JOHN ISNER JAN ZIELINSKI AND ROBERT LOEB FORM FORMIDABLE DOUBLES TEAM FOR GEORGIA MEN’S TENNIS

Collin Huguley | Staff Writer | Red & Black April 5, 2017

4,943 miles. That is the distance between the cities of Warsaw, Poland, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. One is the culturally rich capital of a nation in Central Europe, while the other is a beach vacation spot on the Carolina coast.

While the distance between the two cities is great and the differences between them are vast, each place produced a tennis player who took his talents to Athens to pursue a collegiate tennis career. And those two players have thrived side-by-side.

Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb are those two players and together, they form one of the most formidable doubles teams in the entire country. The pair has taken the No. 1 doubles court by storm this year, going 20-6 overall so far and are ranked as the No. 3 doubles team in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

“[Robert] is a great doubles player and I really like playing with him,” Zielinski said. “We understand each other really well on the court. He has a great serve and great volleys. We just complete each other really well.”

Despite the amount of success they have achieved so far this season, this duo’s partnership is still young.

Loeb, a freshman, joined the Bulldogs this past fall as the No. overall 4 recruit in the class of 2016, while Zielinski was a rising sophomore and a well-established doubles player.

Zielinski went 19-9 in doubles play as a freshman and made more noise during the fall season. Zielinski went 15-2 in doubles play this fall and won the doubles title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships with teammate Walker Duncan in September.

But after playing a few matches together in the fall, Zielinski and Loeb were paired up in January to play a match at the MLK Invitational in Atlan- ta. They squared off with Georgia Tech’s team of Christopher Eubanks and Andrew Li.

And the Bulldog pair netted a 6-2 win, which led to consideration by Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz to give the two more time together mov- ing forward. Zielinski wanted to explore the potential that they displayed at the MLK Invitational.

“Coach Manny asked me if I wanted to play with Walker or Robert,” Zielinski said. “They are both great players and I had played with Walker a lot so I wanted a chance to see how it went with Robert. Then we just stayed on No. 1 and played really well.”

The two styles of play Zielinski and Loeb possess have proven to fit together well. Loeb brings a very powerful serve to the table while Zielinski is excels with his play at the net.

And with the strong connection that he has formed with his partner off of the court, Loeb has found comfort and settled in well to being his collegiate career.

“We get along great,” Loeb said. “And whenever one of us is struggling, we always step up for each other.”

Aside from their styles of play, the two Bulldog complement each other in demeanor. Loeb’s poised attitude fuses with Zielinski’s high energy and outgoing competitive fire to create a strong mental combination.

“I am a person that tries to get loud on the court and really into the match,” Zielinski said. “Robert is kind of a guy that stays quieter and we just complete each other. I try to pump him up as much as I can and I think that it works. We are winning a lot and getting into our opponents’ heads.”

The combination of skills and intangibles has made for a successful young pair that has already racked up some signature wins.

Despite being ranked at No. 3, Zielinski and Loeb captured a win over the current No. 1-ranked doubles team when they defeated Christian Sera- phim and Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest in March.

Even though both players were known to have talent heading into this season, picking up a win like the one against Wake Forest is something that few could have predicted.

“As I started watching them play together, I thought they had great chemistry and were able to play with a high level of energy and enthusiasm,” Diaz said. “Anybody would say that they are coming along quicker than expected to this point. It has been a good surprise and is something that has just evolved.”

After the high levels of success that this doubles team has experienced so far in its young tenure, the two are not yet satisfied with where they stand.

Their eyes are set higher than being the No. 3 doubles team in the country. They also want to prove that a kid from Warsaw and one from Hilton Head can be the best that the nation can offer. And, to be a reliable force for the Bulldogs for years to come.

“The goal is to be the No. 1 team in the country and we are really close to accomplishing that,” Zielinski said. “And honestly, that is just the rank- ings and anyone can beat anyone. We’re just trying to play our best and help the team get the doubles point because that is the most important thing.” SUPPORTIVE HOME CROWD SPURS ON GEORGIA MEN’S TENNIS TO VICTORY OVER FLORIDA

Collin Huguley | Staff Writer | Red & Black April 7, 2017

A large, energetic crowd came out to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday evening, and the Georgia men’s tennis team sent them home happy.

