Well to say this superb bassist has had an illustrious career, would be an understatement. I'm pretty certain I first saw Dave at Bourbon Street. Back in those days one of the many fine jazz clubs in this city, oh well no use lamenting that era. Anyhow, I well remember the the acclaimed duo gigs with Dave and the late legendary seven string guitarist, Lenny Breau. To think it was back in the 60s when Dave first performed with Lenny, whom he went on to record with. As well as being a competent jazz bassist, Dave has excelled in the classical vein performing with numerous symphony orchestras. In his over 50 years on the jazz scene he has performed with the best including, Oscar Peterson, Joe Williams, Kenny Burrell, Cedar Walton, , Hank Jones, , Mulgrew Miller, Tommy Flanagan, James Moody, , Don Thompson, Bernie Senensky, Reg Schwager, Norman Marshall Villeneuve, , Renee Rosnes, the list goes on. This award winning musician & composer has plenty of “notches” on his bass, including the prestigious Order of . In my over 60 years on the jazz scene Dave rates as one of best bassist I have heard , his solos are second to none. I have often thought that he is capable of a solo gig.

Now we come to his latest recording, DAVE YOUNG QUINTET – ONE WAY UP featuring choice pianist, Renee Rosnes. No weak link in this quintet with veteran players like, Terry Clarke, drums, Perry White , saxophones, Kevin Turcotte, trumpet, special guest, Renee Rosnes, piano and of course the man himself. Dave Young. bass. This CD. Is my kind of jazz , as I've often said, “I'm an old Bebop man from way back when”. I like my jazz ”straight ahead “ , I don't want to figure out “what the hell are they doing!”. Excellent compositions and arrangements on this “tasty” CD., many by Dave himself. Well worth adding to your collection, and if this is going to be your last recording Dave. you are going out in style.

On Tuesday evening November 22nd 2016 myself and long-time Cuban lady friend arrived at the Blau Costa Verde Beach Resort, Playa Pesquero, Holguin, Cuba. This was a Sunwing package booked through 510 Travel Agency. Six months earlier we were at the same hotel which we enjoyed and decided to go back, were we in for a surprise. On checking in at the reception desk, I was told in rather an abrupt manner, “ to sit down and wait while we check out your Cuban lady friend's documentation”. I told them we were here only 6 months ago and didn't have this problem. The response was “please wait we will call you”. Needless to say my Cuban lady friend was embarrassed and I was extremely annoyed. Fourty minutes later we were called and told everything was ok. We have stayed at many hotels in Cuba and never been put through this type of scrutiny. Unfortunately this was only the beginning, a further ordeal was soon to follow. As before, at this same hotel we had my lady friend's children over for the week-end, in Friday out on Sunday, as they have to be back at school. They share the room with us as stated in the Sunwing pack- age maximum of 3 adults in a room maximum of 2 children. The girl is 16 (a very young 16) the boy 12, there were 2 large beds in the room and one small. However, when I came to check them in I was told, once again, in an abrupt manner, “ the girl can't share the room with you (even though she did before) she will have to have a single room by herself ”. On hearing this she became very perturbed and said “mummy I don't want to be in a room by myself!” she was very upset. Three hours later after dealing with the reception supervisor, the Customer Service representative and an assistant manger they decided she could stay in the same room as us.

Finally, I thought, the ordeal is over and we were about to leave, I was again beckoned and told you will have to pay for the little boy. Even though it is clearly stated in the Sunwing package up to 12 years old is free. Another hour of negotiations go by and they reluctantly give him a reduced rate. They also made a point of telling me that Sunwing Holidays may include them in their package deals, but they don't run the hotel. In over 40 years of visiting Cuba I have never had anything like this to deal with, it is absolutely shameful. My total holiday was ruined due to the constant aggravation, it left me stressed out. There is no acceptable excuse for this intolerable behavior. I have lodged a formal complaint to the hotel, which was ignored, my travel agent also filed a complaint, that was ignored, Sunwing sent a complaint, who they did respond to. However, in their response they disavowed any responsibility for the treatment I received. Not even so much as an apology, in other words “they couldn't care less”. As a gesture of goodwill Sunwing gave both myself and lady friend a small voucher towards our next vacation with them. Bearing in mind this was not a Sunwing problem and in no way do I hold them responsible. Let's face it after being crammed into a seat on a flight with barely enough room to move your legs, and lucky to get a glass of water. No free meals or sandwiches anymore, paying through the nose for your trip, mostly in exorbitant taxes. Then to arrive at your destination feeling tired only to be confronted in this indignant manner. Not the way to start your holiday which you have worked hard to pay for. This was clearly an action instigated by the senior executives of this hotel, and carried out by their subordinates. I felt compelled to write about this experi- ence, because I wouldn't want anyone else to be subjected to this type of provocation.

Well here we are in our 22nd year, and I don't mind telling you it's been a constant battle to survive. However, I must thank the exceptional advertisers who do use our publication to promote their venues. I urge my readers both on-line and hard copy to note who they are. At least they understand that free, non-profit publications such as ours survive on advertising. Once again please don't send me anything regarding concerts, gigs or CDs unless you want to advertise them, otherwise they will be ignored. My advertising rates remain at cost, do take advantage of them. These ridiculous low rates are for photo-ready only PDF or JPEG format are OK.

As you can see we have got off to a good start with top-notch artists coming into, The Burlington Performing Arts Centre, Burlington. The Living Arts Centre, Mississauga, Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto. J.P.E.C. Jazz Performance & Education Centre, and for those going to England ,The Concorde Club, Southampton, Hampshire. At least it's nice to know that there are fine establishments who have something worth promoting. As most have heard, Hugh's Room might be going under, all acts for February have been cancelled. Although as of writing there is a strong chance it might re-open in March. The very idea of this excellent room closing sent shock waves through Toronto's entertainment world. I'm sure there will be a concerted effort to keep it alive. It was my favorite club, the layout, atmosphere, acoustics, food, and friendly staff. Richard Carson, the present owner was usually around and we always managed to have a nice chat. In fact, this April the club will be exactly 16 years old. Richard named the club after his late brother, Hugh Ogilvy Carson (1950-1999) who died from cancer at the young age of 49.

Although, Hugh's Room wasn't a jazz spot , it did from time to time offer jazz. The management did present a variety of entertainers , Blues, Latin , Folk, Country, Soul, Funky stuff, Rock N Roll, they had a broad venue, something to please everyone. I don't mean to sound like the game is over, because I think , and hope it will eventually be saved. We already have a situation in this city where good jazz is hard to find, that's noticeable by the lack of jazz advertising I receive. If you don't see promoted, I have know idea what's happening. That's what I tell my readers when they ask.

One thing I do know, is that with the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music we continue to produce superb young jazz musicians. Their tutors are amongst the best in the world. We can only hope after their long arduous studies are completed, they will have somewhere to play.
