2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The Sandringham Football Club has again achieved another profitable year in spite of the economic Global Financial Crisis. Unfortunately our senior team finished outside the final eight for the second time in as many years.

Our new alignment with the commenced on the 1 st November 2008. Already both Clubs have seen the benefits, both on and off the field. We look forward to a long, successful and prosperous future in our alignment with St Kilda.

The Sandringham Football Club Board along with Andy Lovell and our members and player all worked hard on ensuring our alignment has and will continue to grow. I congratulate the St Kilda Football Club on making the AFL Grand Final and their achievements along the way. Thank you to President Greg Westaway and the St Kilda Football Club Board, Ross Lyon, his coaching staff, players and the administration staff, CEO Michael Nettlefold (Archie Fraser), Anthony Moore and his team in supporting Sandringham Football Club and our alignment.

We have just completed the first year of our five year alignment an alignment that we are keen to extend. The first significant success coming out of our alignment is the selection of Will Johnson to St Kilda in the AFL National draft. Congratulations to Will and we wish him every success in his AFL career.

The Sandringham Football Club is strong and successful because of everyone pulling together for a common cause and this is evident in the dedication and devotion of our support staff, volunteers and community support. Thank you to the individual leaders within each group, Rohan Carson, Rob De Nardis, Bruce Bowles, Lloyd Poad, Margaret Brodie, Deb Hampton, Shirley Cross and numerous other volunteers.

Sponsors are extremely important to the Sandringham Football Club and we thank them for their ongoing support in helping us achieve our goals, and for their support of our charities. Special thanks to Robert and Adel Merola (SEW Eurodrive), Simon Tori (Veolia), Gordon and Michele Duncan (Linenhouse) and to all our sponsors, thank you for your support. All our sponsors are equally valuable to the success of the Sandringham Football Club.

I wish to thank the Rampaging Zebras Coterie members and their families for their contribution to the on and off field success of the Club throughout the year. To their President David Marshall I thank you for all your support. I look forward to working with David and his group in 2010.

I am grateful for the support of John Mennie our General Manager, Luke O’Brien and John Kempf as well as all members of the Sandringham Football Club Board. This has been a most difficult year off the field for the Sandringham Football Club, possibly the most difficult in the Club’s history and I again thank John Mennie for his support of the Sandringham Football Club above and beyond the call of duty. I doubt without John’s commitment the Sandringham Football Club would have achieved the off field success and the positive position the Club is in today, enabling us to moving forward in the future.

3 To Andy Lovell, Jeremy Barnard, Grant Holman, Paul Hopgood, Paul Stevens and their support staff, thank you for your contribution in 2009. I know Andy is exceptionally keen and is working on success for the Sandringham Football Club. He has a new coaching structure and is working hard to deliver what we all expect, development of our players and success.

I would like to acknowledge Doug Gardner for his support of Sandringham Football Club and the players throughout the year. We welcome your ongoing financial and hands on support of the Club.

I would like to acknowledge, Nicholas Sautner as our games and goals record holder and on winning another Frosty Miller Medal. I wish all players that have retired or are moving on, all the best in their future endeavours.

Our new ground lighting has been completed and will enable our players to take full advantage from now on with improved lighting for training. The rebuilding of our Social Club has already commenced and will be completed by the end of February 2010. I wish to thank John Mennie, Steve O’Sullivan and Dennis Galimberti along with many others for their hard work and commitment in getting these projects completed or to where they are today.

The integration of the Sandringham Dragons into the Sandringham Football Club as one Club is continuing. We will continue to work with the AFL and AFL Victoria in progressing this in 2010 and beyond. Wayne Oswald has recently moved on from the Sandringham Dragons and we welcome his new replacement Ryan O’Connor and look forward to working with him and his team in the future.

In 2010 the Sandringham Football Club will celebrate and acknowledge our 80 year history, we need all our current and past people involved with the Club over the journey to get behind the Club in our celebrations.

I would also like to personally thank Wal and Joy Williams for completing the project we gave them earlier in the year which will enable us to acknowledge every player that has played a senior game for the Sandringham Football Club by number.

Finally, we need every Sandringham Football Club member, player, past player, volunteer, and supporter to get involved and support our alignment both on and off the field, ensuring not only our financial success but also success on the field by firstly making the finals and then building on that success.

Gerard Ryan President

4 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

For the second year in a row the seniors failed to make the finals, a position we haven’t been in since 1990-1991. Our inability to win close games contributed to our demise. Over the past two years we have lost a number of great players and haven’t succeeded in replacing them, and it has further proven, that if our VFL list isn’t strong then success will be hard to come by. Andy Lovell and our other coaches were dedicated and passionate in their endeavours to get the team performing more consistently. Congratulations to Paul Stevens and our reserves team on making the grand final, a mighty effort.