The No. 13 Bulldogs embarked in one of their most crucial matches of the season against the No. 14 Florida Gators. The Bulldogs improved to 10-0 in Southeastern Conference play with a 6-1 win and, with a Texas A&M loss to Mississippi State, are alone atop the SEC standings.

The win over Florida also eliminated the Gators from contention for the regular season SEC title, making the win even sweeter for the Bulldogs. But the sweetest part was to reward all of the fans that came out to support them.

“This was the best crowd that I have seen at Georgia,” sophomore Walker Duncan said. “Everyone was going crazy. There was every kind of emo- tion that you could want so it was fun to be out there.”

In a change from other matches, a pep band and the “Dance Dawgs” were in attendance to rally support among the crowd. Several players from the Georgia football team, highlighted by quarterback Jacob Eason, were also in attendance.

The crowd set a season high of 2,481 people, and they were loud for the duration. So loud, even, that two Georgia fans were ejected while sitting behind court no. 1. But nonetheless, the Bulldogs fed off of their supporters.

“The crowd was unbelievable tonight,” freshman Nathan Ponwith said. “My match was so tight tonight and to feel the energy from the crowd was amazing.”

Despite being a program that has won six NCAA championships, the Georgia men’s tennis team is not usually the center of attention when it comes to Bulldog athletics. But for this night, the team was just that.

And they delivered a signature performance under the lights and the watchful eye of 2,481 spectators.

“[Our team] gave the crowd something to cheer about,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “They thrive in this atmosphere. These kids come to Geor- gia to play in front of crowds like this so it was great to see our fans support our team the way they did.” GEORGIA MEN’S TENNIS CLINCHES SHARE OF SEC TITLE WITH WIN OVER SOUTH CAROLINA

Collin Huguley | Staff Writer | Red & Black April 9, 2017

The No. 13-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team stayed hot on Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 20 South Carolina for its seventh straight win.

The Bulldogs (15-6, 11-0 SEC) scraped by the Gamecocks (18-5, 7-3 SEC) by a 4-3 score to secure at least a share of the regular season Southeast- ern Conference title. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Bulldogs have won a piece of the SEC crown.

“South Carolina played very well and challenged us at all spots,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “(The key is) not being happy, not being content. We’re just getting better with each match. We’ve got to get back up and prepare a little better and do things that are uncomfortable to be the team that we are capable of being.”

It was the bottom of the lineup that allowed Georgia to establish comfort in the match.

Freshman Robert Loeb was dominant in a straight set win over Paul Jubb on singles court No. 6. Loeb experienced few problems and rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. He improves 10-5 on singles court No. 6 this season and gave Georgia a 2-0 lead over the Gamecocks.

“I keep getting more confident almost every day,” Loeb said. “I’m feeling confident with my second serve, even if I don’t get an ace so that has been helping me.”

Wayne Montgomery, the No. 25 player in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, struggled on court No. 2. He fell to No. 47 Gabriel Friedrich in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

But on court No. 5, Walker Duncan won his ninth straight match with relative ease. The sophomore from Atlanta cruised over Alex Fennell in a 6-1, 6-4 win. This gave Georgia a comfortable 3-1 lead, with the team clicking on other courts, as well.

The clinch came on court No. 1 with freshman Nathan Ponwith.

Ponwith rebounded from a Friday night loss against No. 69 Harrison O’Keefe. The freshman put on a sharp performance to win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. He improved to 4-1 since taking over for Montgomery on No. 1.

“It is a team effort,” Ponwith said. “My match just happened (to be for the clinch). We’re in a good spot (right now). I don’t know if it’s the best but we’re always improving.”

After Ponwith’s clinch, sophomores Emil Reinberg and Jan Zielinski played out their matches, with both going into three sets. And the Game- cocks made the score much closer.

