CMI Summer Schools 2007 Homogeneous flows, moduli spaces, and arithmetic De Giorgi Center, Pisa 2006 Arithmetic Geometry The Clay Mathematics Institute has Mathematisches Institut, conducted a program of research summer schools Georg-August-Universität, Göttingen since 2000. Designed for graduate students and PhDs within five years of their degree, the aim of 2005 Ricci Flow, 3-manifolds, and Geometry the summer schools is to furnish a new generation MSRI, Berkeley of mathematicians with the knowledge and tools needed to work successfully in an active research CMI summer schools 2004 area. Three introductory courses, each three weeks Floer Homology, Gauge Theory, and in duration, make up the core of a typical summer Low-dimensional Topology school. These are followed by one week of more Rényi Institute, Budapest advanced minicourses and individual talks. Size is limited to roughly 100 participants in order to 2003 Harmonic Analysis, Trace Formula, promote interaction and contact. Venues change and Shimura Varieties from year to year, and have ranged from Cambridge, Fields Institute, Toronto Massachusetts to Pisa, Italy. The lectures from each school are published in the CMI–AMS proceedings 2002 Geometry and String Theory series, usually within two years’ time. We focus our attention on the case of 2-manifolds X and make a journey through selected topics of algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, mathematical physics, theoretical mechanics etc. where these objects play an important role, demonstrating along the way the fundamental unity of diverse fields of physics and mathematics. 1 Introduction In recent years we have all witnessed a remarkable and extremely stimulating exchange of deep and sophisticated ideas between Geometry and Physics and in particular between quantum physics and topology. The student or a young scientist in one of these fields is often urged to master elements of the other field as quickly as possible, and to develop basic skills and intuition necessary for understanding the contemporary research in both disciplines. The topology and geometry of manifolds plays a central role in mathematics and likewise in physics. The understanding of duality phenomena for manifolds, mastering the calculus of characteristic classes, as well as understanding the role of fundamental invariants like the signature or Euler characteristic are just examples of what is on the beginning of the growing list of prerequisites for a student in these areas. arXiv:math/0408417v1 [math.AT] 30 Aug 2004 A graduate student of mathematics alone is often in position to take many spe- cialized courses covering different aspects of manifold theory and related areas before an unified picture emerges and she or he reaches the necessary level of maturity. -

Introduction This is the first of a series of three articles which provide proofs of results an- nounced in [9]. Let X be a Fano manifold of complex dimension n.Letλ>0bean integer and D be a smooth divisor in the linear system |−λKX |.Forβ ∈ (0, 1) there is now a well-established notion of a K¨ahler-Einstein metric with a cone singularity of cone angle 2πβ along D. (It is often called an “edge-cone” singularity). For brevity, we will just say that ω has cone angle 2πβ along D. The Ricci curvature of such a metric ω is (1−λ(1−β))ω. Our primary concern is the case of positive Ricci −1 curvature, so we suppose throughout most of the article that β ≥ β0 > 1 − λ . However our arguments also apply to the case of non-positive Ricci curvature: see Remark 3.10. Theorem 1.1. If ω is a K¨ahler-Einstein metric with cone angle 2πβ along D with β ≥ β0,then(X, ω) is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of a sequence of smooth K¨ahler metrics with positive Ricci curvature and with diameter bounded by a fixed number depending only on β0,λ. This suffices for most of our applications but we also prove a sharper statement. -

Information and Announcements Mathematics Prizes Awarded at ICM 2014 The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is held once in four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The ICM is the largest, and the most prestigious, meeting of the mathematics community. During the ICM, the Fields Medal, the Nevanlinna Prize, the Gauss Prize, the Chern Medal and the Leelavati Prize are awarded. The Fields Medals are awarded to mathematicians under the age of 40 to recognize existing outstanding mathematical work and for the promise of future achievement. A maximum of four Fields Medals are awarded during an ICM. The Nevanlinna Prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to mathematical aspects of information sciences; this awardee is also under the age of 40. The Gauss Prize is given for mathematical research which has made a big impact outside mathematics – in industry or technology, etc. The Chern Medal is awarded to a person whose mathematical accomplishments deserve the highest level of recognition from the mathematical community. The Leelavati Prize is sponsored by Infosys and is a recognition of an individual’s extraordinary achievements in popularizing among the public at large, mathematics, as an intellectual pursuit which plays a crucial role in everyday life. The 27th ICM was held in Seoul, South Korea during August 13–21, 2014. Fields Medals The following four mathematicians were awarded the Fields Medal in 2014. 1. Artur Avila, “for his profound contributions to dynamical systems theory, which have changed the face of the field, using the powerful idea of renormalization as a unifying principle”. Work of Artur Avila (born 29th June 1979): Artur Avila’s outstanding work on dynamical systems, and analysis has made him a leader in the field. -

Discurso de investidura como Doctor “Honoris Causa” del Excmo. Sr. Simon Kirwan Donaldson 20 de enero de 2017 Your Excellency Rector Andradas, Ladies and Gentlemen: It is great honour for me to receive the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from Complutense University and I thank the University most sincerely for this and for the splendid ceremony that we are enjoying today. This University is an ancient institution and it is wonderful privilege to feel linked, through this honorary degree, to a long line of scholars reaching back seven and a half centuries. I would like to mention four names, all from comparatively recent times. First, Eduardo Caballe, a mathematician born in 1847 who was awarded a doctorate of Science by Complutense in 1873. Later, he was a professor in the University and, through his work and his students, had a profound influence in the development of mathematics in Spain, and worldwide. Second, a name that is familiar to all of us: Albert Einstein, who was awarded a doctorate Honoris Causa in 1923. Last, two great mathematicians from our era: Vladimir Arnold (Doctor Honoris Causa 1994) and Jean- Pierre Serre (2006). These are giants of the generation before my own from whom, at whose feet---metaphorically—I have learnt. Besides the huge honour of joining such a group, it is interesting to trace one grand theme running the work of all these four people named. The theme I have in mind is the interplay between notions of Geometry, Algebra and Space. Of course Geometry begins with the exploration of the space we live in—the space of everyday experience. -

Spiking Neurons and the First Passage Problem

We derive a model of a neuron’s interspike interval probability density through analysis of the first passage problem. The fit of our expression to retinal ganglion cell laboratory data extracts three physiologically rele- vant parameters, with which our model yields input-output features that conform to laboratory results. Preliminary analysis suggests that under common circumstances, local circuitry readjusts these parameters with changes in firing rate and so endeavors to faithfully replicate an input signal. Further results suggest that the so-called principle of sloppy work- manship also plays a role in evolution’s choice of these parameters. 1 Introduction The pattern of electrical discharge event times, recorded from a neuron by a microelectrode in a vertebrate’s central nevous system, largely depends on three macroscale parameters: local synaptic input current s, in response to signals from other neurons, the transmembrane ohmic rate constant γ , proportional to transmembrane conductance, and the intracellular level of stochastic voltage noise, which may be expressed as a diffusion coefficient. Here we develop an expression for a neuron’s interspike-interval proba- bility density distribution in terms of these three variables. Our procedure assigns to the recorded neuron a simplified dynamical model, whose input- output dynamics, in some studied cases, conforms well with laboratory results. -
