The PADI Dive Instructor Credential is your passport to an international lifestyle of great diving, travelling, meeting new people, and best of all, working in a job you will really love. The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the gateway to becoming a professional PADI . As the name indicates, this course emphasises professional development and learning. The IDC develops the leadership abilities of individuals who already possess instructor-level dive theory knowledge (from their DM course) and role model watermanship and rescue skills. It concentrates on developing your abilities as a professional dive educator and shows you how to implement and apply the PADI system in confined water, classroom and open water environments. Most importantly, you learn how to be confident at providing professional training that is fun but safe for all involved. It’s about life transformations—both yours and those around you.

PADI’s IDC is the core of PADI Instructor training. It consists of two portions, the first is the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the second the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course, both these programs are incorporated in the IDC or you can choose to do each one separately.

The fun part of instructor training is interacting with course participants while creating friendships that continue long after the course concludes.

The challenging part of this course is your personal commitment to the training. The course requires you to complete all the self-study Knowledge Reviews before the course begins and to prepare daily assignments for teaching presentations daily. Organization and dedication are key.

After becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you will be able to conduct the entire range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba Diving up to Divemaster. You may also choose to acquire specialty instructor ratings in areas of interest, such as Digital Underwater Photographer or Enriched Air Diver.

Course Activities

1. Standards Knowledge

You will be given an examination on the PADI standards and procedures, this is an open book exam, and is designed to assess your knowledge of where to obtain information from your PADI instructor manual for a range of courses. If any weaknesses are ascertained then individual guidance and self-study can be recommended.

2. Academic Modules

There will be Academic Presentations given throughout the course. The topics of these presentations are set out in the AI course outline.

3. Orientation to Academic Teaching (Class room)

You will be taken through a workshop situation on PADI’s Academic Teaching and throughout the course will be performing academic presentations. You will be evaluated on each of these presentations. After each evaluation you will be given your score and then a critic of your performance and suggestion of any necessary changes where you could improve.

4. Orientation to Confined Water Teaching (Pool)

You will be shown how to conduct a confined water presentation. In this section you will learn the most commonly encountered problems and practice your confined water teaching. This will involve a briefing, demonstration, problem solving and debriefing. When giving your presentations you will be in charge of a number of “Students” (Instructor Candidates) plus you will have one assistant. You will be expected to brief these “Open Water Students” and conduct your demonstration. The students will then proceed to attempt the assigned skill. Some of these “Students” will be assigned problems, you will be required to recognise these problems, solve or prevent them and debrief afterwards. You will once again be evaluated after each presentation and debriefed afterwards.

5. Orientation to Open Water Teaching (Ocean)

This will be conducted the same as the Confined Water presentations, however minimal demonstration will be given by you and you will start to combine several skills into one presentation. During the course you will be given Diving skills presentations to perform. Further skills from the Advanced and Rescue courses will also get practiced.

6. General

Course Orientation will be conducted at the beginning of the course briefly running through all activities and requirements.
