A documentary normally is shot over years and then edited but in this case you see live action of varied animals at different places and time. -
Greening Wildlife Documentary’, in Libby Lester and Brett Hutchins (Eds) Environmental Conflict and the Media, New York: Peter Lang
Morgan Richards (forthcoming 2013) ‘Greening Wildlife Documentary’, in Libby Lester and Brett Hutchins (eds) Environmental Conflict and the Media, New York: Peter Lang. GREENING WILDLIFE DOCUMENTARY Morgan Richards The loss of wilderness is a truth so sad, so overwhelming that, to reflect reality, it would need to be the subject of every wildlife film. That, of course, would be neither entertaining nor ultimately dramatic. So it seems that as filmmakers we are doomed either to fail our audience or fail our cause. — Stephen Mills (1997) Five years before the BBC’s Frozen Planet was first broadcast in 2011, Sir David Attenborough publically announced his belief in human-induced global warming. “My message is that the world is warming, and that it’s our fault,” he declared on the BBC’s Ten O’Clock News in May 2006. This was the first statement, both in the media and in his numerous wildlife series, in which he didn’t hedge his opinion, choosing to focus on slowly accruing scientific data rather than ruling definitively on the causes and likely environmental impacts of climate change. Frozen Planet, a seven-part landmark documentary series, produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and largely co-financed by the Discovery Channel, was heralded by many as Attenborough’s definitive take on climate change. It followed a string of big budget, multipart wildlife documentaries, known in the industry as landmarks1, which broke with convention to incorporate narratives on complex environmental issues such as habitat destruction, species extinction and atmospheric pollution. David Attenborough’s The State of the Planet (2000), a smaller three-part series, was the first wildlife documentary to deal comprehensively with environmental issues on a global scale. -

Communication Strategies for Chinese Documentaries from High-Context to Low-Context Culture: a Comparative Study of “Wild China” of BBC and CCTV Version
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, January 2021, Vol. 11, No. 1, 33-39 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2021.01.005 D DAVID PUBLISHING Communication Strategies for Chinese Documentaries from High-context to Low-context Culture: A Comparative Study of “Wild China” of BBC and CCTV Version FU Si-jing City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China As an important means of cultural transmission, documentaries are a powerful tool to make known the five thousand years of Chinese civilization to people all over the world. The “Wild China” of BBC version, popular among the great majority of overseas audience, serves as a successful carrier of Chinese culture export. Based on the theory of low-context and high-context culture, this paper uses the method of text analysis and focuses on the study of the texts in the Chinese and English versions of “Wild China” and explores the differences in the texts in terms of content and rhythm. The purpose of this study is to avoid cultural misunderstanding and optimize communication effect. Findings of this study show that against the background of low-context (English) and high-context (Chinese) culture, the English version has a good sense of rhythm, uses rhetoric for vivid description, expresses ideas directly, and provides explanation for phenomena through narrating or telling a story. But Chinese version has plainer descriptions, uses more euphemistic or abstract words, analyzes phenomena in less detail and narrates more formally. So, it is suggested that in translating texts into English, concepts need to be made accessible, logical and direct with more explanation, more rhetoric, more objective evaluation, and less pursuit of artistic abstraction. -
Wild India, Nat Geo Wild
BROADCAST BLOG Working with local crews can take a production to the next level, writes Icon Films’ Harry Marshall. Wild India, Nat Geo Wild 13 February, 2012 Wild India was completed from start to finish in just nine months. For a three-part blue chip natural history series that took into multiple locations and events – many of which were very season specific - this was little short of miraculous. The only reason we were able to do this was down to Icon’s 21 years of experience working in India and critically, working with Indian film teams in the field. It was truly an Anglo-Indian collaboration and although it would seem obvious to work like this, it’s surprising how few Indians are ever used on international wildlife films that are shot in India. I think this is a wasted opportunity for lots of reasons, the least of which is the long haul travel. There were three British members of the team working from Bristol. The series director Duncan Chard and his AP Sam Mansfield. There was also Brendan McGinty, that rare beast – a cameraman equally comfortable shooting wildlife on a long lens as he is filming a fashion event on the catwalk. His job was to bring the fresher more contemporary feel which National Geographic Wild had asked us to brand the series. In the eight-strong local Indian team we had two principle cameramen: Sandesh Kadur and Sarvanakumar Salem – or Sara for short. Sara has worked with Icon on a dozen films since 1995 when we made a show called Elephant Men. -

It's Our Anniversary & You Have 50 Reasons to Join
GALÁPAGOS CELEBRATING YEARS 50 IT’S OUR ANNIVERSARY & YOU HAVE 50 REASONS TO JOIN US! 1 REASON IS FREE AIR TM DEAR TRAVELER, image from 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of my father’s opening up of blessing tourism to the Galápagos Islands. It was another pioneering ceremony milestone for the man who is credited as the ‘father of eco- tourism.’ An explorer and a conservationist, he cared deeply about how bringing visitors to this special place could work to conserve this unbelievably rich environment. And now, five decades later we still believe that to be true. It is important for people to experience this unique place, to be inspired by it, to have fun in it, and to become an ambassador for its preservation. So I fervently hope you choose to take some of your valuable time to venture here. It’s not that far, yet oh-so-different from anything you have ever experienced. And, I hope that we will make a convincing case on the following pages that when you decide to go, you should choose to go with us. Our team had some fun of their own compiling 50 reasons to experience the Galápagos during our 50th, which I hope you will also find fun and inspiring. So please give it a look, it is a place for all ages, whether 8 or 80, with a lot to see, feel and be touched by in a multitude of ways. I know, as I’ve been here at least 50 times and brought friends and my four kids on numerous expeditions. -

WILD, STRANGE & WONDERFUL FIFTY YEARS GALÁPAGOS IN GALÁPAGOS AND YOU GET EVERYTHING IT HAS TO OFFER FREE AIR TOO SVEN OLOF-LINDBLAD A LETTER TO TRAVELERS ⊲ CELEBRATING YEARS 50ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ISLANDER AND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENDEAVOUR II | 2017-18 TM In 1967, I landed on South Plaza Island in the Galápagos Islands with no idea what to really expect. As we anchored our boat, there was a cacophony of sounds emanating from the island– raucous bird cries and melodic barking, if there is such a thing. With almost uncontrollable excitement, we boarded our dinghy to go ashore. The landing was covered with sea lions who rose up to stare at us as if they had never before seen a human. They barked enthusiastically, and some hurled themselves into the water surrounding our craft, leaping, twisting in the water in what seemed like intense glee. Later, I would learn that indeed these sea lions had seen very few, if any, humans. And their display of curiosity made that conclusion undeniable. As we explored the island, we were immediately struck by one powerful observation: Not a single creature displayed even the slightest hint of fear as we walked by. Boobies on nests simply stared at us as we passed within a few feet; land iguanas just kept eating their cactus fruit. The sea lions, particularly the young ones, tried to approach us to investigate the new creatures. It was enthralling beyond description, beautiful, exciting and, on many occasions, just downright comical. This was clearly paradise for anyone who enjoys the company of wild animals going about their business. -
