Being excellent models in evolutionary ecology, lizard populations isolated by ecological reasons are also relevant for conservation because of their vulner- ability to extinction. Both aspects are linked because the ecological and evolu- tionary traits need to be known for developing conservation strategies. Here were report two cases, the lacertids Podarcis carbonelli and Lacerta schreiberi, in which a combined methodology is being applied. Both species, endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and with Atlantic affinities, display a continuous distribution in the northwest which becomes fragmented southwards. -

The Red List of Italian Animals
Home / Life/ Special Reports The Red List of Italian animals Biodiversity in Italy Italy has a rich biodiversity due to its distinctive geographic, climatic and historical characteristics. In particular, there is an enormous variety of endemic species, i.e. those plant and animal species that can be found exclusively in a given territory. In Italy, we can find approximately one third of the European animals and one half of the plants, even though its surface area is not so vast, when compared to the whole of Europe. The Italian sea has an even more rich biodiversity, because most of the species that are typical of the Mediterranean Sea live in its waters. All this makes Italy a “hot spot” for biodiversity, which is recognized all over the world. The Red List The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is an international organization that is concerned with the conservation of biodiversity and has introduced the Red Lists. The Red Lists, therefore, are able to assess the risk of extinction of the species, and can, consequently carry out the correct actions to contrast the factors that threaten the loss of biodiversity. 672 species of vertebrates (576 terrestrial and 96 marine) have been assessed, out of which 6 species have become extinct in recent times. It has been assessed that 28% of the species are threatened with extinction, 138 terrestrial species and 23 marine species). Instead 50% of the species of Italian vertebrates are not in imminent risk of extinction. According to recent studies it appears that the marine species are declining more rapidly than the terrestrial species. -

The chapter is focused on a diversity of Mediterranean amphibians and reptiles, discussing major threats to the species and its conservation status. There are 117 amphibians, of which 80 (68%) are endemic and 398 reptiles, of which 216 (54%) are endemic distributed throughout the Basin. While the species diversity increases in the north and west for amphibians, the reptile diversity increases from north to south and from west to east direction. Amphibians are almost twice as threatened (29%) as reptiles (14%). Habitat loss and degradation, pollution, invasive/alien species, unsustainable use, and persecution are major threats to the species. The important conservation actions should be directed to sustainable management measures and legal protection of endangered species and their habitats, all for the future of Mediterranean biodiversity. Here, we investigate intraspecific morphological variability in this species, considering both biometric and pholidotic traits. Our results reveal local patterns of variation in total body size and scalation, but also indicate the existence of gradual, geographically structured morphological variation when size- independent biometry is considered. Total body size is the main factor determining variation across our sample, but this seems to be the result of within-population variability in this trait and is not geographically structured. The southern isolated populations seem highly differentiated in morphological terms, a pattern that also corresponds to singular environmental conditions and distinctive genetic variation, and should therefore be the focus of special attention for future investigation and conservation. Population heterogeneity and conservation of the Aeolian wall lizard, Podarcis raffonei Massimo Capula Museo Civico di Zoologia, Via Ulisse Aldrovandi 18 – I-00197 Roma (Italy); e-mail: [email protected] The conservation status of Podarcis raffonei, native to the Aeolian Islands (north-east of Sicily, Tyrrhenian Sea), is assessed analyzing its genetic struc- ture and evidencing factors affecting the survival of the species. Genetic vari- ation in the species is quite low and genetic subdivision is high, as compared to other lacertid lizards. The four remaining populations of P. raffonei are under severe threat from the effects of habitat alteration, interspecific com- petition, collecting and trade, very low population density and inbreeding, population fragmentation, and apparent loss of genetic variation. Introduction Podarcis raffonei (Mertens 1952) is a lacertid lizard endemic to the Aeolian Islands (north-east of Sicily, Thyrrhenian Sea) (Fig. 1). The species is genetically and mor- phologically related to P. wagleriana Gistel 1868, a lizard endemic to Sicily, Egadi Islands and Stagnone Islands (Capula 1994a, b; Capula et al. 2001). The Aeolian Islands are also inhabited by Podarcis sicula (Rafinesque 1810), but the occurrence of this species in the Archipelago is probably due to introduction by humans in proto- historical times (Capula 1994a, Corti & Lo Cascio 1999, Lo Cascio & Corti 2004). P. sicula occurs on all large islands as well as on some islets of the Aeolian Archipelago (Capula 1992, 1993, 1994a; Corti et al. 1998; Corti & Lo Cascio 1999), while P. -
