Annual Report 2011-2012 Thank you for helping us Reduce Hunger and Increase Awareness. More than Food. Hope. Message from the President & CEO and the Chairman of the Board of Directors For the past several years, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance has needed to grow by leaps and bounds to keep pace with the unprecedented need that has affected one in five families in Arizona - including one in seven seniors and, tragically, one in four Arizona children. Hunger has been, and continues to be, a serious problem in the Grand Canyon State. In the span of two years, the food bank grew from distributing 43.7 million pounds of food to 73.4 million pounds in a single year. Operations housed in one warehouse in Phoenix are now spread throughout a campus of three buildings. The extra space for the Community Kitchen, Kids Cafe and agency shopping programs came just in time, as the recession hit with devastating effects and increasing demand for the food bank’s services. In 2011-12, the numbers of people needing us continued to grow. But stabilized and dealing with “the new normal,” St. Mary’s was able to implement operational efficiencies and creatively expand programs to better serve the community. The food bank focused on strengthening the composition of agency partners, adding mobile pantry distributions to reach poverty-impacted neighborhoods and expanding food resourcing directly to the food rich farms, dairies and orchards in our state. Each time the number of families in need increased, you have been there with another dollar, another can of food and another hour of your time that said, “Here are the resources. Help as many people as you can.” It is because of you that we have been able to reach out to those who need it most. So it is with pride and gratitude that we present the 2011-12 Annual Report of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. And along with making sure that 95 percent of contributions flow directly into programs and keeping our costs down, we have been recognized by others for doing what we do best. For the 10th time, St. Mary’s was awarded a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the preeminent non-profit evaluator in the United States. St. Mary’s was also named a Best Place to Work in Phoenix, while AZ Business magazine and BestCompaniesAZ not only named St. Mary’s to its top 40 list of Most Admired Companies, but also singled out the Food Bank for a spotlight award for Workplace Culture.     114 Australian Religion Studies Review Film Review: The Passion of the Christ (Director Mel Gibson 2004) Ecce Vir: Conceit, Homophobia and Irony in Gibson's Passion Michael Carden, University ofQueensland My favourite Jesus film is Pier Paolo Pasolini's "The Gospel According to St. Matthew." Mel Gibson's Passion shows that it still takes a gay Marxist to make an effective movie about Jesus. Passion hit the cinemas on a tide of controversy. Arguments raged over the film's violence, possible anti-Semitism and the question of Gibson's own traditionalist Catholic perspective. This latter point particularly bemused me, as the film seemed most eagerly expected and promoted by conservative evangelical Protestant communities. I am not a fan of Gibson as an actor and have not seen most of his films, but, as a biblical scholar, I knew that I had to see the film. Furthermore, as I regard most Jesus films as being too sanitized in representing his execution, I was interested in seeing a film that claimed to show it as it was. Finally the film offered the rare prospect of being played in Latin and Aramaic. However, like the Tower of Babel, the film failed in this conceit, which was symptomatic of a deeper problem. Playing the film in Aramaic and Latin irked me as an attempt to conscript a documentary sense to what was on screen, to make the screen into a window into 30 CE Jerusalem. No film, no text is a simple window onto an unmediated and uninterpreted reality and Gibson's film had not only to harmonize the differing gospel accounts but was also partly based on Katherine Emmerich's 19th century visionary accounts.

The listing price for the 16,000 square-foot building located at 7501 Belinder Avenue in Prairie Village is $1.4 million. The Reform congrega- tion purchased the building in the sum- mer of 2005 from Zion Lutheran Church for $1.1 million. Nadine Gordon, president of the 90-member congregation, said the board of directors decided to put the building up for sale because “it no longer meets our needs.” She declined to make any further comments regarding the sale or the congregation’s future. Kol Ami is being represented by Da- vid Block and Max Kosoglad of Block & Company, Inc., the exclusive agent for the building and property. Bisogna decidere il posto degli oggetti, il colore e lo stile. Ciò che è interessante è che non si sa come fare. Imparate ad ascoltare quello che dice la stanza. Ogni luogo vuole una certa forma e una certa sistemazione. Non si può averne una conoscenza globale né razionale. È come se in ogni posto lo spirito del luogo parlasse una propria lingua, che voi dovete imparare utilizzando le vostre risorse. Bisogna quindi lasciarsi impregnare dalle caratteristiche del luogo: volume, luci, superfici, materiali, trama. E poi procedere a tentoni. Una buona sistemazione non nasce mai da una prima intuizione. Bisogna procedere per approssimazione, passo dopo passo, per tentativi ed errori. Saper tacere e dimenticare, riscoprire, agire al di là delle parole e delle rappresentazioni. Non completamente in modo teorico e astratto. Posate un colore e gli altri tutt'intorno si trasformano. Mettete un mobile e i volumi cambiano, talvolta anche i colori e le luci. Ogni cosa è sempre in stretto rapporto con il resto. Per questo non dovete lasciarvi ingannare, quando non conoscete esattamente l'itinerario da seguire. L'esperienza obbedisce a regole ogni volta diverse. Voi dovete lasciar fare e agire al tempo stesso. Siete voi al centro delle manovre, ma avrete successo se non im¬porrete nulla. D'altro canto le conseguenze di questa relativa passività saranno in ragione di quello che siete. Ciò che il luogo suggerisce, ciò che esige su misura non è evidentemente identico per tutte le persone: il luogo è la guida, ma siete voi il conducente e non qualcun altro.

Biblical Scholarship and the Passion Surrounding The Passion of the Christ Abstract The release of the film has engendered a spectrum of fervent responses, becoming in itself atheological event shaped by merchandising, media, and audience reception. For a long while, images from a movie will inform the lens through which many of our students and the general public read the Gospels, as well as influence the ways in which some Jews and Christians view one another. Reactions to the film will differ markedly, magnifying and possibly reifying the various theological stances of audience members. Since much of the furor revolves around issues of interpretation of Scripture, biblical scholars can provide informed and thoughtful contributions to the debate. In other words, the release of The Passion, as well as other films with eligiousr themes, provides a valuable opportunity for raising the level of public discourse on religion, enabling us to foster careful inquiry in our classrooms, writings, churches and synagogues.