Reinberg struggled out of the gate and lose the first set to Andrew Schafer, 6-2. The Atlanta native responded with a 6-1 win in the second set.

But in the end, Schafer outlasted Reinberg and won the third set 6-3.

Zielinski also came out of the gate slow on court No. 4 against Yancy Dennis. Dennis took the first set 6-3 before Zielinski responded with a strong 6-4 win in the second set. He lost the third set 6-2.

The Bulldogs were, however, given an early scare in doubles play.

On doubles court No. 1, the No. 3-ranked team of Zielinski and Loeb was upset by the No. 31 team of Dennis and O’Keefe by a 6-3 score. But the Bulldogs picked things up on other courts to take an early lead.

The No. 53-ranked team of Reinberg and Ponwith cruised to victory over Fennell and Sam Swank by a 6-2 score. The doubles point was clinched on court No. 3 for the Bulldogs. The team of Montgomery and Duncan came through in a close match to win 7-5 and give Georgia a 1-0 lead. WAYNE MONTGOMERY FINDING SUCCESS AFTER MOVING TO COURT TWO

Collin Huguley | Staff Writer | Red & Black April 12, 2017

Junior Wayne Montgomery has had a decorated career thus far for the Georgia men’s tennis team.

In his first two seasons in Athens, Montgomery was a two-time First-Team All-SEC performer and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2015. He entered this spring ranked as the No. 22 singles player in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and was set to play on singles court No. 1 for the Bulldogs.

But in his junior season, Montgomery struggled. While taking on the opposition’s best player time in and time out, he went 5-9 to start the sea- son in the No. 1 slot.

“It’s hard playing the best guy,” Montgomery said. “Not one team’s No. 1 is bad. You have to be 120 percent for every match. I just try to learn from [losses] and improve on small things.”

Heading into Georgia’s match against LSU on March 23, Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz decided to try to make Montgomery a little more comfortable.

Montgomery possessed a career record of 21-7 on singles court No. 2 heading into this season, and Diaz decided to slide the junior down one slot on the lineup.

“I thought that by taking a little pressure off of him and allowing him to play at No. 2 would allow him to gain some [confidence] back,” head coach Manuel Diaz said.

Thus far, that switch has paid off for the Bulldogs.

Montgomery has gone 5-1 in singles play since moving to No. 2 and has beaten three ranked opponents in that span, which is one win shy of his four wins over ranked opponents in his 15 matches on No. 1.

“[The lineup change] has helped me in a lot of ways,” Montgomery said. “It kind of gives me a different perspective of how I approach things. It’s not so much about where I play (in the lineup). It’s just a matter of getting that point for the team.”

Even after his difficult campaign at No. 1 to start the season, Montgomery’s teammates are confident in his ability to deliver for them, especially in vital moments.

“He always plays well when we need him,” sophomore Walker Duncan said. “He is a big-time tournament player. NCAA’s will be here and I guaran- tee you that he will show out.”

This change in the lineup has seemed to benefit all parties for the Bulldogs. In addition to Montgomery’s success, freshman Nathan Ponwith has moved to No. 1 and gone 4-1 in that slot thus far. The team as a whole has gone 6-0 since Diaz made the switch to stabilize the top of his lineup.

As for Montgomery, his objective remains the same as they were before the switch as he aims to live up to the “big-time tournament player” title that his teammate gave him. “ I’m feeling a little better,” Montgomery said. “I’m still not where I want to be but it’s a process. If I just focus on the small things, I think that will work towards my end goal of playing my best tennis during NCAA’s.” STRONG SEASON GIVES GEORGIA SHARE OF SEC TITLE DESPITE LOSS TO TEXAS A&M

Anna Glenn Grove | Staff Writer | Red & Black April 19, 2017

The Georgia men’s tennis team fell in a 5-2 match against Texas A&M on Saturday in College Station, Texas. Despite this, the team still managed to become co-champions of the Southeastern Conference alongside the Aggies due to its play throughout the regular season.

