Logan Lerman plays a teenager named Charlie, who writes to an unnamed friend, and these letters document his trials, tribulies, and triumphs as he spent his first year in high school. The film depicts his struggles with him, unknown to him, post-traumatic stress disorder, as he goes through his journey in high school making new friends. The film's main cast also stars Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Mae Whitman, Kate Walsh, Dylan McDermott, Nina Dobrev, Johnny Simmons, Erin Wilhelmi, Melanie Lynskey, Paul Rudd and Joan Cusack. Chbosky had always intended to convert novels into films, but was in no hurry to do so. He was reluctant to sell the rights to the film to anyone, but eventually sold them to Mr. Mudd Productions as long as they allowed him to write and direct the film. Filming began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May 2011 and lasted about fifty days. It is one of three films from John Malkovich, Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith's Mr. Mudd Productions that feature struggling teenagers; the other two are Ghost World and Juno. [5] [6] The Perks of Being a Wallflower premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2012 and was released in the United States on September 21, 2012 by Summit Entertainment. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for Chbosky's screenplay and director, acting (especially that of Lerman, Watson and Miller), the soundtrack, which made its themes and emotional weight. It was also a box office success, collecting $33.4 million on a budget of $13 million, and receiving several awards, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Film, two Critics' Choice Film Awards nominations, including Best Screenplay for Chbosky and the 2013 GLAAD Media Award for Best Film – widely practiced. In 1992, Charlie, who suffered from failed clinical depression from childhood, was discharged from a mental health organisation. Charlie is annoyed about starting first year of high school; he is shy and has difficulty making friends, but connects with his English teacher, Mr. Anderson. Charlie meets two seniors, Sam and his step-brother Patrick, at a football game and they invite him to a party. Charlie accidentally eats a grass brownie, gets tall and reveals to Sam that years ago, his best friend committed suicide. He also goes to Patrick and Brad, the high school quarterback, kissing. Patrick tells Charlie that Brad is closed, so Charlie agrees to keep it a secret. Sam realizes that Charlie has no other friends, so she and Patrick include Charlie in their group. On the way home, the three heard an unknown song on the radio. Sam instructs Patrick to drive through a tunnel, so she can stand up in the back of a pickup truck while the music explodes. Sam needs to improve her SAT scores for a better chance of being accepted into Pennsylvania State University, so Charlie offers to tutor her, helping to improve her score. At Christmas, Sam gives Charlie a vintage typewriter to thank him for his help. The two discuss relationships, and Charlie reveals he has never been kissed. Sam reveals that her first kiss was at the age of 11 by her father's boss. Charlie revealed that his aunt Helen was also sexually assaulted as a child but claimed she 'could turn her life around'. Sam tells Charlie that she wants his first kiss to be from someone who loves him, and kisses him. At a regular performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Charlie was asked to fill in for Sam's boyfriend, Craig, who wasn't there. Their friend Mary Elizabeth was impressed and asked Charlie to dance Sadie Hawkins. The two entered an unsym meet-up relationship. At a party, when Charlie dares to kiss the most beautiful girl in the room, he chooses Sam, bothering both her and Mary Elizabeth. Patrick advised Charlie to stay away from the group for a while; isolation causes him to sink back to depression. He experienced remonation of his aunt Helen, who died in a car accident on his seventh birthday. Brad appeared at school with bruises on his face after being caught by his father having sex with Patrick. Brad claims he jumped and was beaten, and distanced himself from Patrick, calling him a gay man. After Patrick punches him, Brad's friends start hitting Patrick, but Charlie aggressively intervenes, then the blacks get out. After recovering, he found himself with bruised knuckles and Brad's friends were incapable. Sam and Patrick express their gratitude to Charlie, and the three become friends again. Patrick tries to deal with what happened to Brad, and at one point kisses Charlie, but immediately apologizes. Charlie's mental state worsens after the power outage. Sam was admitted to Penn State, and parted