Werregarrenstraat (Graffiti Street) or grab a Belgian beer in a quirky bar or historic tavern.

Opening bid: $1,800 Generously donated by Bertrand Flamang, Executive Director, Gent Jazz Festival

Paired with food by one of Santa Cruz’s top chefs, we’re calling this party Ted’s Excellent Wine Adventure, because wine collector and host (and former KJ Board President and serious jazz fan) Ted Kirkiles has decided that it’s time to open the bottles and share them with a lucky high bidder and his or her best friends.

3 A word on the wines --Joseph Phelps Vineyards has enjoyed four decades as a high water mark for reds. As Robert Parker wrote, “The Insignia cuvée has been one of Napa’s great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines since its inception in 1974;” and Wine Spectator observed that Phelps is “one of Napa Valley’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon producers.” This party will be a high water mark in your social calendar – the wines are virtually unavailable and valued at over $3,500. Each wine will be carefully paired with a special course prepared by top chef Gema Cruz of Gabriella Café in Santa Cruz.