The Bulldogs were undefeated (11-0) in SEC play before their match against Texas A&M, and this is the reason why they can share this title.

“We would’ve liked to win, but they played really well and you’ve gotta give credit to them,” freshman Nathan Ponwith said.

Both Emil Reinberg and Ponwith said that the loss can be attributed to an overall slow start. Reinberg said the team competes well as a whole, but it lets itself down when it cannot execute from the beginning.

After starting slow and losing the initial doubles point, there lay an immense pressure on the Bulldogs to deliver in singles play.

“I think if we all just picked up on the first point, and just started with more energy then I think maybe it would be a different story,” Reinberg said. “I think we should just work on that, and really try and focus on every single point acting like it’s the last point.”

Ponwith said he was unhappy with his personal play and the way his singles match went.

“I played a guy who was really aggressive playing, and there are some tactics I could’ve used to slow him down and change a few things,” Pon- with said.

Reinberg also said that elements out of their control could have added to the outcome. He said their match against the Aggies last year was extremely windy, and the team played in these similar conditions on Saturday.

After the match, the team convened in the locker room, and Reinberg said it can learn more from losses like these.

“We still got the share of the SEC title, and still got our rings, so we definitely take that as a positive,” Reinberg said. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of, there’s nothing to put our heads down and I think we’re all coming together. We’re all getting closer for sure.”

Ponwith said there is no team in the SEC that the Bulldogs cannot hang with, and the possibility of a rematch against Texas A&M in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the SEC Tournament will allow the teams to compete on different courts, a different surface and in a different city.

“I think we all trust each other on the court, off the court, and I think the team spirit is definitely good,” Reinberg said. “If we just keep that going until NCAA’s, then hopefully we’ll get the job done.” GEORGIA TENNIS FRESHMEN REMIND MANUEL DIAZ OF 2000 TEAM

Anna Glenn Grove | Staff Writer | Red & Black March 1, 2017

With five straight losses near the beginning of the season, the Georgia men’s tennis team is facing challenges it hasn’t in past years. Part of this could be due to the inexperience of almost half the team.

The team’s roster has six freshmen, more than any Manuel Diaz has had in his 28 years of head coaching at Georgia.

In 2000, however, Diaz’s team had four freshmen. He said that this current team’s group of freshmen remind him of that year. Diaz said that 2000 was a frustrating year for the program because he knew they had the most talented freshman class in the country, but he had to convince the players of how good they truly were.

Diaz said the same about this year’s new group.

“They don’t seem to realize how good they are,” Diaz said. “They don’t seem to know it yet, and as soon as we begin to know it and begin to trust ourselves a little bit more, we’re more capable of playing freely.”

The current lineup has freshmen and sophomores playing 5 of the 6 singles courts, so this young group is getting an abundant amount of expo- sure.

“I think we have tremendous ability, and we have great kids,” Diaz said. “We just gotta mature as we go along this year.”

Sophomore Emil Reinberg said he has been impressed with the freshmen, specifically Robert Loeb’s singles and doubles play early in the season.

He also said Nathan Ponwith’s work effort has stuck out to him.

This is also the first time in Diaz’s 28 years that there are no seniors on the team. Because of this, juniors like Wayne Montgomery have stepped up into leadership roles for the young players.

Montgomery said it has been hard working with a whole new dynamic on this team, but the freshmen have shown a strong level of maturity and progress.

“It’s a start, you know we all have our first season and kind of struggle and hit some obstacles, but they’ll overcome them,” Montgomery said.

Reinberg also seems to think that the freshmen “know what the deal is”. He said they are a mentally tough group and stay motivated even after these five straight losses.

“I think we just tell them we’ve been here before, we’ve been in the same situation, especially last year,” Reinberg said. “We came out better, we came out stronger, we came out more prepared and it’s all a learning experience.”

Montgomery said when you get to college, tennis becomes more of a team sport than an individual sport. Although that can get freshmen off side in the beginning, they will learn to adapt to the difference.

