THE NEWSLETTER OF THE SOCIETY OF MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS IN WASHINGTON STATE VOLUME 27 Issue 3 – Fall 2014 www.WashingtonMayflower.org GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Dear Members of the Washington Society, What a long dry summer we have had. Fifty-five of us enjoyed a nice summer picnic at Point Defiance park in Tacoma with Bob O'Neal presenting the history of our American flag. The cool days of fall are returning and it is time to prepare for winter weather. Every three years, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) has its "Congress" in Plymouth, MA, to conduct the GSMD's business. We sent five delegates to cast our votes and hear the committee reports on GSMD happenings. Among the news are that more "Family Associations" are forming, and you are invited to join. The Society House is being repurposed to generate income from event and bedroom rentals, since it lacks the necessary museum climate controls. Antiques not relevant to the Mayflower passengers will be sold, and Mayflower-relevant (Continued on page 2) Mayflower II and shallop docked at Plymouth Harbor. Bob O’Neal, SAR member, was the guest speaker for the picnic. He presented his Flag History Program, spoke about how the American flag was designed, and displayed many examples of flags that were precursors to the flag that we know today. He also recited the poem by James Whitcomb Riley titled, The Name of Old Glory. Bob also demonstrated how to perfectly cut a five point star and said the first time the five pointed star was used was on the Ver- mont flag used by the Green Mountain Boys. He answered questions about his clothing and took pictures with the members and guests. Governor Hutchins gave Bob a cer- tificate and silver bookmark. Mavis Ratcliff gave the benediction. The summer meeting ended at 1:45 pm. Natalie Cullen [] With humor, Bob O’Neal presented the History of the United States Flag.
