  • From Bombay to Mumbai
Travelogue Armchair travels From Bombay to Mumbai This learning reminiscence discussion with six senior citizens from Eudora, Missouri, explores a different travel destination each month with things to learn, questions to answer, and a whole lot of fun along the way. This month they are traveling to Mumbai, India, to immerse themselves in the Indian culture. Traveling How-To’s & Tips • This is a copy of the complete trip for the facilitator to use. This activity can be acted out or read aloud in a skit-like manner by participants representing the six different Front Porch characters using this large-print dialogue. • Check out the links in the article for additional information to bring to the activity. • This PDF slide presentation may be better suited as a stand-alone activity for some audiences. The presenter can refer to the facilitator copy of the complete trip for links and more information to add as the slides are reviewed. • Post a sign announcing the trip. • If your group isn’t familiar with the Front Porch Travelers, have them Meet the McGivers (and friends). A Travel Advisory from Nell and Truman: If using all the information in Travelogue seems too complex for your group, trim it back and just present sections—such as showing and discussing the slide show or copies of the pictures, reading and discussing trivia points, or asking and discussing questions from the Discussion Starters. From Bombay to Mumbai Introduction India is a land of mystery and intrigue—so many sights, sounds, and smells (some good and some not so good).

  • Mumbai Street Shopping
Shops Mumbai Street Shopping Colaba Causeway: The everyday carnival that is the Colaba Causeway market is a shopping experience like no other in Mumbai. Geared especially towards tourists, that infamous Indian saying of "sab kuch milega" (you'll get everything) certainly applies at this market. Dodge persistent balloon and map sellers, as you meander along the sidewalk and peruse the stalls. Want your name written on a grain of rice? That's possible too. If you need a break from shopping, pop into Leopold's Cafe or Cafe Mondegar, two well-known Mumbai hangouts. Location: Colaba Causeway, Colaba, south Mumbai. Opening Hours: Daily from morning until night. What to Buy: Handicrafts, books, jewelry, crystals, brass items, incense, clothes. Chor Bazar: Navigate your way through crowded streets and crumbling buildings, and you'll find Chor Bazaar, nestled in the heart of Muslim Mumbai. This fascinating market has a history spanning more than 150 years. Its name means "thieves market", but this was derived from the British mispronunciation of its original name of Shor Bazaar, "noisy market". Eventually stolen goods started finding their way into the market, resulting in it living up to its new name! Location: Mutton Street, between S V Patel and Moulana Shaukat Ali Roads, near Mohammad Ali Road in south Mumbai. Opening Hours: Daily 11 a.m. until 7.30 p.m., except Friday. The Juma Market is held there on Fridays. What to Buy: Antiques, bronze items, vintage items, trash & treasure, electronics item. Linking Road: A fusion of modern and traditional, and East meets West, in one of Mumbai’s hippest suburbs.

  • Mumbai Retail Guide
MUMBAI Cushman & Wakefield Global Cities Retail Guide Cushman & Wakefield | Mumbai | 2019 0 Mumbai serves as the financial capital of India and accounts for the highest GDP contribution in the country, currently standing at approximately 6.61%. Mumbai is the second most populated city in the country with a population of approximately 22 million. Mumbai’s retail market is characterised by smaller disorganised retailers or corner shops retailing various commodities ranging from food to clothes and other household items, as is the case across most cities and towns in India. Rapid economic growth and changing consumer preferences have transformed Mumbai’s retail market, with organised retail increasingly playing a much larger part. Over the years, several large organised developments have sprung up across the city, ranging from mass to premium and luxury. Several local and international luxury brands have opened stores in Mumbai and many consider the city a launch pad for their brand. The presence of Bollywood, one of the world’s leading movie industries, has fuelled the growth of organised retail in Mumbai, with many stars endorsing both local and global brands alike. Brands such as H&M, GAP, Sephora, Scotch & Soda, Muji, Massimo Dutti, Jo Malone, Longchamp, American Eagle, Armani Exchange, Hackett, Onitsuka Tiger, Hamley's, Simon Carter, Du Rhône Chocolatier, Bath & Body Works, Franck Muller, Hublot have all entered the Mumbai retail market. New entrants tend to open stores in malls first, within prominent retail developments, then subsequently establish a footprint on major streets. Luxury labels benefit from high-net-worth individuals (HNI) in Mumbai, many of whom travel abroad frequently and have high disposable incomes.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY THE GRADUATE SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE NEOLIBERAL ISLANDS: GATED SPACES, PERMEABLE BOUNDARIES AND URBAN HYGIENE IN MUMBAI, 1990-2013 A THESIS IN ARCHITECTURE BY APARNA PARIKH © 2013 APARNA PARIKH SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE AUGUST 2013 The thesis of Aparna Parikh was reviewed and approved* by the following: Alexandra Staub Associate Professor of Architecture Thesis Advisor Denise Costanzo Assistant Professor of Architecture Daniel Purdy Professor of German Mehrdad Hadighi Professor, Stuckeman Chair of Integrative Design Head of Department of Architecture *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ii abstract This thesis sets out to understand the manifestation of power and its varying relationships with identity through a spatial analysis of neoliberal Mumbai. It aims to illustrate ways in which sweeping global visions are received in specific localized ways on the ground, and the ways in which these are influenced by, and influence the identity of the users of that space. The appropriation of power, and its resultant degrees of displacement, is being viewed through the lens of spatial analysis theoretically informed by Henri Lefebvre’s The Production of Space, which sets up a tension between perceived, conceived, and lived space. The notions of displacement are informed further through the lens of hygiene, brought out in Mary Douglas’ conceptualization of dirt as matter out of place. These hierarchical relationships, and manifestation of control, range from a fair degree of compliance to a strong resistance, impacted deeply by the identity of the user. The positioning of the observer and observed is greatly informed by a feminist lens, which also helps provide an intersectional understanding of identity.