“It’s not that much of ‘you don’t have any experience’ or ‘you’re new that’s why you’re playing bad,’ everyone knows how to play tennis,” Mont- gomery said. “It’s just more of the outside factors that contribute.”

Montgomery said he doesn’t think the inexperience of the freshmen has contributed greatly to the team’s latest results. He thinks it is more of a group effort and preparing the right way for certain opponents.

“I feel like time will tell,” Montgomery said. ALL EYES ON NO. 5: WALKER DUNCAN DELIVERS IN BIGGEST MOMENT FOR GEORGIA MEN’S TENNIS

Collin Huguley | Staff Writer | Red & Black March 15, 2017

As the match between the then-No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs and the unranked Arkansas Razorbacks progressed on the afternoon of March 12, it became clear that it would go down to the very end.

Before those in attendance knew it, the match was tied 3-3 and Georgia’s 26-match home conference winning streak was in serious jeopardy.

The outcome of the match all hung in the balance in lineup slot No. 5, occupied by sophomore Walker Duncan. And he came through when it mattered the most.

Duncan rolled to victory over Johan den Toom in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and dubbed the performance as one of the best of his college career as he extended the team’s winning streak to 27 straight conference wins at home.

“I don’t know why I played the way I did,” Duncan said. “I wish I could figure out the magic potion and do it every day. But I was really excited for this match. I was ready for it and faced it head on. It was so fun to be out there and just have the team supporting you.”

But that weekend was not all success for Duncan.

In the team’s match against Ole Miss on March 10, he was the only Bulldog to lose, as the team defeated the Rebels, 6-1. It was that disappoint- ment that fueled Duncan’s obsession for improvement and it shined through on Sunday.

“After the match, I stayed after for about an hour and I worked out some kinks,” Duncan said. “I felt really comfortable and confident on the court on Sunday. I’d like to think it was one of my better matches.”

Duncan’s win lifted the Bulldogs over a dangerous Razorback team, a group that features two of the top-25 players in the country, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Georgia has now strung together five consecutive wins after a 3-5 start to the season. While Duncan was pleased with his performance in the clutch moment, his teammates knew that he is geared to come through when his team needs it most.

“I’ve been around Walker for so long, so I know his attitude, his mindset, and how hard he competes,” sophomore Emil Reinberg said. “He wants to be in that moment. That is so crucial because you’re thinking about the positives, not the negatives.”

At one point in the match, the Bulldogs trailed 3-2 and seemed to be losing momentum to the Razorbacks.

But Duncan’s coaches never lost faith in him and were aware of his ability to win any match at any given time.

“We’ve got all the confidence in the world in Walker,” associate head coach Bo Hodge said. “I thought it was a great opportunity for him, to have the match come down to him. He loves being in the spotlight with everyone watching him. That’s why he’s going to win a lot of matches for us.”

Now, Georgia’s home winning streak is intact and Duncan’s confidence is back up. But Duncan was the only one who seemed to struggle to explain how he played so well with the match on the line.

For his teammate, it was a simple explanation: Duncan is a fighter.

“His competitiveness brought the best out of him in that moment,” Reinberg said. “He is a fighter, no matter what the score is. His character came out in how positive he was in that situation.” FULL CIRCLE: BO HODGE GOES FROM GEORGIA PLAYER TO COACH AT HIS ALMA MATER

Collin Huguley | Staff Writer | Red & Black March 15, 2017

The chance to go home is often something those in sports relish. Whether it be LeBron James or Rickey Henderson, it takes someone unique to make a journey return to where it began. Bo Hodge, the associate head coach for the Georgia men’s tennis team, has found a way to do just that. Hodge was born and raised in Athens and his father, Mark, played tight end at Georgia, where he was a captain on the 1978 Bulldog football team. The younger Hodge grew up playing multiple sports, but tennis is the sport that stuck.

“A couple of my buddies started playing tennis,” Hodge said. “So I went out there and hit some balls and realized I was pretty good.”

Hodge became an accomplished junior player and led Athens Academy to a state championship in 1998, Hodge’s sophomore year of high school. After that season, Hodge made a decision he hoped would better his tennis career.