After being informed by the Melbourne FC that they would not be renewing their alignment agreement and would be moving down to Casey, the Club acted quickly in approaching the St Kilda FC with the intention of forming a partnership. Shortly after the approach, the Club’s agreed to a five year alignment, ensuring the viability of the SFC into the future.

St Kilda, in the first year of our alignment have done their utmost to support the SFC both on and off the field and I thank them for their cooperation.

Off the field there has been a lot of positive activity. The Club has been able to access funding from AFL Victoria, the State Government and the Bayside City Council to carry out a refurbishment of the Social Club and upgrade our training lights. Further money has been raised through the generosity of our members and sponsors who have donated money through the Australian Sports Foundation.

The Club has again recorded a reasonable profit. It was pleasing that sponsorship was up given the economic crisis the world was experiencing, but unfortunately some other areas including fundraising and the Social Club were down for varying reasons.

The Rampaging Zebra’s Coterie again played a significant role in the Club’s fundraising endeavours, the Friday Business lunches with the support of John Fowler were very well attended and raised a lot of money. The Coterie has played a very important part in our financial success and I am very grateful for their support.

SEW Eurodrive and Veolia continued to support us as major sponsors and we are very grateful to have such great companies as partners. We thank them and our other sponsors, including Linen House, Motorola, Asko, Brickwood Holdings, Bendigo Bank, Le Pine Funeral Services and Sportsbet for their support.

I thank Gerry and the committee for their leadership and support throughout the year. John, Luke and Margaret for their help and cooperation in the office, Dave Burgin, Peter and Jenni Rowe, Don McKellar Bruce Bowles, Lloyd Poad, Graeme Clarke, Grahame Steele, Roly, Andrew Burton, Geoff Combe, John Lysaght, Mark Brodie, Rob De Nardis, Rohan Carson, Wal and Joy Williams and all the training and support staff for their valued assistance. The dedicated support of Shirley Cross, Deb Hampton, Peter Price and Graeme Winn is much appreciated. A special thank you to them all and everybody else that contributed throughout the year.

John Mennie General Manager 5 TREASURER’S REPORT

Although our profit for the year is down on last years result, the profit of $28,278.00 is a great result considering the current financial climate. Funds from sponsorship are up on last year offsetting the decline in funds from fundraising activities. The Zebra Circle raffle was obviously affected by the fact that we could no longer pay cash prizes, the Athletics Gift was down due to a drop in sponsorship, and coterie business lunches were down as two less business lunches were held.

The Coterie Group continues to give great support to fundraising with its membership and business lunches bringing in $52,312.00 overall.

The Social Club maintained its popularity for functions, although the anticipated commencement of the new development resulted in function requests being turned down for early in the year, however the efforts of Dave Burgin and Peter and Jenni Rowe, ensured a profit of $54,734.00.

Gate receipts are down on last year due to one less game and the fact that losing more home games than usual did not help attendances during the year. Profit from the two kiosks was also down for the same reasons.

On the expenditure side, salaries for all staff and players increased by a total of $15,500.00. Administration salaries were up $20,358.00 partly due to the Admin. Manager position being filled for the whole year compared to only nine months the previous year and a general increase in Salaries. However player payments were down $19,570.00 due to senior players who had left or retired not being replaced and injuries suffered by our new recruits. As reported last year it is becoming necessary to spend more on the football department and its associate staff members in strength and fitness, the extra staff costs contributed to an increase of $14,712.00.

As with last year all players were paid in full by the 30th September and all coaches, trainers, doctors and physios were paid by the 31st October.

Not shown as income but reported in the Balance Sheet, the renovations donation fund has at the 31 st October an amount $50,650.00, which has given the amount of $203,000.00 required to be funded by the football club a positive start. Hopefully by the time payment of our portion of the cost is required the generosity of our members will have swelled the donation fund to a level that will allow the club to have the necessary upgrade to the Social Club kitchen completed.

11 SENIOR COACH’S REPORT

Ultimately, 2009 was a disappointing year in terms of games won and lost and to finish 10 th with 7 wins and 11 losses was unfamiliar territory for the Sandringham Football Club.

On the back of a really solid pre season program which included the implementation of 2 running coaches and Stealth Development, who facilitated the pre season training camp, the season began really strongly with 2 very good wins against Casey and Frankston in the opening 2 rounds. What was to follow was a 3 week block where we lost to eventual premiers North Ballarat at home by 2 goals then went down to Williamstown away and Grand Finalists Northern Bullants at home.

The group got back on track with a 5 goal win away at Werribee but the most disappointing result for the season was the home loss to Geelong which was to have repercussions later in the season, putting pressure on us to win 4 of our last 5 to play finals.

