Catalogue of Pictures in the Possession of Beriah Botfield, Esq I WV^ X^ u^^'jv CATALOGUE OF PICTURES IX THE POSSESSION OF BEKIAH BOTFIELD, ESQ. AT NORTON HALL. LONDON: 1848. The present Collection has been formed with the sole in- tention of adding to the comforts of an English home the additional luxury of walls hung round ^nth thoughts." Tliis Catalogue has been printed with the ^^ew of pre- ser\'ing those minute particulars, which, if not recorded at the time, are lost for ever. Much that seems trivial to us may be interesting to our descendants, and property of whatever kind is not the less valuable because it may he associated with its traditions. Elaborate descriptions are ])ut imperfect vehicles for con- veying ideas of pictorial representations. No language, how- ever glowing, can paint with sufficient distinctness the impres- sions conveyed to tlie mind l)y the best works of the Old Masters. All should be said which is necessary for the iden- tification of the Painting, but beyond this the busy power of the imagination may be happily substituted for any force of words. Whenever the Paintings are on any other material than canvass, the fact has been noticed, and the figures annexed to each denote the heighth and width of the frame, shewing the space occupied by the Picture on the wall. PREFACE. The Dictionaries of Painters by Bryan^ Pilkington and Ticozzi have furnished the dates affixed to the name of each Artist. " Picture of a favourite Hunting Horse by Lord Chve^s Arabian, nearly fifteen hands high, 22 years old last spring, the property of Beriah Botfield, has been in his possession since he was four years old and hunted every season and never was beat. He went a Fox Chace in Leicestershire, wdtli Mr. Meynell's hounds in November 17^^^^^ of 55 minutes with a very large field of horses, and himself and two more were the only horses in at the death of the Fox, from which he got the title of the Shropshire Poney. This picture was taken Dec. 1st I7^^')y by Mr. Boultbee, but not being a good like- ness he painted him again July 28, 1803, when he painted the grey horse, and mare at Ditton. He was l)red by Lord Powis and bought by Thomas Botfield at three years old for Eleven Guineas and a half from a man who lived at a place called Ness Clilf between Shrewsbury and Oswestry.

Ralph Pugh was the principal founder of the Records Branch of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, which in 1967 became the Wiltshire Record Society. Editing the first volume himself he remained general editor and honorary secretary of the Branch until 1953. From that date until his death he was continuously Chairman of the Branch, and President of the Society. Three further volumes were edited by himself, and in every other one he took a close personal interest.

It adds to understanding of how individuals and communities reflected Enlightenment aspirations or carried the mantle of ‘improvement’ and thereby contributes to the debate on the establishment of regional Enlightenment. The acquisition of philosophical knowledge merged into the cultural ethos of the period and its utilitarian characteristics were to influence the onset of Industrial Revolution but Shropshire was essentially a rural location. The thesis examines how those progressive tendencies manifested themselves in that local setting.

It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.

In the present instance ^^^ more than thirty years had passed between Laing's demise and the time when I was asked to under- V take his memoir. I could yet, however, claim to "^ have had the privilege of his acquaintance and to f4\<\ have retained a vivid impression of his personality. The request was therefore complied with, though not without hesitation, because the undertaking was obviously attended with difficulties due to the lapse of time and the uncertainty as to the ade- J quacy of any biographic materials that might be available. These difficulties were, however, gradu- ally surmounted as the work proceeded. Abstract Wrought-iron manufacture in Shropshire is studied over three centuries, encompassing changes in technology arising from the use of vegetable and subsequently mineral fuel. It describes the charcoal-using forges of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, discussing their rural locations on tributaries of the River Severn, and their principal market in the Midland manufacturing district. Comparison with other ironworking districts establishes that the industry had a regional rather than a national base. Early processes using coal and coke are discussed, in particular the patent awarded to Thomas and George Cranage, two Shropshire workmen, in 1766, before the adoption of the puddling process in the late eighteenth century. The industry in the nineteenth century is discussed with reference to the market and workplace structure, examining their influence on the technology of iron production.