“When I was about 15 years old, I moved to Florida to take [tennis] a little more seriously,” Hodge said. “There wasn’t a lot of tennis in Athens.”

With his sights set on a life centered around tennis, Hodge moved to Boca Raton, Florida, to train with private coach Stanford Boster.

“[When I moved to Florida] is when I knew I had a chance to do something special,” Hodge said.

Once Hodge decided to compete at the collegiate level, his college choice was easy.

“I realized college was the best thing for me,” Hodge said. “And there was really only one place for me to go.”

Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz had met Hodge’s father while the two were student-athletes at Georgia, and Diaz knew Bo was destined to follow in their footsteps. “I knew all along that if Bo was going to go to college, he would want to be a Bulldog,” Diaz said.

After debating whether or not to go pro, Hodge was admitted and played his freshman season on the 2001 Bulldogs, a team that would end up going 28-1 and winning the national championship.

During that season, Hodge was named an ITA All-American. His familiarity with the Georgia culture allowed him to fit in seamlessly.

“A big part of Bo’s success was that he didn’t know any better,” Diaz said. “He knew every kid we had. He was comfortable with the Georgia tennis legacy and tradition.”

Then-Georgia assistant coach John Roddick had helped coach Hodge when he moved to Boca Raton to train and knew he would have an im- pact.

“Getting Bo put us in a position to be a dominant team,” Roddick said. “Instead of being a national championship contender, we became the favorite.”

Hodge went on to be one of seven four-year All-Americans in Georgia history and appeared in two NCAA finals, returning to the title match in 2002.

In Hodge’s final two seasons, the Bulldogs were not quite as successful. But through the eyes of the people around him, those may have been the best years of his playing career.

The 2003 Bulldogs had lost three key players from the previous year’s team. The team posted just an 8-16 record that season, but Hodge was still a standout. “It was a tough year but he held us afloat,” Diaz said. “People judge success by how much hardware you bring in. I don’t. I judge what kind of impact he made and of all of his years, 2003 was his most impactful year.”

Then in 2004, Hodge’s senior season, the Bulldogs got back on their feet and added freshman John Isner, who also became a four-year All-Amer- ican. “[Hodge] was a great guy in the locker room and took me under his wing right away,” Isner said. “He was bought into the Bulldog culture. Bo was, undoubtedly, the leader of that team.”

The 2004 Bulldogs won the SEC title, Hodge’s third conference title in four years and was a successful end to his collegiate career after a rough 2003 season. After his playing days at Georgia ended, Hodge pursued a professional tennis career. But after a couple of years, Hodge realized that a pro career was not for him.

“Once I realized that I wasn’t going to make millions of dollars, I didn’t want to be one of those journeyman guys or a doubles player,” Hodge said.

Hodge returned to Georgia to complete his degree and graduated in 2008, and Hodge was given an opportunity to help out his old head coach.

“Manny called me the week before NCAA’s and asked me to come,” Hodge said. “So I flew out [to Tulsa, Oklahoma] and wound up getting a ring. I don’t think I had much to do with it but it was pretty exciting.” CONTINUED .... FULL CIRCLE: BO HODGE GOES FROM GEORGIA PLAYER TO COACH AT HIS ALMA MATER

Diaz took a gamble in bringing in another coach during the home stretch of the 2008 national title run. But he was happy with the risk he took in bringing back his former player.

The Bulldogs won the 2008 national championship, and then-Alabama head coach Billy Pate came calling for Hodge. Hodge served as an assis- tant coach at Alabama from 2008-2011 and credits that job for helping him grow on a personal level.

“It was a good first job for me and we did well,” Hodge said. “I had a great time. I also met my wife so that was one of the better things that Ala- bama offered me.”

But after the 2011 season at Alabama, a friend sought out his services and it was not an offer that Hodge could not turn down.

Roddick was the head coach at Oklahoma and needed a new assistant coach.

“Bo had gotten better over the course of a few years at Alabama,” Roddick said. “I realized that there was a young guy out there that I knew well. Bo was a no-brainer for me.”

