Founded by Dave Gavitt in 1979, the BIG EAST reorganized in 2013, entering a new era by returning to its basketball-focused heritage. The annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, pit- ting the BIG EAST vs. the Big Ten each November, honors Gavitt. The BIG EAST Conference has earned 28 NCAA Tournament berths in its five years in the current 10-team configuration, including six in 2018, seven in 2017, five in 2016, six in 2015 and four in 2014. Nine of the 10 schools in the BIG EAST have earned NCAA berths in the past five seasons: Xavier (5), Villanova (5), Providence (5), Butler (4), Seton Hall (3), Creighton (3), Georgetown (1), St. John’s (1) and Marquette (1). Xavier and Villanova were both No. 1 seeds in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. VU won the national championship in 2016 and again in 2018. Overall, the conference crowns champions in 22 sports with its student-athletes continuing to achieve success in the classroom as well as the athletic arena. In 2012, the seven BIG EAST schools that do not compete in FBS football decided to return to the type of conference alignment that existed when the league was formed in 1979 and quickly surged to national prominence as a college basketball force. On December 15, 2012, these seven institutions (DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova) an- nounced their intention to separate from the football-playing schools in the previous BIG EAST and form an independent association and in March, 2013, the seven schools reached an agreement that enabled them to keep the BIG EAST name and establish a new conference entity beginning on July 1, 2013. The schools also assumed the old conference’s long-term agreement with Madison Square Garden to host the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship. The schools also announced the addition of three distinguished institutions -- Butler, Creighton and Xavier -- and forged a land- mark, long-term broadcast partnership with FOX Sports. BIG EAST institutions are now located in seven of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, includ- ing New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. The BIG EAST has moved its headquarters from Providence, its original location, to New York City. 98 SIX SWEET 16s IN LAST 11 YEARS • @XAVIERMBB BIG EAST CONFERENCE - 2 NCAA NO. 1 SEEDS IN 2018 2018 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP 2018 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP March 7-10 in Madison Square Garden All-Tournament Team Championship Dave Gavitt Trophy Villanova 76, Providence 66 (OT) (Most Outstanding Player) Mikal Bridges, Villanova Semifinals Villanova 87, Butler 68 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team Providence 75, Xavier 72 (OT) Jalen Brunson, Villanova Kyron Cartwright, Providence Quarterfinals Alpha Diallo, Providence Xavier 88, St. John’s 60 Kamar Baldwin, Butler Providence 72, Creighton 68 (OT) Trevon Bluiett, Xavier Villanova 94, Marquette 70 Butler 75, Seton Hall 74 First Round St. John’s 88, Georgetown 77 Marquette 72, DePaul 69 2017-18 BIG EAST STANDINGS Team (Postseason) BIG EAST Games Home Away All Pct.
