The cake was made for the occasion by Dianne Horne & Joyce Condra. The Curate Writes… Firstly thank you to all those who have offered such a warm welcome to Caroline, George and Me. And a special thank you to those of you who knew we were here, but allowed us to remain anonymous for a few weeks in order to settle into our new home and to life in Peel. I’m approaching the end of my first post ordination week, and ordination does already feel like a long time ago. The rhythm of meetings, services, daily life, home visits and morning and evening prayer is slowly becoming fixed in my life here. The lectionary readings for Morning Prayer at the moment have taken us almost right back to the beginning of the bible; we are currently working through the final dozen or so chapters of Genesis – the Story of Joseph. Thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber this has become such a well known story of a young lad who was set apart, who became the object of envy, who was sold into slavery, and then through a series of dreams and chance encounters became second only to Pharaoh. Despite being an all time favourite for many, I’m not always sure that the glamour of Lloyd - Webber’s production does justice the many messages contained within the wider story. I do not believe that this story is intended to show us how to climb the ladder of fame and fortune. Rather, the message is perhaps this; be like Joseph, who despite the rough times that life threw at him, found great gifts and who sought to embrace the opportunities God gave him. This seems a fitting lesson for me as I embark on new journey in a new place. As Christians, God calls us constantly to be in a process of often difficult self examination and growth, even in times of abandonment or loneliness, when we feel imprisoned by life events or when we are free to do as we please. In this Trinity season of growth, I wonder which gifts and opportunities God might be about to awaken in your life and in this community? James Walking Treasure Hunt and BBQ. Held on Friday, 1st July Everyone brought their brains to the Corrin Hall to set off with question papers and pencils for a very enjoyable evening discovering architectural features and unconsidered curios on a walking tour of the centre of Peel. John Tarrant set the treasure hunt questions and his sister Tricia Craig counted everyone out and counted everyone back before marking the papers (very strictly!) In the race against the clock most teams struggled to crack all the clues and find the answers. However team “Born & Bred”, Leonard and Davina Campbell, Val Garrett and Canon Nigel Godfrey only missed a couple of answers to emerge the Victors. The table general Knowledge quiz was won by Gill Poole, Chris Hutt, Shelagh Parry and John Botting. Charles Miller was the master barbecue chef and many thanks to Anne Miller, Helen Parry, Jackie Allen and Dianne Horne for all their help. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All Age Keeills Pilgrimage Walk Rushen Abbey to St German Old Cathedral Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th July 2011 Day One 9.00am Set off from Rushen Abbey. Lunch at Cringle Reservoir at approximately 1pm. On to dinner at Eary Cushlin where the youth will spend the night Day Two 09.30am start walking from Eary Cushlin to lunch at Glen Maye beach at approximately 1pm. 3pm Compline at the Old Cathedral, Peel You are welcome to join as much of the pilgrimage for as you wish Equipment: Walking boots or sturdy shoes and a packed lunch Mosaic 2011 Billed as an “Inspirational Women’s Weekend Away” to be held at the Villa Marina on: Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October More information from Val Garrett Acorn Listening Course A Christian Listening Course will be held in the Corrin Hall on the evening of Friday 4th November between 7pm and 9.30pm and on Saturday 5th November between 9.30am and 4pm. The cost for the course will be £15.00 per person. Christian Listeners provide a period of reflective listening without interruotion so that the speaker is given space to explore matters hat concern them. Summaries are offered as part of the reflective process.In conclusion three carefully worded questions are asked to help the speaker clarify their thoughts and identify appropriate action. Maximum of ten people on any one course. Ten names have already been received. If you would like to attend or require more information please speak to Val Garrett as soon as possible. End of Life Project The Cathedral is encouraging every member of the congreagation to take part and give their views. Questionnaire available from Val Garrett o go to the website http://www.eol.im The Crosses of Mann Exhibition This has been gradually gaining in interest and we are fortunate in being able to keep most of the exhibits until the end of July. Do encourage family, friends and visitors to come and leave their pictorial contributions in the interactive corner. Fishermen’s Mission Exhibition This is housed in the Bishop Wilson Chapel – on the right at the front of the church. Do look at the work from Peel Clothworkers School. Garden Party at the Cockroost Main Road, Glen Vine Saturday 23rd July between 2pm & 4pm. Strawberries & Cream. Fruit Punch Raffle. Cake stall. Try your hand at Boules and Croquet. Follow a nature trail through the woods. Catch a Duck (plastic!) Or just