Summary

Work Experience

Metrohealth Medical Center, Cleveland 2008-present Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Board certified NNP for a 45 bed Level III NICU in Cleveland, Ohio.  Responsible for 6-15 patients during daytime working hours, and up to 20 neonates during on-call shifts overnight of varying acuity levels. Duties include rounding, prescribing medications, responding to routine or compromised deliveries, parental/prenatal counseling for expectant mothers, and expert proficiency at all applicable procedures performed within this environment.  Active member of several committees to include Developmental Care, Clinical Practice Committee, Bacteremia Committee, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program Committee.  Granted funding for the development of the first certification course for PICC line placement at Metrohealth Medical Center. Duties included developing course objectives, teaching materials, organization of information, didactic components, tests, and other learning modules relative to this topic.  Chaired 2 Regional Roundtable conferences held at Metrohealth Medical Center, which included collaboration with colleagues at University Hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic as well as other nearby facilities. Conferences provided venue for discussion and revision of bacteremia protocols to comply with the State of Ohio’s perinatal objective to decrease central line infection rates by 50% within 1 year.  Recently invited back to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA to present Regional Roundtable data and further improve neonatal care in other regions of the United States.

University Hospitals of Cleveland (Rainbow Babies & Children Hospital) 2007 to present Staff Nurse Staff nurse for a 38 bed Level III NICU (with ECMO capabilities) in Cleveland, Ohio. Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital NICU is ranked #2 in the country for neonatal care.  Easily accepts patient care assignments ranging from 1-2 level III neonates per any given shift.  Supplements regular fulltime/part-time staffing needs through the internal agency designation.  Certified Instructor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program  Published a manuscript of family-centered care for the hospital-wide Nursing Network magazine.

Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, WA 2005 to 2007 Research Nurse, Staff Nurse Research Associate (part time) for Department of Clinical Investigations. Flawlessly obtains and organizes data relevant for active research projects. Experience in developing abstracts, subject recruitment, sample procurement, and proper shipping.  Assisted with a daycare-related study of the incidence of human metapneumovirus. Successfully coordinated with parents of subjects when obtaining viral samples, consulted parents regarding viral symptoms and longevity, and coordinated medical appointments.  Completed all required credentialing, to include CITI training and Applied Research Training Staff Nurse (PRN basis) for a 22 bed Level III NICU at Madigan Army Medical Center.  Readily accepted patient loads to encompass varying acuities.  Initiated a car seat safety research study aimed at increasing staff knowledge and education given to parent's upon their neonates discharge to home.  Willingly supplemented the postpartum or pediatric ward's RN staff during high census times.

RLM Healthcare, Fort Benning, GA 2004 to 2005 Staff Nurse 22 bed Mother-Baby Unit and adjoining 6-8 bed Level I Special Care Nursery.  Temporary position accepted throughout spouse's Army Officer Leadership Course at Fort Benning, GA.  Responsible for managing 6-10 well neonates, and the preparation for transport of any critically-ill neonates requiring Level II-III care.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC 2001 to 2004 Staff Nurse, Float Pool Level III NICU (including the accompanying step-down unit) and Post Anesthesia Care/Same Day Surgery Unit.  Filled staffing needs on a last-minute basis as needed.  Readily accepted varying patient assignments in order to maintain the unit's concept of primary nursing.

United States Navy 1998 to 2002 Nurse Manager, Nurse Corps Officer Manager, Staff Nurse, and Scheduling Officer for an 8 bed Level II Nursery and 36 bed Level I Nursery/Mother Baby Unit. Responsible for staff education and training on newborn care and stabilization of the critically-ill neonate pending transport.  Maintained accountability for $3,000,000 in medical equipment. Procured vendors and ordered up-to-date medical equipment to best serve the population.  Completed government employee (civilian performance) appraisals in a timely manner. Efforts put forth to recognize outstanding staff contributions paved the way for a significant pay increase for all Registered Nurses.  Coordinated the installation of a $25,000 state-of-the-art newborn security (HUGS) system and authored visitation policy to ensure the safety of the patient population. Staff Nurse, Scheduler, Clinical Education Officer for a 26 bed Level III NICU.  Transport Nurse for Level I-III neonates during orchestrated move to newly-built Medical Center.  Consistently managed patients with elevated acuities, often while acting as charge RN or admitting RN.  Collaborated with members of the multidisciplinary care team to ensure care planning was appropriate and consistently involved familial input.