The remainder of the season, the team played a competitive brand of football but critically, lacked consistency at times in games which cost us dearly. Importantly, with a good balance of experienced senior players and the excitement of our group of younger players at both Sandringham and our aligned partner St Kilda the team orchestrated some pleasing results against Williamstown, Bendigo and Coburg.

Congratulations must go to the Reserves team who overcame early season inconsistency to fight their way into the Grand Final against competition leaders Box Hill. While they eventually fell short, succumbing in the last 10 minutes of the match, their fighting spirit and determination was a pleasure to see. Well done to all those boys!

To all of the players, thank you for the sacrifices and effort you have invested. To those who have decided to move on seeking other challenges, I wish you well for the remainder of your football careers.

We have a fantastic group of support staff (too many to name individually!) who without each and every one of you this great club would not survive. Thank you all very much for giving up your precious time for the good of the footy club. Special mention has to go to Roly and Fred for the Soup Kitchen, please keep it coming for many more years to come!

To our statisticians who do a very valuable job, I thank you all very much and I hope that the good work can continue. To the 2 Grahame / Graeme’s, Steele and Clarke, who were often frustrated but never beaten, you efforts were appreciated and valued very highly.

To our Medical Staff, I thought the collaborative effort was very effective in improving our medical process, I’m looking forward to working closely with Rob De Nardis and his team moving forward.

12 To my fellow coaches, Jeremy Barnard, Grant Holman and Paul Hopgood, your support and work ethic is vital and I thank you for your contribution during season 2009.

Paul Stevens and Ian Buszard who due to increased work commitments cannot continue in their roles in 2010, thank you for your friendship, knowledge and support.

Others who are moving on after years of loyal service are, Rohan Carson, who has taken a job with the Melbourne Football Club and takes with him our best wishes and thanks for many years of outstanding service. As is Graeme Clarke who sacrificed many hours and litres of petrol to provide for the club he loves, I will also miss our little chats!

To our strength and conditioning staff, who I believe are the best in the business, I thank you for your year and I hope we can continue to improve to maintain our status as the best in the VFL. To our runner Jim Whittla, thanks for 2009 and it is great to have you back again in 2010.

Bruce Bowles continues to ensure that the ‘attention to detail’ in all logistical matters relating to football is achieved. A huge thanks for your loyalty and hard work. To Lloyd Poad, thank you for coming back in 2009 and I hope we can have you around the club for many more years to come. The boys love having you around and your support and help means a lot to myself and the club.

A genuine positive from 2009 has been the strength of our 1 st year alignment with the St Kilda Football Club. The fact that 17 players attended the SFC is testament to the bond that has already formed and will continue to grow and strengthen in the years to come.

In particular, I thank Danny Sexton for his help and support as well as Greg Hutchison and Ross Lyon who have assisted and supported me extensively in my role at St Kilda. I hope in 2010 we can both go that one step further!

To our major sponsor, SEW Eurodrive, as well as Veolia Environmental Services, Linen House, Le Pine Funerals and our group of highly valued sponsors, your continued support of our club is fundamental to it achieving success once again.

To the club’s members, stay on board and keep the faith. Everyone within the organisation is working hard to achieve success.

Finally to Gerry Ryan, John Mennie, John Kempf, Luke O’Brien and the entire Board of Directors, your support, belief and trust is genuinely valued and appreciated. I look forward to repaying that faith and I am already looking forward to getting back and working towards success in 2010!

Andy Lovell Senior Coach

13 JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Junior Development for 2009 again focused strongly on the local Auskick programs. Eight of the nine Sandringham home games were booked by local Auskick clubs, with many clubs asking if they could participate again later in the season.

Auskick clubs to participate in the program this year included Hampton, East Brighton, Sandringham East, Beaumaris, Elsternwick, Ormond, Bentleigh, Cheltenham and Valkstone. The positive response to the games is a very promising result for the future of our club. With each game bringing approximately 15-25 football playing kids through the gate with around 10-12 parents attending, our club and brand is receiving a greater level of exposure.

A strong feature of Junior Development in 2009 was the push for local clubs to come down and have a football clinic hosted by the Sandringham players. Bruce Bowles was instrumental in promoting this within the local community and a massive thank you must go to the players in particular Nick Sautner and Maddison Hardiman who regularly gave up their time to take the youngsters through their paces.

Junior Development continues to grow and it is highlighted by the amount of young kids and their families that regularly attend Sandringham games. This will continue to grow as we wheel out more extensive programs and better initiatives for 2010.

Thank you to all the Auskick co-ordinators and parents that dedicate their time to helping organise and support these games. A special thanks also to Shirley Cross and her kiosk staff.

Junior Development is one area that we, as a club must concentrate on in years to come to ensure our survival within the community and ensure that the younger community has a club that they can support long into the future.

Luke O’Brien Junior Development Manager
