Ranjan Ramanayake Member of Parliament for the Electoral District of Gampaha has ceased to be a Member of Parliament in terms of Article 66(d) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The Hon. Ranjan Ramanayake was convicted by the Supreme Court on 12th January 2021 for the offence of contempt of court punishable under Article 105 (3) of the Constitution and was sentenced to a term of 4 years rigorous imprisonment. The conviction by the Supreme Court attracted the provisions of the Article 66 (d) of the Constitution which reads that “ The seat of a Member shall become vacant if he becomes subject to any disqualification specified in Article 89 or 91. The Article 89 (d) of the Constitution goes on to say that “ No person shall be qualified to be an elector at an election of the President, or of the Members of Parliament or to vote at any Referendum if he is subject to any of the following disqualifications, namely, if he is serving or has during the period of seven years immediately preceding completed serving of a sentence of imprisonment ( 1 by what ever name called ) for a term not less than six months imposed after conviction by any court for an offence punishable with imprisonment for a term not less than two years or is under sentence of death or is serving or has during the period of seven years immediately preceding completed the serving of a sentence of imprisonment for a term not less than six months awarded in lieu of execution of such sentence ; Provided that if any person disqualified under this paragraph is granted a free pardon such disqualification shall cease from the date on which the pardon is granted.

    29 complaints against newspapers PCCS, Colombo, 07.06.2007 The Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka had received 29 complaints against newspapers during the first quarter of this year of which the commission had dealt with. A statement by the commission on its activities is as follows: The Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL) was established three and a half years ago (Oct. 2003) by the media to resolve disputes between the press, and the public speedily and cost-effectively, for both, the press and the public, outside the statutory Press Council and the regular courts system. We hope that the PCCSL has made things easier for editors and journalists to dispose of public complaints on matters published in your newspapers, and at no costs incurred in the retention of lawyers etc. In a bid to have more transparency in the work of the Dispute Resolution Council of the PCCSL, the Commission decided to publish the records of the complaints it has received. In Ethiopia, the killing of popular Oromo singer Hachalu Hundessa sparked a wave of protests, which left over 200 dead. In Sudan, the government struggled to advance the transitional agenda amid continuing delays in nalising a peace accord with rebel groups and escalating deadly violence in Darfur. In South Sudan, intercommunal violence surged in the east, while the partnership between President Salva Kiir and VP Riek Machar suffered setbacks. In Mali, clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces in the capital Bamako killed at least 14 people. Looking ahead to August, CrisisWatch warns of three conict risks. In Libya, Egypt took preparatory steps toward a direct military intervention, which could escalate the war dramatically, while heavy clashes in Yemen’s north between the government and the Huthis could intensify.