The Roddick-Hodge duo proved to be a great one, as they led the Sooners’ program to great success in their four seasons together.

“He coached me for a couple years in juniors and my first two years in college,” Hodge said. “He’s a great coach and he’s passionate. He cares about his guys.”

The Sooners won four Big 12 titles and advanced to the NCAA championship match in 2014 and 2015 with Hodge on staff.

It was the vast competitiveness from both coaches that allowed Oklahoma to establish itself among the nation’s elite.

“Our teams, during that time, were probably known to be some of the best competing teams in the country,” Roddick said. “We never walked away from a match thinking that we didn’t compete hard enough.”

Returning home

After the 2015 season, Diaz was in need of a new associate head coach. He knew that Hodge would be interested in the job.

“I just knew Bo would relish the opportunity of coming back home,” Diaz said. “He provides a lot of continuity to our program. He is a great tech- nical coach and is very detailed.”

Just like that, Hodge was back at Georgia to uphold the standards set with a program that has won six NCAA titles.

“I am so excited to be here and I don’t ever want to leave,” Hodge said. “There’s something about the Georgia culture that only the guys that played here and coach here can really understand.”

He left behind the success that he and Roddick had achieved together at Oklahoma. But Roddick was happy for his friend’s chance to go back home.

“Bo is going to be a successful coach in collegiate tennis for a very long time,” Roddick said. “He has had the opportunity to be a head coach but he wants to be at Georgia because that is home for him.”

In Hodge’s first season back with the Bulldogs, the team went 24-5, won the SEC title, and advanced to the Final Four. Thus far, Hodge appears to be a great fit.

He played for Diaz during his collegiate days and can relate to the current players on that front. He also provides an energetic quality of coaching to complement the calm demeanor of Diaz.

“It’s awesome to see him get fired up out there,” freshman Nathan Ponwith said. “He’s been here and can give us personal experience. If I ever need anything, Bo is always the guy I go to.”

Hodge is now is the midst of his second season back with the Bulldogs and his sights are set high for the rest of his Bulldog tenure.

“Hopefully, we can win a national championship with me here,” Hodge said. “And anything less would be kind of a disappointment for me.”

Now that he is home, Hodge may be at his last stop. He might not be. But one thing about Hodge is certain, as he sits at the age of 35 and has yet to have gotten his first collegiate head coaching job:

His journey is far from over. GEORGIA MEN’S TENNIS WINS 2017 SEC TOURNAMENT

Collin Huguley and Anna Glenn Grove | Staff Writers | Red & Black April 30, 2017

The Georgia men’s tennis team competed in a back-and-forth Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship match with Mississippi State on Sunday in Knoxville, Tennessee, coming out as the 2017 SEC Tournament Champions.

Ultimately, Georgia defeated Mississippi State 4-3.

The win relied on No. 61 Emil Reinberg to deliver as he competed against No. 111 Strahinja Rakic on court three.

Georgia has lost a tightly contested doubles point to fall behind 1-0 in the match, but in singles play, Georgia bounced back early.

Sophomore Jan Zielinski began singles play with a two set 6-2, 6-3 victory on court four over Mississippi State’s Niclas Braun. This tied the score at 1-1.

Mississsippi State responded on court No. 6 as Simon Bausch defeated Paul Oosterbaan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to give it a 2-1 lead.

Georgia picked up back-to-back points as Walker Duncan brought the match to a 2-2 tie with his 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Giovanni Oradini on court six. Wayne Montgomery pulled the Bulldogs back ahead, 3-2, winning a third set match against Cutura, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 49 Nathan Ponwith lost in a third set against No. 3 Nuno Borges, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6. This loss realigned the match in a tie, and the final point was left up to Reinberg on three.

Reinberg pulled out the victory in two sets, both ending in tiebreakers. His 7-6, 7-6 victory over Rakic earned Georgia the title as the players rushed on to the court to celebrate alongside Reinberg. 2016-17 GEORGIA TENNIS STATS
