About 30 members and guests spent a very enjoyable and informative day at Sid Hollier’s Brookway Farm near Dorchester on a bright but blustery day on 30 April to learn about showing techniques and have a go at showing cattle in an atmosphere that was hopefully slight more relaxed than the show ring! Our master judge for the day was well known Devon and Charolais breeder Mike Yeandle. He, alongside panel judge Steve Gray talked about the judge’s perspective on cattle showing and gave plenty of hints and tips on how to get the best from your cattle in the showring. Steve gave a clipping and trim- ming demonstration and then let people loose with the clippers to see how well they could produce an animal for the show ring. There were some very impressive results! After a lovely roast lunch we were back on the farm in the afternoon to have a go at a simulated show class which really gave people the opportunity to understand how a showing class works and what you need to do to catch the judge’s eye.

The day was a great success and huge thanks go to Sid and Anne who made us all very welcome and had put in such a lot of hard work to prepare for the workshop. Thanks also go to Mike and Steve - quite a double act! - and to the members and friends to came along for the day. Issue 72 Longhorn Newsletter Page 3 BULL SELECTION WORKSHOP 28 MAY 2011

The Bull Selection Workshop for 2011 was held at David and Angela Blockley’s Southfield Farm, Drighlington, Bradford on another blustery day! The Blockleys had prepared four Junior and two Senior bulls ready for members and after introductions everyone got the little grey cells working by having a go at placing the Junior bulls in order of merit. The bulls were judged tied up and then walked around the yard (which resulted in a lot of minds being changed!) before final placings were decided upon. A couple of members were asked to place the animals and give their reasons before our master judge for the day, Mr Stephen Priestley, put the animals in his order. Needless to say there were one or two who didn’t agree with the placings! There were general discussions on young bull purchase and management as well as infor- mation on selecting senior bulls as replacement stock bulls.

The day ended with a trip round the rest of the Southfield herd.

The Blockleys very kindly provided us with wonderful hospitality and the day was a great success.

Page 4 Longhorn Newsletter Issue 72 VISIT TO CORNWALL 30 SEPTEMBER - 2 OCTOBER 2011

Continuing the Society’s desire to ensure all our members are in- cluded in Society activities we are planning a trip to the West of Corn- wall in the Autumn. We have a small but dedicated band of members in Cornwall who would love to see us!

The trip will be around the St Ives and Penzance area and will feature Longhorns (of course) as well as interesting local attractions.

Let me know if you are interested .

SOCIETY AGM 4 - 6 NOVEMBER 2011

The Society AGM will be held in North Yorkshire this year, with our hosts being Alex Smith of the Overdale herd and John Harrison of the Settrington herd. We will be staying at the Hackness Grange Hotel near Scarborough - a lovely country house Hotel that we will probably fill so we’ll have exclusive use.

Booking forms will be in the next newsletter, but put the dates in your diary now!

Follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!

The Society has recently set up a Twitter account: (www.twitter.com/longhornoffice ). A number of Longhorn members already use Twitter and Facebook to promote themselves and their products using social media, including Meridian Meats, Christmas Hill Farm Shop and Offley Hoo Farms. It is an increasingly popular and cost effective method of communication. If you are also on Twitter then please follow the Society for up to date information and day-to-day goings on, or if you are on Facebook then ‘like us’ at www.facebook/longhorncattlesociety.com. WORCESTER LONGHORNS AT 1,850GNS

The Longhorn Cattle Society’s spring Show and Sale at Worcester again held its own with plenty of buying support from new and established breeders although quality was at the very top of everyone’s shopping list!

Top call of the day went to Bernard Llewellyn’s first prize bull Carreg Herby a Bulford Freddy son that had won a host of prizes including Breed Champion, Shropshire & West Midlands and Re- serve Breed Champion, Pembroke 2009, he was secured at 1,850gns by G. Townend, Tewkes- bury, Glos. Other bulls in demand included John & Joshua Brigg’s Gorse Quantum a 3rd prize winner on the day reaching 1,700gns to R Jones, Penrhos, Raglan, Monmouth.

Females were a selective trade but as always no shortage of competitive bidding for quality animals. This fact was underlined when Charnwood Jewel a maiden heifer from John Warner’s based herd having won Overall Champion reached 1,500gns to M. Lawrence, Basingstoke, Hampshire. Another maiden heifer from Charnwood having taken 2 nd and Reserve overall champion to her half sister sold at 1,000gns to B. Facon, Banbury, Oxon.

A long trip from Berwick on Tweed for Peter Close was well rewarded when four maiden heifers from his noted Fishwick herd sold to a brisk demand at 1,250gns, 980gns, 700gns (x2), all being secured to go to a new herd being established at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire for Mr M.A. Lomas.

Cows and calves were well followed peaking at 1,350gns for Frog Lane Ileana and her heifer calf bred by C. Martin and sold by Mike Shearstone, Tanfield to GVP Ltd, Tetbury, Glos. In calf cows reached a top of 1,150gns for a first prize winner Carreg Divine from Bernard Llewellyn’s Llandeilo based herd, she was full sister to Carreg Cennen sold for a Breed Record at 8,400gns, and was taken by M. Wheeler as a foundation cow for his new herd at Kings Stanley, Glouces- ter.

The Third Annual Northern Sale for members of the Longhorn Cattle Society attracted its largest entry to date numbering some 70 head at its recent event at Beeston Castle Auction, Cheshire and for the third year in succession every animal forward on the day found a buyer.

Top price was 2000 gns which was achieved on two occasions. The female selling at this price was Treverton Justice, a May 09 open heifer sired by Gorse Morrisman and consigned by Rachael Heard of Welford, Northamptonshire selling to M A Lomas of Eye Kettleby, Melton Mowbray. Other senior heifers sold up to 1400 gns for the April 09 born Heronbrook Jayde from James Winnington of Church Broughton, Derby selling to Peter Wild of Shaw, Oldham and an- other from Rachael Heard selling at 1380 gns to MA Lomas.

Cows with calves at foot sold on a very fast trade with the top two prices being achieved for animals from the Kirklan Herd of Her Majesty’s Prison Services at Kirkham, Lancashire. Their Newbrook Hearnish with March born heifer calf at foot by Blackbrook Quidditch sold for 1480 gns to Rob Swain of Market Drayton and their Oxlane Imogen with December born bull calf at foot sold for 1450 gns to N Hughes of Silloth, Cumbria. Another outfit, Ash Tree Henrietta with March born heifer calf by Blackbrook Quarterback consigned by James Winnington sold for 1300 gns to JM Grant, Easingwold, York.

Junior heifers sold to 900 gns twice both for yearlings consigned by M Pumphrey & Co of Dal- beattie, Dumfries and Galloway and both were daughters of Bollin Eugene. The elder, the April 10 born Clonyard Bonxie sold to Mr. Hughes, Silloth and the younger Clonyard Bombycilla sold to Malcolm Adams of Bangor on Dee.

The sale concluded with the entry of bulls and the top registered seller was Au Naturel Jacob, consigned by Messrs Carden and selling to Mr JM Grant for 1500gns.
