Trinity Sunday

The Eucharist with the Baptism of Katherine Anne

Sunday 30 May 2021 10.30 Our current service times can be found on the back cover of the order of service.

Welcome to Cathedral We offer a special welcome to Katherine who is to be baptized today, and to her family and friends both in the building and joining us online. The Cathedral clergy are pleased to make arrangements for individual conversations with people, or to hear confessions. Please ring the in Residence mobile (07534 653 333) and we will ensure that one of the clergy will contact you within 24 hours. The notes to kneel, sit, and stand are only suggestions: please feel able to adopt whatever posture you wish.

Notes on worship during Covid Please do not greet each other with a handshake before or after the service. Similarly, we ask you not to share the peace physically with anyone outside your household. We will not take a collection during the service. You are asked to put your gift into a collection box before or after the service. During Coronavirus we follow the pre-Reformation practice in the Cathedral. The President of the Eucharist alone receives from the cup, as a representative of all the faithful. Please leave space between you and others as you walk forward and back to receive Holy Communion. We ask everyone to use the hand gel provided immediately before they receive. At the end of the service, we ask you to leave the Cathedral by the Parker Transept, moving pew by pew. We particularly request you to take your service booklet away with you, as this is safer for the Cathedral staff.

Music during the service At this service the Choral Scholars sing the Communion Service in F by Harold Darke, 1988-1976. We welcome Ian Seddon as our organist.

Practicalities, accessibility and sustainability You are kindly requested to refrain from making any audio or visual recording of any part of this service without the written permission of the Acting of Sheffield. Our service sheet is printed on paper which comes from sustainable forests.

The Gathering

We stand as the procession enters. The Choral Scholars sing:

Hanover

O worship the King all glorious above; O gratefully sing his power and his love; our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendour and girded with praise.

O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunder clouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

The earth with its store of wonders untold, almighty, thy power hath founded of old; hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? it breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust and feeble as frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end! our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend.

O measureless might, ineffable love, while angels delight to hymn thee above, thy humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall sing to thy praise.

William Kethe, fl.1559-1594, Robert Grant, 1779-1838

President God our Creator, we thank you for the wonder of new life and for the mystery of human love. We give thanks for all whose support and skill surround and sustain the beginning of life. As Jesus knew love and discipline within a human family, may Katherine grow in strength and wisdom. As Mary knew the joys and pains of motherhood, give her parents your sustaining grace and love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

We stand as the Choral Scholars sing the Gloria:

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. The Liturgy of the Word

The New Testament Reading: Romans 8. 12 - 17

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Reader Let us wait upon the Lord; All in whose word is our hope.

We keep silence together.

We stand for the reading of the Gospel.

The Holy Gospel: John 3. 1 - 17

Choral Scholars Alleluia, alleluia. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty.’ Alleluia, alleluia.

Priest The Lord be with you All And also with you.

Priest Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory be to you, O Lord.

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? ‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Priest This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

The Sermon The Revd Catherine Staziker

We remain seated.

The Liturgy of Baptism

The Decision

The President addresses Katherine through her parents and godparents.

President In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:

Do you turn to Christ? Parents and I turn to Christ. Godparents

Do you repent of your sins? Parents and I repent of my sins. Godparents

Do you renounce evil? Parents and I renounce evil. Godparents

The Signing with the Cross

The President makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of Katherine, saying:

President Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of the cross.

President Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. All Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

President May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. All Amen.

8

We stand as the Choral Scholars sing the following hymn, during which the President, Katherine and her family move towards the font. The congregation are invited to stand and turn to face the font.

Gartan Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all who love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

The Prayer over the water

President Praise God who made heaven and earth, All who keeps his promise for ever.

President Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. President Father, we give you thanks and praise for your gift of water in creation; for your Spirit, sweeping over the waters, bringing light and life; for your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, baptized in the river Jordan. We bless you for your new creation, brought to birth by water and the Spirit, and for your grace bestowed upon us your children, washing away our sins. May your holy and life-giving Spirit move upon these waters. Restore through them the beauty of your creation, and bring those who are baptized to new birth in the family of your Church. Drown sin in the waters of judgement, anoint your children with power from on high, and make them one with Christ in the freedom of your kingdom. For all might, majesty, dominion and power are yours, now and for ever. All Amen. 9

The Profession of Faith

President Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess, together with Katherine, the faith of the Church.

President Do you believe and trust in God the Father? All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. President Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. President Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? All I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Baptism

The President pours the water of Baptism on Katherine, saying:

President Katherine Anne, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

President May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that with the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. All Amen.

As the Choral Scholars sing the following hymn, the President, Katherine and her family return to their seats. Gartan Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. 10

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all who love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. Atromriug indiu niurt tren Patrick of Ireland (attributed), c386-c460 Translated: Cecil Frances Alexander (née Humphreys), 1818-1895

We kneel or sit.

The Prayers of Intercession

The President introduces the prayers, after each petition:

Intercessor Lord, in your mercy, All hear our prayer .

Intercessor Merciful Father, All Accept these prayers, for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

We stand.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

The peace of the risen Christ be always with you, All and also with you.

We stand. 11

The Eucharistic Prayer

President The Lord be with you All and also with you.

President Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

President Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. President It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And so with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory:

Choral Scholars Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

12

President We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

President Jesus Christ is Lord: All Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world.

President Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary, , Saint Paul and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever All Amen.

We keep silence. We kneel or sit.

13

The Lord’s Prayer

President Rejoicing in God’s new creation, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

President We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Choral Scholars O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

The Giving of Communion

President God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. All Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

14

During communion the Choral Scholars sing:

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea. Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, Hallelujah!, Hallelujah! Blessed Trinity!

Words: Reginald Heber, 1783–1826 Music: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1840-1893

Making a Spiritual Communion

The House of Bishops suggests that those who are unable to come to church, or who are unable to receive Holy Communion, follow the teaching of the Book of Common Prayer, and make what is known as a “Spiritual Communion”.

In making our Communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. Give thanks for the saving death and resurrection of Jesus and ask him to be with you now, and say:

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

after a prayer of St Richard of Chichester

15

The Prayer after Communion

President Let us pray.

All Amen.

All Living God, Jesus calls his followers to seek first your Kingdom. Renew us as we make your love known; Release us to share freely together in mission; and Rejuvenate us to be fruitful in your service. Give us courage, wisdom and compassion, that strengthened with the grace of the Holy Spirit, we may, as the , both flourish and grow through Christ our Lord. Amen.
