Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of today’s opponents Nuneaton Borough, we do hope you enjoy your short stay with us before having a safe journey home.

A sleeping giant, Ex-Barwell club management, both in the bottom 3 and a local derby what more could you want on a Saturday afternoon for your local football fix!

Like ourselves Nuneaton are looking to hit form after a stuttering start. I’m led to believe they are playing well but performances are not, as we know, delivering points. As clubs we have encountered each other over the years in preseason friendlies on several occasions but only formally locked horns last season, whereupon Nuneaton completed the double over us. Knowing Jimmy Ginnelly as I do, he will get the team delivering for the Nuneaton faithful.

Since our last publication results have been very disappointing. Guy and his management team have been looking to strengthen in certain areas and I’m glad to confirm that “Macca” has now committed for the rest of the season - with a central defender also due to be in imminently to partner him. As Barwell fans we know that the squad that we had finished very strongly last season, so it’s a mystery to us all on why results have not been as expected. We’ve been in the “trenches” before and I’m confident we will dig ourselves out.

Finally for today, as a club/complex things are now gathering steam for our application for our new 3G pitch for next season. We know we are going to be £50-60K short on funding, so we are setting up various fundraising ideas to try to achieve this figure by the end of January 2021. A fundraising page is being set up (please look out for this) early next week along with various donation opportunities for businesses etc.

I have also set myself a challenge of selling 100 squares at £100 each, which I’m now into double figures, please help if you can - this project will be for the benefit of all in our community and certainly for our club. Enjoy today’s game.

In 1889, Nuneaton St. Nicholas was the first team to play senior football within Nuneaton. Five years later, they changed their name to Nuneaton Town, and played until 1937, when the club was disbanded. However, two days later, Nuneaton Borough F.C. was founded. In 2008, the club was liquidated and, due to an FA ruling, was renamed Nuneaton Town, suffering a two division demotion. The club was still known as 'The Boro' by its supporters and in 2018 was rebranded as Nuneaton Borough F.C.

A 2nd half performance to be proud of, with just 10 men, was not enough for Barwell to overcome the difficult start they gave themselves in Peterborough. A goal and a red card for Jayden Cotterill inside 10 minutes gave it the worst possible start for the Canaries and, with 2 more goals in the first half, it was too much for them to overcome.

On the back of the defeat to Alvechurch on Tuesday evening, Guy Hadland's men were looking to bounce back. The first few minutes of the game, even after the first goal had gone in, were positive for the away side. It was Sani who got the goal when he pounced on a cross from Moreman that was let loose by Max Bramley. Moreman had surged down the left hand side and crossed well.

Before Barwell could properly recover from this, Jayden Cotterill was sent off for being the last man and bringing down Mark Jones. There was very little the referee could have done differently apart from reach for the red card. Micah Edwards slotted in to the back 4 alongside Owen Bennett for the rest of the game.

The home side were dominant and brought out a good save from Bramley when he tipped a header over the bar after the ball had been powered in to the pitch to bounce back up and in. Peterborough Sports were looking dangerous every time they had a corner or free kick and could put the ball in to the box. The Barwell defence were far too generous with their marking for these set pieces allowing a number of headers to go close, with most met by the big Mark Jones.

The 2nd goal came from exactly this scenario when Malone headed home a free kick by directing the ball in to the far corner, way beyond the reach of Bramley. Just 3 minutes later the 3rd goal came when Lawlor stroked home a penalty, despite Bramley getting a hand to it. The penalty had been awarded for handball. There was still time in the half for Sports to hit the bar as they continued to pile on the pressure.

Half time: Peterborough Sports 3 Barwell 0

There were 2 changes for the Canaries at half time with Kai Williams and Jahvan Davidson-Miller coming on for Leandro Browne and Massiah McDonald respectively. Those changes and, no doubt, some wise words in the changing room from Hadland helped Barwell to a much better 2nd half performance. The excellent travelling support will have been heartened by the fight that the side showed in this 45 minute period - there was no way that you could tell that one side had only 10 men.

Eliot Putman and Sam Hollis combined well on the left at times and Putman put in some good crosses. James Rowland, on his debut having joined on loan from Shrewsbury Town, had a fine game and never stopped running for the whole game. He also had a shot that forced Elsom in to a good save. Kai Williams caused problems, as ever, and went close with a couple of shots that were not far away from going in.

Sports were looking dangerous on the break and had chances themselves, including hitting the post from a header, but the Barwell defence stood firm and Bramley started to look like he wouldn't be beaten.

In the 87th minute Barwell were awarded a penalty by the Assistant Refer- ee and it was for handball again. Brady Hickey took it but Elsom was again equal to a Barwell effort and pushed the ball away for a corner. 1 minute later and it looked like an own goal had been scored by Sports, with Elsom saving it when many thought it had crossed the line.

In the end though, Sports had done more than enough in the first half to secure the win. As was the case at Tamworth and Nantwich Town, Barwell were much improved in the 2nd half.

The international break very rarely affects Non-League clubs, but Non-League is increasingly influencing the international scene.

Each season we see more players deservedly earn moves into the Football League – and some even go on to reach the absolute peak.

Over the last seven months the football pyramid has become even more divided, with ‘Project Big Picture’ now trying hard to increase the gap, but the importance of lower-league clubs to the product on the pitch has never been more obvious.

Six players in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad have had stints in Non-League and there were five in the side Ryan Giggs picked for Wales when the two teams met last week.

Nick Pope started the friendly fixture at Wembley having begun his career in the Eastern Counties League with Team Bury before progressing to Bury Town in the .

Following his move to Charlton Athletic, Pope went on loan to Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United and Aldershot Town for more crucial experience of first team football.

The back-up England keepers against Wales, Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, are also no strangers to Non-League. Pickford had loan spells at Darlington and Alfreton Town while Henderson played in goal for Stockport County just over four years ago when they were in . He’s also pushing to become Manchester United’s number one.

Centre-back Tyrone Mings impressed in senior football at Yate Town and Chippenham Town in the Southern League before a successful trial at Ipswich Town forged the start of his top-flight career. Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his England debut, and scored, in the 3 -0 win over Wales. A debut goal was nothing new to the Everton striker, as a 17-year-old he bagged on his first appearance for Stalybridge Celtic against Hyde on Boxing Day when Sheffield United sent him out for game time. On New Year’s Day, in the reverse fixture, he scored twice and set up three.

Danny Ings also got in on the act at Wembley, scoring his first goal for his country via a bicycle kick. Ten years ago, he was netting in Non-League at Dorchester Town on loan from Bournemouth.

Many others in the England squad either started or showed their talents in the lower reaches of the Football League before stepping up into the Premier League spotlight.

Non-League football and its clubs play a vital role in developing players just as much as the top-flight academies – every player has a different path and their roots should not be forgotten.