ways with on prom night after knowing he cheated on you. The night before she departed, she took Charlie back to his room. They confided in each other kiss, but when Sam touches Charlie's thighs, he experiences a temporary rethrimagining of his aunt Helen, which he comes out as nothing, and they continue to kiss each other. After Sam left university in the morning his emotional state deteriorated and his reencess worsened. He called his sister, blamed himself for Helen's death, and admitted he might want it to happen. His sister realized he was in distress and called the police. Charlie goes out as they storm through the door and arrives in a hospital, where psychiatrist Dr Burton gives Charlie's suppressed memories, revealing that his aunt sexually abused him. The night Charlie is released from the hospital, he is visited by Sam and Patrick. Sam explains how college life is, and that she found The Tunnel Song - Heroes by David Bowie. The trio return to the tunnel, where Charlie kisses Sam again, and he stands up in the back of the truck. Charlie admits that he feels alive and in that moment - We are infinite. [7] After five years with these elements in mind,[7] he had the idea of writing the novel during a difficult period in his life. [8] He went through a nasty breakup of his own,[8] prompting him to ask, Why would good people let themselves be treated so badly? [9] The author tried to answer the question with the question we accepted the love we thought we deserved. This quote refers to the struggle of finding love itself, including one's life and hope for the future, and not just romantic love. [10] The story began when Chbosky was in school, developing from another book he was working on. [7] In that book he wrote this verse, I guess that was just one of the privileges of being a wall flower, which made him realize that somewhere in it ... is the child that I was really trying to find. [7] Chbosky began writing the novel in the summer of 1996 when he was in college,[11] and within ten weeks he had finished the story. [7] He rewritten it into two more manuscripts, ending the edition in the summer of 1998. [11] Charlie is based on Chbosky him. Like the novel Chbosky includes many of his own memories from when he lived in Pittsburgh on the film. [12] Other characters are expressions of people Chbosky knew throughout his life; [13] Chbosky focuses on people's struggles and what they are passionate about, trying to pin the essence of each character. [14] Sam and Patrick's characters are a mixture and celebration some Chboskys have met; Sam is based on the girls who confide in him, and Patrick is all the kids I know who are gay and find their way to their own identity. [12] Shortly after the novel's release, Chbosky began writing the screenplay for it. [15] Chbosky recalled a meeting with his agent saying, My agent said that we would average one call a week, whether it was from producers choosing it or a writer or director wanting to adapt. Even a German film company, I do not know the name of the company, but they want to buy it and turn it into a German film, which I would love to have seen, in an alternative universe kind of way. yes, there are a lot of offers, but I can't let it go. I do not know how to sell something this personal. And especially what the book means for fans - I can't let it go with anyone else. I owe fans a movie worthy of their love for the book. [15] When he finally sat down and began writing the script, he found it harder than the book. The novel took only four months to write while the script took a year. [16] Chbosky would not sell the rights to the film unless the studio also allowed him to film and direct the film. John Malkovich's production company, Mudd Productions, acquired the rights to the film and let Chbosky write and direct the film himself. In January 2011, Summit acquired distribution rights. [17] The following month, Summit sought a buyer for the project in the European Film Market held in unsymed with the Berlin International Film Festival. [18] Casting in May 2010, Logan Lerman and Emma Watson were said to be in talks for the project[19] and confirmed the following year. [20] In April 2011, Mae Whitman signed on to play Mary Elizabeth and Nina Dobrev was chosen to play Candace. Paul Rudd was chosen to play Mr Anderson later that month. [21] On May 9, 2011, Kate Walsh announced that she had been chosen to play Charlie's mother and had begun filming. [22] On May 19, 2011, Ezra Miller starred in the film. [23] Filming was shot in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area from May 9 to June 29, 2011. [24] Filming initially began in Pittsburgh's South Hills, including South Park, Upper St. Clair and Peters