A Reading of Simone De Beauvoir's When Things of the Spirit Come Beyond the Independent Woman: A Reading of Simone de Beauvoir’s When Things of the Spirit Come First with The Second Sex Kelly Anne Beck Bachelor of Arts (Griffith), Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) (UQ), Graduate Diploma of Arts (Philosophy) (UQ) A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry Abstract This thesis explores the implications of Simone de Beauvoir’s philosophical and literary representations of women through a close reading of selected chapters from The Second Sex alongside selected stories from When Things of the Spirit Come First. Just as Beauvoir argues that women cannot be represented through discourses of class, history, biology and psychoanalysis, this thesis will show how women cannot be fully represented or understood as complete individuals within the contexts of their social roles either. To this end, the focus of this thesis will be the independent woman, the mother and the daughter. In this thesis, I have paired the short stories ‘Marguerite’ and ‘Anne’ from When Things of the Spirit Come First with the chapters ‘The Independent Woman’, ‘The Mother’ and ‘The Mystic’ from The Second Sex. Linking the stories in When Things of the Spirit Come First with The Second Sex highlights the importance of literary writing to the understanding of Beauvoir’s philosophy. In this thesis I argue that Beauvoir’s literary work should not be seen as subordinate to, or as separate from, her philosophical work. Her representation of women in literary terms in both philosophical and literary texts has ensured that women are recognised and made visible to philosophy as philosophical, political and ethical subjects. I argue that Beauvoir’s philosophy has brought forth the voices of women in everyday situations into dialogue with canonical philosophies and that those voices have subverted the authority of such philosophies. Indeed, Beauvoir has opened the way for ordinary women to enter the language of philosophy, just as her work in The Second Sex opened the way for future feminists to enter and challenge the language of the patriarch. The texts I have chosen and the method of analysis I have used to understand these texts will extend our understanding of the importance of the literary to Beauvoir’s philosophical framework. The implication of this understanding is that Beauvoir’s literary representations of women can be used as a means to think through the multiple, ambiguous domains of oppression experienced by women in the everyday. 2 Declaration by author This thesis is composed of my original work, and contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference has been made in the text. Stephen Hetherington The University of N~\NSouth Wales Many philosophers of feminism believe that Genevieve Lloyd, in her book The Man of Reas~n,~struck a significant blow against traditional analytic epis- tem~logy.~Supposedly, she did this by showing that the concepts of reason and rationality have, in the historical hands of Western philosophy, become genderized-in particular, masculinized. In this paper, I will not comment on whether other areas of philosophy are guilty of that charge; my present aim is simply to defend epistemology in particular against it.4 I will argue, first of all, that Lloyd's discussion in particular-whatever its other merits might be- poses no fundamental threat to epistemology:' Although her reasoning is his- toricist, it fails to establish the historical links it needs to establish; indeed, it unwittingly provides some confirmation of epistemology's enduring impor- tance. But I will also argue, more fundamentally and more generally, that no feminist argument for Lloyd's kind of conclusion could pose any real threat to epistemology: The sort of genderization which Lloyd and others believe that she has uncovered would be most clearly explicable as being a failing as such, only via some standard elements of epistemology-which is to say that what- ever shortcomings, if any, such feminist discussions could ever uncover can easily be absorbed within the scope of standard epistemological explanation. Epistemology's own metaphilosophical potential will thus be seen to confirm its own continuing significance, even in the face of feminist-historicist argu- ments like Lloyd's.

Althusser and ideological criticism of the arts RICHARD ELDRIDGE Louis Althusser's 1970 essay "Ideology and ideological state appar- atuses"1 is arguably the most influential and important document in contemporary critical practice and its theory. In one way this is puzzling, for the essay contains almost nothing that can be recog- nized as an argument. It does not put forward a causal theory of the rise and fall of forms of social life. It offers no deductions, and it contains only a few sketchily described examples of ideologies. The essay is instead filled with oracular pronouncements, couched in a terminology partly invented and partly cobbled together from the Marxist tradition and from Lacan. Yet there it is. Althusser's work receives more extended discussion — thirty-five consecutive pages, plus numerous occasional references — in Fredric Jameson's 1981 The Political Unconscious,2 perhaps the most important American text in so-called New Historicist criticism, than any of the literary works Jameson considers except Conrad's Lord Jim.

