Te Puru was asked by the Parks, Sport and Recre- ation Department of Auckland Council to survey chil- dren and young people who use Te Puru Community Centre’s facilities. The aim was to gather information and feedback that could drive new activities and initiatives at Te Puru. The survey included questions about what the chil- dren do at Te Puru, what other sports and activities they would like to do there, their favourite sports, and feedback about the holiday programmes. A snapshot of some of the results showed: • Gymnastics, football and netball are very popular • Lots of children would like to play hockey • Trampolining, chess and Taekwon-do were also on the ‘would like to do’ list • Children preferred to do their sport socially rather than competitively • Holiday programmes should be a mix of activities and sport Bikes in Schools donated 10 cycle helmets to give away as prizes to children who took part in the survey. Maraetai dance instructor Korrin Laker was the organisational drive behind the dance class opportunity of a lifetime recently. Korrin’s dance school, The Dance Corner, with the help of Live Nation, organised a once-in-a-lifetime workshop with four of Pink’s back-up dancers while Pink was in Auckland during her recent ‘Beautiful Trauma’ tour. Korrin says she was “so excited” when the four dancers agreed to teach a one hour class each. Madeline Spang (Contemporary) Jer- emy Hudson (Jazz) Reina Hidalgo (Hip Hop) and Khasan Brailsford (Jazz Funk) have an impressive combined CV, having danced for celebrities including Rhianna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Jen- nifer Lopez as well as featuring in Nike advertisements, and in blockbuster movies such as The Greatest Showman. Sixty intermediate and advanced dancers from all around Auckland attended the workshops organised by Korrin. Classes were held at St Cuthberts college, which Korrin says was a fantastic venue able to cater for the large class sizes. Milla Doeg is one of The Dance Corner’s local students who attended the Pink dance workshop. “It was such an incredible experience and I loved every minute of it,” says Milla. “The dancers were all so amazing! It was a chance for me to step outside of my comfort zone and I really enjoyed it. I continue to feel inspired and I can’t wait to see where my dancing will take me in the future.” Fellow student Sara Brewer agrees the workshop was an amazing opportunity. “This workshop inspired, motivated and encouraged me in many different ways. If the opportunity was given, I would definitely do it all over again!” Local mum Megan Norton says the workshop left a lifetime impression on her daughter, Milar Norton. “To see them perform after being at the workshop was just brilliant! It’s has inspired Milars pas- sion for dance even more.