Township High School. [26] Footage of the Rocky Horror Picture Show was filmed at the Hollywood Theatre in Dormont[27] after Chbosky learned that the theater was reopening; he has The Rocky Horror Picture Show was there when he was young. [28] The there are also scenes within the City limits of Pittsburgh inside the Fort Pitt Tunnel, the Fort Pitt Bridge on Interstate 376 and on Mount Washington. [31] The soundtrack album was released on September 25, 2012. [33] Chbosky wrote in the album's middle notes, I shared them with friends. And they shared their favorites with me. [38] The film continued to expand on September 28, 2012, with a nationwide release on October 5, 2012. The UK premiere took place on 23 September[39] at the Cambridge Film Festival. The film originally received an R rating for drug and teen alcohol use, and several sexual references. The filmmakers urged and the MPAA changed it to PG-13 for adult thematic material, drug and alcohol use, sexual content including references and a fight - all involving teenagers. [40] Box office reception The Perks of Being a Wallflower received a limited release of four theaters in the United States on September 21, 2012 and collected $228,359 on its limited opening weekend, an average of $57,089 per theater. The film made $17,742,948 in North America and $15,641,179 in other countries, with global revenue was $33,384,127. [42] The critical response to Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller's performance received critical acclaim. On review a compilation site Rotten Tomatoes, the film approval rating is 86% based on 165 reviews, with an average rating of 7.46/10. Critics of the consensus site read: The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a sincere and sincere adaptation underpinn by strong lead performances. [43] On Metacritic, it has an average score of 67 out of 100, based on 36 critics, showing generally favorable reviews. [44] On CinemaScore, audience members gave the film an average A on an A rating from A+ to F. [45] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three and a half stars out of four stars, writing in his review All my previous myself still existed somewhere inside me, and my former youth would love The Perks of Being a Wallflower. [46] The main cast also received positive reviews. Ian Buckwalter of The Atlantic said: The lead trio delivers outstanding performances, starting with Watson, who sheds light on the memory of a decade of playing Hermione in the Harry Potter series with his face as a flirty but unsafe spirit of freedom. Miller also played with his most recent performance, which was as closely wound as the teen psychopath in We Need to Talk About Kevin, to provide a giddy, stealing scene that turns like Patrick. Lerman, best known f [or] series Percy Jackson, shines like Charlie, a role that requires him to be immediately likeable while still holding on to some deep shadows that cannot be fully revealed until the end. [47] John Anderson of Newsday also praised the cast for saying that when Sam, the almost bad girl tries to reincarn herself before college, she (Emma Watson) brings honesty and a lack of cliché to a character who can be a standard student. But equally nice is her co-star: Ezra Miller, who plays gay character Patrick as something messy and unusual; Paul Rudd, as their English teacher, is refreshingly attentive. And Charlie is portrayed by Lerman as quietly observing, longing and subtle in a way that will click with the audience regardless of age. [48] Allison M. Lyzenga of My Film Habit praised the film saying that The Film particularly recognizes that even if high school can be a battle of insecurity and bullying, you can find allies to help you overcome the struggle. It also shows that we all have a brighter future ahead if we let ourselves get there. [49] Some critics had a less favorable response to the film, with the main criticism being that the role of teen issues was idealized and the casting un inspired. Miami Herald critic Connie Ogle noted that the suicide of Charlie's best friend, which took place before the film unfolded, seemed to be obscured too quickly this event motivated Charlie's protagonist in the film. [50] Jack Wilson of The Age writes, the script is transparently tampered with at almost every moment, congratulating the gang on their inappropriateness while soft-pedalling any aspect of drug use, sexuality, obscene behavior- can upset the American mainstream. [51] Richard Corliss of Time magazine criticized the cast in their twenties for playing teenagers, unlike Heathers, where the lead actors are real teenagers. [52] MTV, Us Weekly and Complex named The Perks of Being a Wallflower one of the best films of the year.