sit on the patio and watch the fun. On the bus route and plenty of parking. If wet to be held indoors. Adults £ 5.00: Children £ 2.50: Family ticket £12.50 Available from Val Garrett or Nigel Godfrey The Manx Deaf Society participated in the Sunday service led by the Bishop in St German’s on 19th June. The preacher was Dr Paul Whittaker who has been deaf all his life. Paul, a Reader, is the founder of Music and the Deaf and the Deaf Youth Orchestra, and was awarded an OBE for Services to Music. His Vicar, Mary Railton-Crowder, who did her curacy at All Saints Douglas, also took part in the service along with her husband, Reader Graham. After the service the Bishop, Paul, Mary and Graham were joined by members of the Manx Deaf Society to do some signing in the sunshine. The Angelus Painting by Jean-Francois Millet, ‘The Angelus’ 1859 A farming couple stop their work for a moment to pray the Angelus at dusk. The word Angelus is taken form the Latin words of Greeting in Luke 1.26-27: ‘The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary’. The Latin for Angel is Angelus. The Angelus evolved in about the 12th century with the practice of lay people on hearing the bells of a local monastery in the evening stopping work for a moment and reciting three Hail Mary’s (Luke 1.42). By the 16th century the Angelus was also being said at 6am, 12 noon as well as 6pm. The prayer involves knitting together a number of scriptural passages associated with Christ’s birth (his incarnation). The restored Cathedral chimes now incorporate the Angelus at the beginning of morning prayer at 9.02 am, at 12.02pm (when prayers are said when a chaplain is on duty) and at the beginning of evening prayer 5.32pm. The bells sound in a pattern and are said in conjunction with the following prayer: The Angelus– continued The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. 3 bells Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with Thee; Blessed art thou among women And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.     Date: 27th October 2020 Isle of Man Post Office Issues The Story of the Nativity on Christmas Stamps 2020 6 Stamps Share a Collection of Beautifully Presented Artworks Depicting the Religious Story of the Nativity This year’s Isle of Man Post Office Christmas stamps, issued on 30 October, feature scenes and artworks inspired by the story of the Nativity. 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral Isle of Man. It is the cathedral church of the Church of England Diocese of Sodor and Man and was made a cathedral by Act of Tynwald in 1980. To commemorate this anniversary the Right Reverend Peter Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man kindly provided the issue text for this beautiful stamp collection. Issue Text Author the Rt Revd PA Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man, said: "These delightful Christmas stamps point to light and hope. The angel speaks of God’s presence in the world, and the simple shepherds are drawn to God’s light and love. Three Kings worship, representing the nations of the world. The light shines in the darkness, and the Mother cradles the Child in profoundest love. The eternal message of Christmas speaks to us today in these six beautiful designs." Nigel Godfrey, Dean of Cathedral Isle of Man, said: ‘It is good to have a stamp issue released on the 40th birthday of the Island’s Cathedral. The Cathedral was actually built a 100 years earlier to replace the ruined one on St Patrick’s Isle, but the driving force behind it - Bishop Rowley Hill died in office before the necessary legislation was passed by Tynwald, so it simply remained a parish church.

    Anglican Cathedrals in the British Isles Religion Media Centre Collaboration House, 77-79 Charlotte Street, London W1T 4LP | [email protected] Charity registration number: 1169562 Thousands of people are expected to visit English Cathedrals this Christmas for special services, carols and nativity plays. Figures produced by the Church of England in the annual ‘Cathedral Statistics’ suggest that Cathedrals continue to hold a special attraction in cities across the country. Christmas services in 2018 attracted 133,000 people but the numbers attending for services throughout Advent, including carol services, concerts and nativity plays topped 617,000. Attendance for Easter services was 58,000, with the numbers attending services in Holy week reaching 95,000. In total, almost 10 million people visited Cathedrals in England in 2018, a rise of almost one million on the previous year, with one third paying as visitors. The rise could be explained by extra events for the World War One Armistice Day commemorations, and by special events laid onto attract visitors such as art, music and space displays. But the number of people regularly worshipping in Cathedrals is much lower - only 36,700 people per week, down by 300 on the previous year, with attendance split evenly between Sunday worship and midweek services. EXPLAINER -- WHAT ARE CATHEDRALS? Cathedrals are the central churches in the dioceses or episcopal areas overseen by bishops. They are centres of learning, worship and Christian mission but also of the Anglican choral tradition, of living heritage and, even, tourism. Within each cathedral is the cathedra, the seat of the bishop and the Latin from which these central churches get their name.