The historical debate found its most heated moment in the seventeenth century between Rene Descartes and Benedict De Spinoza; the rst advocating for the superiority of the mind over the body, and the latter with his characteristic Monist view framing the mind and body as one same substance. While it seemed that Descartes had won the debate, developments in neuroscience have been weighing towards the spinozistic conception. However, the feminine perspective had been largely ignored until Simone de Beauvoir published her seminal book in 1949. Feminists since then have had a conicting relationship with the earlier debates, yet Spinoza’s work, with its materialist framework, seems to be holding steady ground within the contemporary feminist movement. For instance, Spinoza’s ontology is used as framework to discuss feminism (anarcha-feminism) in the text by Chiara Bottici, “Bodies in Plural: Towards an anarcha-feminist manifesto.” But this reliance on the dead white man as a means to parse through feminist issues poses some interesting questions, chief among them: can a white male from the seventeenth century provide any openings to thinking about the very contemporary problematics of women’s issues in the twentyrst century? In The Second Sex De Beauvoir writes explicitly about the female body, about the physical cycles it undergoes: menstruation, pain, blood.

    420 Bargu Chapter 22 Machiavelli after Althusser Banu Bargu At the end of Machiavelli and Us, Louis Althusser salutes Machiavelli as ‘the greatest materialist philosopher in history’.1 Machiavelli, he posits, is the ‘equal of Spinoza, who declared him “acutissimus”, most acute’.2 But he quickly adds: ‘Spinoza considered him acutissimus in politics. He would appear not to have suspected that Machiavelli was also most incisive in materialist philosophy’.3 Formulated thus, what appears as an assertion of the parity of importance of both figures turns out to affirm Machiavelli’s indisputable, though unrecog- nised place in the history of philosophy. In positing Machiavelli on par with Spinoza, Althusser redefines him as a materialist philosopher. Further, by evok- ing the inadequacy of Spinoza’s appreciation of Machiavelli (limited, as it was, only to politics), Althusser also insinuates that Machiavelli is not only ‘most incisive in materialist philosophy’, but, in effect, the ‘most incisive’ materialist philosopher, whose importance went unsuspected or unrecognised or, at least, not fully recognised, by the greatest minds that came after him. This is a claim not to be taken lightly, if only because the same Althusser, rejecting the charge of structuralism, confesses to being ‘guilty of an equally powerful and compromising passion’ – that of being Spinozist.4 Explaining this passion, Althusser clarifies: ‘we made a detour via Spinoza in order to im- prove our understanding of Marx’s philosophy. Listen to how Beauvoir describes early response to the book in her 1963 autobiography, Force of Circumstance: “Unsatisfied, frigid, priapic, nymphomaniac, lesbian, a hundred times aborted, I was everything, even an unmarried mother. People offered to cure me of my frigidity or to temper my labial appetites; I was promised revelations, in the coarsest terms but in the name of the true, the good and the beautiful, in the name of health and even of poetry, all unworthily trampled underfoot by me” (FC, 197). Beauvoir goes on for several pages documenting violent and aggressive reactions to her book. In an opposing stance, also emotional and deeply ambivalent, Beauvoir was cast as the “mother” of feminism, a label she disavowed in a 1974 interview remarking that “mother-daughter relations are generally catastrophic” (Schwarzer, 94) and “people don’t tend to listen to what their mothers are telling them” (Patterson, 92). Her text has also been called “the feminist bible” even though Beauvoir herself was an atheist (Thurman, xii). Over half a decade later, the text still solicits powerful reactions. Reviewing the new 2010 translation in the New York Times, Francine du Plessix Gray says: “Beauvoir’s truly paranoid hostility toward the 2 institutions of marriage and motherhood — another characteristic of early feminism — is so extreme as to be occasionally hilarious.” She goes on to say that “pessimism runs through the text like a poisonous river” while reassuring us that Beauvoir did not hate men (Plessix-Gray, 2010).

While a few early chapters are historically organized, my goal in the historical chapters is to trace a developmental progression of thought that introduces basic philosophical methods and frames issues that remain relevant today. Later chapters are topically organized. These include philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, areas where philosophy has shown dramatic recent progress. This text concludes with four chapters on ethics, broadly construed. I cover traditional theories of right action in the third of these. Students are first invited first to think about what is good for themselves and their relationships in a chapter of love and happiness. Next a few meta-ethical issues are considered; namely, whether they are moral truths and if so what makes them so.

Eckel Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy The University of Toledo May 2014 Taking Gilles Deleuze to be a philosopher who is most concerned with articulating a ‘philosophy of difference’, Deleuze’s thought represents a fundamental shift in the history of philosophy, a shift which asserts ontological difference as independent of any prior ontological identity, even going as far as suggesting that identity is only possible when grounded by difference. Deleuze reconstructs a ‘minor’ history of philosophy, mobilizing thinkers from Spinoza and Nietzsche to Duns Scotus and Bergson, in his attempt to assert that philosophy has always been, underneath its canonical manifestations, a project concerned with ontology, and that ontological difference deserves the kind of philosophical attention, and privilege, which ontological identity has been given since Aristotle.
