  • The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap
Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. Keywords: dromosphere, dromology, Afrofuturism, electro-rap, thirdspace, fantasy, Newcleus, Strange U Introduction During the mid-1970s, the language of New York City’s pioneering hip hop practitioners brought them fame amongst their peers, yet the methods of its musical production brought heavy criticism from established musicians.

While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD.. • A Few Observations About Previews
A FEW OBSERVATIONS ABOUT PREVIEWS RICHMOND ADAMS POPMEC RESEARCH BLOG In the early spring of 2019, my wife and I went to see Peter Farrelly’s Green Book and appreciated its presentation of the ever-present issues involving race, sexuality, and class. More interesting than another presentation of promise concerning the 1960s, however, had nothing to do with the film we went to see or even its portrayal of the relationship between Frank Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) and Dr. Donald Shirley (Mahershala Ali). Rather, it was the specific previews shown that evening which sug- gested more prescient questions concerning our present circumstances. At the same time, I have no idea if Dream Works planned those specific previews to be shown as lead-ins to Farrelly’s film. By placing Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Captain Marvel as prefaces to Green Book, viewers were given, even unintentionally, a glimpse not so much at the human propensity for self-destruction, but our acquiescence to what ap- pear as various expressions of deepening cultural impotence. The initial preview was for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which reminded viewers of the inevitable sequel to the simply named Godzilla, and how it served as 2014’s re- newal of the films released in the mid-50s. With the usual reliance on CGI that almost invariably reduces narrative to “blowing up the world” (or at least a good portion of it), the preview showed the creature who happened to generate intense cinematic hor- ror during the era of American post war hegemony not as an (almost) undefeatable villain who indiscriminately destroys, but rather, as the apparent savior for what re- mained of national stability in the aftermath of 9–11, the Iraq War, and the 2008 and 2009 Great Recession.

  • Avengers Dissemble! Transmedia Superhero Franchises and Cultic Management
Taylor 1 Avengers dissemble! Transmedia superhero franchises and cultic management Aaron Taylor, University of Lethbridge Abstract Through a case study of The Avengers (2012) and other recently adapted Marvel Entertainment properties, it will be demonstrated that the reimagined, rebooted and serialized intermedial text is fundamentally fan oriented: a deliberately structured and marketed invitation to certain niche audiences to engage in comparative activities. That is, its preferred spectators are often those opinionated and outspoken fan cultures whose familiarity with the texts is addressed and whose influence within a more dispersed film- going community is acknowledged, courted and potentially colonized. These superhero franchises – neither remakes nor adaptations in the familiar sense – are also paradigmatic byproducts of an adaptive management system that is possible through the appropriation of the economics of continuity and the co-option of online cultic networking. In short, blockbuster intermediality is not only indicative of the economics of post-literary adaptation, but it also exemplifies a corporate strategy that aims for the strategic co- option of potentially unruly niche audiences. Keywords Marvel Comics superheroes post-cinematic adaptations Taylor 2 fandom transmedia cult cinema It is possible to identify a number of recent corporate trends that represent a paradigmatic shift in Hollywood’s attitudes towards and manufacturing of big budget adaptations. These contemporary blockbusters exemplify the new industrial logic of transmedia franchises – serially produced films with a shared diegetic universe that can extend within and beyond the cinematic medium into correlated media texts. Consequently, the narrative comprehension of single entries within such franchises requires an increasing degree of media literacy or at least a residual awareness of the intended interrelations between correlated media products.
